intuitive eating

Anybody losing weight this way?

I'm getting fed up with fitday and counting calories - so I've been eating just very carefully, listening to my belly's signals for protein, grains, vegetables, fruits, water. This is something I can do for the rest of my life. I don't know about doing fitday every day for the rest of my life.

My calories for the past two days are coming in less than when I "count".

What's up with that?

I was focussing on the number but this way I'm focussing on how I feel.

But less is not always good. When I wasn't counting, I was getting less than 1000 calories/day which for me = bad! So, just make sure to eat enough!

I'm way too obsessive to not know how many calories i've got in a day... though 9 months into this... I pretty much know now, how many calories are in a meal I've cooked are.. I won't have to use a food diary for the rest of my life - right now it's a security blanket for me -and gives me something to go back and look at to see where i might have slipped up.

and mz crazed is right - you do want to make sure you are getting enough in - though listening to your body is an excellent way to go...

Yes you need to know how much you are getting and you need to make sure oyu are gettin enough or you wont loose weihgt at least that is the thing in mycase - when I was eating abt 1200 cals a day working my physical job and exercising like crazy I wasnt loosing anyhting at a stand still for weeks once I highered my cals I started droppin

It doesnt take long for you to know how many cals are in what and such - like I dont even have to tally up my cals or count them anymore as I pretty much know what is what and when I have been good or bad...really you need to find what works for you - but I also give into my cravings - I dont deny myself anythign I want - well within reason ya know - or I quite often share with the kids or just have a bite or two of whatever they are indulging in :):):) You just gotta find what works for you !!!

I think the biggest problem here is that fitday just sucks, so slow blegh.

I have a really useful excel document which I use, you just input everything you eat once and once you've done so you can fill it out super fast, under 5 minutes :)

It calculates your protein, carbs, fat percentages perfectly giving you all the info you need :)

I might translate it to english some day if I get a lot of response

I tried fitday for about two weeks and I also got fed up with it. It takes forever to input stuff and I found myself trying to eat the same things all the time so that it would be easier to track and doing the same exercise for the same reason. I finally started using an excel sheet to track my progress and I find it much easier to have it all on one sheet easy to see and track.

I love the idea of intuitive eating...I hope a year from now to have trained myself to be able to do it. But right now, even after more than a year of monitoring my food, I don't feel comfortable just "listening to my body" and trusting myself to make really good choices based on what I think it's saying.

I'm glad I asked

Thank you for your opinions.

I have decided to stay real about calories and have made a chart for the month where I will log my weight, BMR + Calories burned from exercise = Daily Calories burned - Calories consumed for DAILY DEFICIT.

I feel a greater sense of control over what I'm doing.

Thanks also to Tomo for posting the ten things he has learned. This helped clarify things for me.

Just remember that those BMR calculators are not dead accurate; they are based on "average" people, whatever that is supposed to mean. We also all have different reactions to changes in our diet and caloric intake, so remember this is just the internet, and your mileage may vary.
One thing you may want to consider is tracking calories on days where you prepare all of your own meals (not basing your food plan around the numbers, just tracking them), and eating intuitively on days where you are going out to eat, or where you don't have control over every aspect of your food.

works

It works for me, but keep in mind that I only eat out once a week. I cook all of my own food including ground turkey, chicken, veggies and salads. I eat very little dairy (Slice of mozzarella for turkey burgers) and I dont buy any fatty foods or sweets. I only use oil for salad dressing (balsamic vinegar and olive oil) All bread including tortillas and pitas are whole wheat, and I dont eat mayonnaise or drink anything but water, and a little garden patch (veg juice). This allows me to eat intuitively without tracking my eating. I do eat whole eggs, and eat some cereal with rice milk, but I also have a pretty good exercise program going. The number one thing I try to fight is eating by habit, and not because Im hungry or my body needs the food. (I try to stay as far away from the kitchen as possible)
