Introduction and plea for advice!

Hi everyone, I'm Marissa :)
Right now, I feel just awful about my appearance. I hate leaving the house because I feel so grossly fat but staying locked up inside all day is just causing me to eat more and more. I've been trying to lose weight for 5 years now and I've either lost weight then gained it all back, or didn't even lose any in the first place. I am truly embarrassed to be this weak. So I'm looking for advice from those with a little more self-discipline than myself (that's everyone probably). How on earth do I lose weight? Which diets have worked for you? How do you have sufficient willpower not to binge day in day out?
Thanks in advance for any help

Additional information: I do quite a lot of exercise, it's the eating part I fail with so I'm looking for advice concerning eating not concerning exercise

Well, not sure if I would say I have any more control than you but something new for me in this get healthy plan for myself is to stay in the present. I listened to this woman discuss this in regards to parenting and really can be applied to parenting, working, eating, etc.

Instead of focussing on tomorrow or my long term goals of eating/changing habits I am trying my damnest to stay focussed on TODAY. What I am eating for breakfast today not tomorrow or even later in the day, just as I sitting down to a meal and what I am going to eat that minute and try and keep it w/in my goals.

Guess what, willpower is a problem for most of us. If we had good willpower we wouldn't be fat in the first place.

You do have to exercise some self control when trying to lose weight, that's for sure, but there are some tricks you can use to help. You need to be aware of your own weaknesses and be smart about the changes you make, if you make too much of a drastic change that you can't manage then you'll revert back to bad behaviour. It's better to make smaller changes which you can stick too rather than large changes that only last a week.

For example I knew if I cut out fizzy drinks completely It wouldn't last long, so I stuck to diet or sugar free fizzy drinks, they're not great for your health but they're a massive saving on calories over the full sugar ones. I knew this was a change I could live with and even today I still only drink diet fanta and pepsi max.

Make as many of these lifestyle changes as possible, ask yourself if the change is something you can live with forever, if all of the changes you make are just temporary then when you finish your diet you're going to put weight back on again, you have to accept that your current diet is bad and it needs to change permanently, otherwise you'll just Yo-yo diet.

Some of the lifestyle changes I made which I intend to stick to forever.
  • Only diet fizzy drinks
  • Not to keep sweets/biscuits in the house
  • Have veg or salad with every meal
  • Eat at least once piece of fruit a day

Hopefully when my diet is done these things will be 2nd nature, I should be able to carry on doing these things forever and maintain my weight, all the temporary changes like cutting out snacks can be introduced back in moderation.
