Introducing myself - newbie

HI everyone!

I've had enough of my weight and I've come here hoping to meet others so that we can support each other towards our weight loss goals.

I'm 30 years old, 5'8 and a bit and weigh 154lbs, that's 70kgs and 172cms. I would like to weigh 132lbs.

3 years ago, I went from 75 kgs to 67kgs using weightwatchers and I've managed to keep it off. Now, I'm not working and I've just watched the weight creep on. I want to stop it now before it gets too out of hand.

I went to the gym everyday for one month (February) and gained 2 kgs. This was doing a mixture of cardio (running on the treadmill) and resistance training. I know I've put on some muscle but still...I should have dropped a little weight surely? I do feel fitter, but I'm actually a little depressed when hopping on the scales after all the hard work and I"m heavier!

I'm thinking my eating is what is in my way. The weight loss I had with WW's was without exercise (only light walking every other day).

That's my story - I'm going to read through the posts and get set-up. If there's anyone out there who wants to write to me, please do, I'd love to hear how you're losing weight.

Have a great day!

Hey. Welcome to the board. I'm sorry about your gain. Maybe you need to look very closely at your diet and see what healthy changes can be made. Also, remember the scale is the end all be all of your fitness journey. Soemtimes it doesn't accurately tell us what is really going on with our body. How about getting a measuring tape and taking some measurements? Then go back every two weeks or so and take new measurements. This can be a very useful tool in determining how well you are really doing. Good Luck!!

HI there, thanks for writing. You are right, I do need to look at my diet, although I feel I am constantly analyzing what Im eating! I will take my measurements tomorrow, I havent done that in years...lets see how it goes. If Im brave enough I will post my measurements too.
By the way, congrats on your weight loss, you are doing fantastic judging by your ticker. Well done.
Thanks for the encouragement!

Calorie intake to lose weight

I had a look online, and to lose 10kgs in 3 months, it says I should be eating a 1300 calorie diet. I want to eat better anyway, but what do y'all think of that - is 1300 calories ok? I'll monitor it with a food diary.

This, combined with exercise every day should get me to my goal of 60kgs. I'm currently 70kgs, 172cms tall.

i usually stick with 1500 as a ballpark figure. You gotta figure if you're at 1500 cal, you can eat 6 meals of 250 cal each which isn't bad

Hello zigzag and welcome! I am new to. To the boards and this whole crazy fitness thing. I would second Landonsbaby that the scale isn't your judge and jury. You and I are the same age. ok, ok I'm 31 but we are close enough. Just remember despite what the scales say if you are eating better and going to the gym, you are improving your health, and by extension, your life.

Hi zigzag and welcome!
There are pleanty of calculators out there (fitday.com and thedailyplate.com) that will tell you what a healthy weight loss intake should be (never usually more than 3lbs/week unless you have >50lbs to loose - generally speaking).
Fitday and TDP will also help you keep track of your food and exercise, so you can speak accurately about how much you're actually taking in (and whether its 500 calories of FAT or 500 calories of Protean/etc).

You might want to start a Diary in the Diary section and start reading threads in the Nutrition and WeightLossByExercise sections as a good place to start.

Good luck and Welcome!

I'm back

Thanks to those who have dropped me a line.

I have spent the last month or so looking at my diet and researching etc and I'm changing my tactics a little. Thanks for all your input.

So far I've lost 1.5kgs, being on a low GI, low sugar plan that I plan to keep up with. I kept a food diary and noticed that I gorge on sugar after workouts and the food didn't satisfy me, just made me more hungry. Since I've cut out all refined sugar (still eating fruit) and included more low GI foods my apetite has evened out quite a bit and I've lost 1.5 kgs now over 2 weeks. I'm also overloading on vegetables big time and have cut back dramatically on all white flour products (bread, pasta) and many dairy products (I'm taking supplments) and I'm going more for brown rice, brown bread, but in moderate proportions. So far it's working, I'm not so hungry anymore.

My gym plan is 2 times per week with strength training and 2-3 times per week light cardio (i.e. loooong walks) or at home on my elliptical trainer when I can squeeze it in. I'm also doing Yoga at home, I have a good dvd, so 1-2 per week. Phew, the plan so far is going ok, although I'm not managing to do as much exercise as I'd like. I find it hard to fit in everything I want to do.

Thanks for all the support and I'll get my butt into gear soon and use some of the other tools on the site like the food journal etc. I'm on my way!!!!

Thank you Edco, you are both so right that the scale isn't everything...but it was so disheartening to sweat my butt off for 2 weeks and to put on weight! I've looked at my diet and adjusted for that, and it seems to be helping. How is everything going with your journey? You are so right, now I've re-evaluated, I feel like I'm improving my health and my life, it's not a weight-loss plan now, it's a life plan! Fingers crossed I can remain focussed.

Hello zigzag_gal and Welcome to the forum
I too gained weight years ago when I was just starting out. I did exercise and things went well. but, the problem was I was gaining weight intead of losing, looking back I knew it was my eating habits.

HI there...I know, it's so disheartening isn't it when you do all that exercise...but let's see how I go with this new approach to eating. It's tough, but I'm trying! What eating habits were holding you back from losing weight?

Waist measurement

How gross, I just measured my waist and shocked to see it's 39 inches!!! Apparently the healthy range is between 32.5 - 36inches, I really do have a load of work to do. :-(

Do things slowly.
Add water, fiber and all the important things your body needs to keep going.
Do you really need chocolate as something your body needs? no, not at all.
If you feel the munchies coming on, what I do is go and eat carrots, that helps me.
Don't let temptation win over, your much better than that. I want to know you'll do this
My one habit is yogurt Ice Cream which is much healthier than Ice Cream but! I can eat the whole thing in 2 days (Yikes!!) that's my only problem right now.
I'm letting myself eat only 2 tiny scoops when I really crave it. Then gradually stop eating it.
It's not bad to eat a tiny bit of bad food, If we've got one life why not?
but it's how much your eating. If your craving pizza, take a tiny piece. gradually you should stop eating that. but, it takes time and lots of hard work.
