This oughta' stir up some conversation.
I don't think it's worth the effort, personally. And my limited understanding of biology leads me to believe that they're not actually fortifying their soft tissues, protecting them from blows - they're just physically/mentally desensitising themselves and gradually (or quickly) destroying things that don't grow back.
Although, some people do amazing things with focused energy - like bend pieces of rebar against their throats, or smash stacks of bricks with their foreheads. What do you think? Legitimate defense or quack "technique?"
