Is a drop of 2000 calories a day safe?

First of I'm a really big guy. I'm 6'1 and 386 pounds. (yup you read right that was a 3). Short story 3 back surgeries not moving much for two years and still ate the old way. Anyway that puts my BMR at some place close to 3800 calories to maintain my weight. when I eat sweets or have cokes it's easy to drive my calories that high. But now since I have cut all that out it takes everything I have just to be able to eat 1400-2000 calories. So back to the question.....Is a drop of 2000 calories a day safe as long as I'm still taking in 1800 or so calories?

No special diet really just cut out the sugar which was a large part of my diet.
The things I'm eating just don't seem to have many calories in them. I'm not starving I just stay busy online when I get a munching craving. most times I'm not really hungry, I think it's more from boredom. Now That I started back at the gym I'm hungry after a cardio workout but I don't want to have a big meal and then go to bed.

2k is too much of a drop. The normal recommendation seems to be 10-20% of your maintence, or 500 cals. Since your pretty big, you can probobly drop more than 500 cals for a while.

With a little moderate exercise I made you BMR about 4,400 for maintenance. I'm assuming you're doing at least a little bit of exercise with your diet so why not try cutting back to between 3,000 - 3,500 calories a day and see where that takes you. I only weigh 215lbs (I'm 6'2") and I take in between 3,500 - 4,000 a day and have quite low body fat so I'm sure you'll lose weight with 3,000 a day.

Having said that, you have a BMI of 50 so it's probably best you talk to a doctor first before taking up any exercise and maybe a nutritionist to advise you about your diet. With someone at your weight I think it would be best to have a proffesional give you a face-to-face consultation

For a person as large as yourself, you should consult a doctor for advice. Certainly cutting your calories by nearly 2000 seems excessive, however, in my view if you start eating like a healthy person of your height, you should be fine.

As for anyone who wants to lose weight, you should really exercise as well as having a good solid diet plan. Just saying to yourself, "I'm going to eat things I really don't like and I'm going to do this exercise that's really uncomfortable, but I know it's good for me," is a sure sign way of failing later on down the road. You need to find stuff you like to eat, and you need to do things you like to do.

You have a very long road ahead of you and I really hope you can make it. Don't give up. Goodluck.

Do you mean cut 2000 from your maintenance amount or cut 2000 from the old amount you used to eat when you had lots of cokes and sweets etc?

Thanks guys.... My family pitched in and got me a gym membership since I just got my Associates and just haven't been picked up by anyone yet. Anyway my back has healed as much as it's going to from the back surgeries so it's a good time to go back. I talked to my doctor and she doesn't want on a crash diet and make sure I get at least 2000 calories a day. I'm working up to that part.. She told me on the heart rate shoot for 130-140. I have a good heart but with my size she doesn't want my heart to race out of control.
Last night I went to the gym and did a few 15 min sessions on the elliptical and one four min session on the elliptical or as I like to call it the machine from hell lol. That machine got my heart rate really up lol. Then I did some light weights in the 50 pound range. I didn't hit everything I just worked on my arms, chest, shoulders. I don't have a precise plan since I cant afford a personal trainer. The workout felt good and even after the shower the sweat was still pouring out lol.....

I was looking at 2000 in reduction at what I used to take in. so I'm taking in from 1300-2000 a day. It's all depending on if I'm sitting around or if I went to the gym and did something. My doctor gives me good advice but it's all based on someone that needs to lose 20-30 pounds. Her biggest concern is heart rate. being so large it doesn't take anytime all all in a free range on a machine to really drive it up. So last night when I went, I set the machine for 140 and then the resistance would lighten up.

I get bored really easily so I did 15 Min's on the recumbent then jumped on the treadmill for 15 then went on the elliptical for every bit of 4 Min's. After that I went to the weight machines for about 20 Min's and my heart rate stayed pumped for a good solid hour. I tell you I slept like a baby lol. I didn't get the soreness I was expecting.

I just have no energy normally so I'm thinking of some kind of multivitamin because after the 1/2 hour or so of cardio I was spent. If anyone reading this has an idea for a good multivitamin just please let me know. I just hope in taking them, it doesn't drive my appetite through the roof......

Cool that you're doing that. You should really try to stick with one machine though and try to get more out of that. For the treadmill, try running, walking, and running / walking sideways. You can also use weights to "throw" punches in the air to get more out of it. Try doing this while adjusting the vertical to get the most.

For elliptical, try going with a program on it. Usually a "hill" program will do as it a very good workout. I usally go with the default and hold it at max resistence and ramp at max without variations.

Bike is extremely fun too. You can try riding really fast, then standing up riding every few minutes. This will give you a very good workout.

Don't be tricked by what those multivitamins tell you. They do not give you any energy. The only way it gives you energy is if you're eating right, and you're taking something that might require you to have a multivitimin. Eat plenty of veggies and fruits to get the most out of your energy. Also, be sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night, and you'll wake up feeling fresh and full of energy. Stay away from the diet cokes and coffee, and I think you'll do great.

Thanks for the good advice.... running is out thats just too much weight coming down on my knees though the treadmill will cushion that some. I have been going from machine to machine just because I get bored easily. The elliptical does the best But I get sore really quickly. I'm just using muscles I haven't used before, if ever at all. Being a big guy it only takes about a min and my heart rate is at what I set it at. I normally set it at 140 which gives me a good workout and gets the sweat pumping out and my heart isn't trying to beat through my chest. When I go from machine to machine I do it really quickly so my heart rate doesn't have time to drop in between. I just have to really develop my endurance so I can just stay on longer. On the sleeping I use to sleep about 10 11 hours a day but since I have started going to the gym I only need about 7-8. It's odd; you would think working out would make you sleep more......
