Hi everyone, My name is Lilly. I'm glad I bumped into this website, I think it's just what I need to get back on track...not that I ever really was on track, I have been struggling with my weight forever. I got my own place about 3 years ago, and things were getting good, healthier eating habits and buying the right kinds of foods and snacks, going out for jogs, and hikes (my condo backed on to a conservation area it was great!) I was starting to trim down. but i have recently bought a new house which is being built, and in order to save money i have moved back in with my parents and my good habits have kind of disappeared.

It's much easier when you do all your own cooking, you can easily monitor your fat intake and regulate a balanced diet...I work late hours, and god bless my parents usually when i get home they have dinner ready for me which is great, but being Italian it usually consists of pasta! how many carbs can a girl eat in one day! and god forbid if you tell them you aren't hungry! Geeez....so the dinner situation is a challenge in itself...

I'm the kind of person who would rather play tennis or basketball, or go for a hike then hop on a treadmill. And its hard to find a person or a group of people to work out with...I'll go for a walk with my parents sometimes, but they are old and with the joint problems, can hardly make it around the block... so yet another challenge....

I tell myself that once my new home is ready i will be able to get back on track, but my place wont be ready until Dec 2008 ... I have patients but my health and weight can't wait that long.

I have a few special occasions coming up in late May and would really like to get down to at least 180... and i could use a quick jump start to help me get motivated again, any tips? besides hard work and eating right?

can't someone just wave a magic wand over my head :p

Hello and welcome!
I have changed my eating habits, have eliminated the sandwich lunch and instead I eat just fruit and veg, instead of big dinners I eat salads and fish (obviously I can have a big dinner every now and again... just not every day) and especially important: instead of soda and crap (choc, chips etc..) in the afternoon and midmorning I drink water and green tea and eat fruit! Bananas and grapes, strawberries, they are also sweet and so much better for yourself than chocolate!!
I hope you can find your balance quickly (and just tell your parents your plan, I did, although I felt adamant to it because they are very pushy, and they have just adjusted very well... albeit I don't even see them monthly, only about every 3 months!).
Love, xxMilaxx

Tips requested on when to eat what foods

yes, sometimes i find it difficult to balance my meals... usually I'll have a bowl of cereal, oatmeal, or toast with cream cheese and always pair it with a fruit (apple or banana or OJ) typically my breakfast is grain and fruit. for lunch its usually a sandwich, or meat and veggies, .... and dinner, well living with my parents has the advantage of coming home from a long day at work to dinner on the table. I think i have to get the whole family on my plan...maybe make a meal plan for the week... and give my parents a crash course on cooking light with little salt and little oil. I'm italian...we love our olive oil! I'd hate for my parents to think that i'm not appreciating that they have dinner ready for me...so i'll have to work up some motivation for that conversation, as well as motivation to get my butt in gear and get some good cardio going.

anyways....back on topic.... i heard that fruit should be eaten more in the morning, so your body has the day to breakdown the sugar and complex-carbs (or whatever all this technical stuff is over my head,.... i'd like to learn more about it though) is this true and is there any other little tips like this that relate to other food groups?

Welcome to the forum. I suggest starting a journal, so others can get to know you and see what you are doing. :)

Living with the rents can be a challenge. I can remember when I used to live with them, they lived on pasta too. Good thing though, their pasta was always accompanied by a lean meat. I converted them to eating whole wheat pasta. Plus, my mother, God bless her, would weigh out my serving of pasta and cook it in a separate pot. Maybe your mom would do this for you?

Best of luck to you.

My partner and I do exactly what Steve's mother used to do. We weigh our pasta and cook it separately (and I eat wholewheat). It's a pain because our pans aren't dishwasher proof, so it adds to the washing up, but it's worth it when I see how much less I'm eating.

Olive oil is incredibly good for you, you know - in moderation. We've always used a lot of it, and I haven't actually reduced the amount I use since I've been losing weight. So, I think it must be more about the portion sizes.

Yes, I've started my journal/diary last night. I wish I found this site earlier.

All the support and advice is great! :)

I was watching 'the secret', I don't know if you all have heard of it - - it's about positive thinking and much more.... but the thing that sticks out in my mind the most is 'to tell people your goals, because they will help you achieve your goals.' after thinking about this statement I realized I will have to open the lines of communication more with my parents so they know how serious i am about shedding the pounds. I probably have to prepare a meal plan for my dinners, so when my parents do cook for me at least I wont feel guilty afterwards.

cheers,
Lil

I saw the movie. It is a little too mystical for me. I am a huge fan of positive thinking. And there is science to back it up. I think The Secret has some good parts, but for the most part is old age information wrapped up in a shiny new package.

If it helps you though, it is worth its weight in gold, plus some.
