Intermittent Fasting Experiment

Hello

I will be using this journal to record my intermittent fasting (IF) experiment – it’s been in the media lately and well... I fancied giving it a go. Some history and rationale follows, hope folks will follow along. I have no idea if it will work or go entirely pear-shaped

Ancient History

In my early twenties I was light(ish), muscular and fairly fit. I jogged and lifted reasonably heavy weights on a regular basis.

Recent History

Fast-forward half a decade and I was over 280lbs a heavy drinker and smoker :sifone:. I regularly got tired walking up stairs... Not good. A year later, I stand at 250lbs, drink socially  and don’t smoke. I also exercise regularly again (free-weights, kettlebells, cycling, walking and hiking). It hasn’t been the perfect year; there have been slips (and even jumps) off the wagon. Yet a good 30+ lbs has been lost and has stayed off for a few months now and I’ve lost 10†on the waist. Further, my resting heart rate has dropped from approximately 98 to 63. I am healthier and fitter than I have been in years. Something to be proud of :)

Why IF

Recently, I read a few books on IF that got me thinking – Brad Pilon’s ‘Eat Stop Eat’ and ‘How Much Protein?’ I then had a look at leangains.com, browsed scholarly articles and perused some of the bodybuilding/lifting forums. The literature on IF challenged the majority of my beliefs about nutrition and exercise...

It was in my late teens and early twenties that I became interested in nutrition and exercise. I was looking to gain muscle, strength and lose a little body fat. I educated myself by reading various bodybuilding forums, the magazines and talking to people at the gym. I became socialised into the bodybuilding culture and so adopted the prevalent values and beliefs. These served me well – I became a fit and healthy young man. A year ago, I designed an exercise program (cardio and free weights 3-6 times a week) and a nutrition program, that I’ve been adhering to on and off based on what I considered to be sound principles:

Eat 6-7 small meals per day

Consume protein at every sitting, aiming for at least 1g per lb of bodyweight each day – otherwise you will lose muscle mass/compromise muscle gains

Ensure that a lot of protein (50-70g) is consumed post-workout

Consuming more calories than the body requires will increase weight while consuming less will decrease weights

And so on.

The books I read on IF challenged all those principles except the last one. I wondered if I’d been getting it wrong. To summarise, the recommendation is roughly this: engage in weight training a few times a week, consume meals as you prefer, aim for 70-120g of protein a day and you will preserve muscle mass. Fast for 24hrs or so once or twice a week, this has many apparent health benefits and will also decrease overall calories consumption by 25-30% and lead to fat loss.

I am not capable of evaluating the science. I’m an active researcher (management, training and learning, org behaviour) – so I do have some understanding of quantitative experimental work, but not much as I typically do qualitative case studies. I also don’t have a background in nutrition or sports science. Rather than spending years learning about these topics I’ve decided to just give it a go – a thirty day trial.

The Program

Here is what I will attempt.

Day 1: Fast

Day 2: Eat normally, my active metabolic rate is around 2800 kcal (not including exercise) and perform resistance work: shoulders, lower back & hams

Day 3: Fasted State HIIT (stationary bike) and then aim for a small calorie deficit

Day 4: Fast

Day 5: Eat normally, and perform resistance work: Chest and upper back

Day 6: As Day 3

Rinse and Repeat... or possibly take a day off from fasting, cardio and resistance work. As for food choices: complex carbs, vegetables, fruit, nuts, lean beef, fish and chicken.

I will allow myself some flexibility - at the moment I'm moving house with my partner, starting new projects - and life is generally just difficult right now. So I will do the best I can with this and report as often and honestly as I am able.

As of this morning I am 250lbs, 49.75†around the widest part of my waist. I will look at changes in weight, waist measurement and strength/endurance on compound resistance exercises to decide if this is working or not.

Thanks to anyone who could be bothered to read all of this :hurray:

Hi Naif - - are the fasting days total fast? ( only water ?)....

...

Maryann C.

Hi Maryann :)

Thanks for popping by ! No not entirely, I had some black coffee in the morning, which helped :D Apparently this is okay and came as a great relief - no breakfast and no coffee would have been unpleasant I think!! Also, I made sure I stayed hydrated throughout the day :)

For anyone interested - here is an article (Free) from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

http://www.ajcn.org/content/81/1/69.full

on the effects of alternate-day fasting & feasting in non-obese subjects. It's interesting, however the sample is small, and perhaps the results can't be generalised to the obese. Further, it would have been nice if they had counted kcal consumption and exercise - all the same it did alleviate some of my fears :)

Day 1 - Fast Day

It was fairly easy, not pleasant but not terrible. Easier than eating 6 small meals a day, and the hunger levelled out around 2pm and stayed that way till I broke the 24hr fast. Fairly easy to ignore being hungry while I was occupied :) Didn't notice any ill effects, but couldnt shake the thought that I was doing something dangerous and stupid :S Still time will tell I suppose.

Broke the fast with a nice healthy meal of chicken, rice and salad: KCal - 785, Protein - 76g, Carbs - 81.75, Fat - 14.51g

Eating normally today and looking forward to resistance work later on. Sadly twinged something in my lower back yesterday while moving stuff, so its chest & upperback today instead :)

I don't think fasting is a good idea--But if it works for you, then I guess that's your choice. it's just not good for your body. Can't it be a low-cal day instead? Even eating 500calories would be better than starving your body of nutrients for a day.

HI Sunflower, thanks for posting and for your concern - which I share! Although increasingly I'm being convinced that it is fairly safe and maybe even good for me :S It is not easy to believe these things... no food for 24hrs = bad surely? Searching around google scholar I came across this lit review from 2007, again in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it reviews the existing empirical evidence of the effects of alternate day fasting trials in animals and humans - makes a fairly interesting read http://mikrobiologie.uni-graz.at/lehre_server/MOL735_Literaturseminar/Varady_2007_AmJClinNutr.pdf

DAY 2

Today was interesting, released from the shackles of 6 small meals and lots of protein I had a good sized breakfast, small lunch and large dinner, snacking on bananas and some pistachios in the day. Lifted weights - was good :)

DAY 3

Was a good day, did some HIIT cycling -- it was painful. In the afternoon I went for a walk around 3miles in about 55mins :)

Enjoyed eating a fair bit :D

Yeah, absolutely, I dont think my appetite has changed but food is certainly more enjoyable. Fondness makes the heart grow fonder and all that :beating: Talking of hearts... good news, my partner and I will be reunited and move in together the weekend of the 25th (we both moved back to our parents while we found somewhere new to live).Yay

DAY 4 - was a good fast day,

ate the below + 250g of baby peeled brussel sprouts, but I threw the pack away, probs 700kcal in total

Yay, you're moving in with your partner :D That's so cool. My other half came over from America to live with me in Portsmouth :beating: I do like a good romance!

Brussel sprouts, however?!?!?! They are the devil incarnate. Horrible little green monsters. Well done for eating them though! Very good for you!

Ahh yeah it is going to be awesome
smile.gif
All the way from America... now that's romantic - we are only moving a hundred miles each :auto: Oh and the brussell sprouts... Think I'll be leaving them alone for a while, they looked fresh and tasty in the pack and were ummm not the tasty christmas veggie i remember from last year...Yesterday I ate 200g of raspberries... much better!!

Day 5

Twas workout day, have decided to swtich to a full body workout, with just compound exercises, no squats as back playing up, stiff-leg deadlifts were okay as can keep it nice and tight. Have trouble at the bottom of the squat for some reason - also didnt feel comfortable cleaning 50kg dumbbells from the floor :S Once I have access to my kettlebells I might do two/three sets of front KB squats to failiure with 2x24kgs. Should be good for the old endurance :)

Food was okay, worked out as

Hi Naif,

~ nice news that you are moving back with your sweetie -

- looks like you are managing with your fasting days quite well, and major exercise - way to burn those calories and maintain that muscle.

- will be interesting to see how your experiment goes, what the fasting routine does with weight for you,

- for me - so far, the low-cal days did cause weight loss, but then some rebound water when back to higher-cal ... and then did settle at net weight loss....

Hi MaryannC and Kj67  thanks for posting and for your support, it is still going pretty well  I've been quite busy lately but looking forward to stopping by peoples diaries later !

Day 7: Fast day

Hello everyone!

Long time no post - I moved house, and so, had no internet (Boo!). I have been keeping well and with the exception of a couple of days have kept fairly good records! It is has been going well, I am certainly slimmer. have thrown away my 44" pants and fit comfortably into 42" jeans. Have abandoned a number of 52" formal jackets and blazers to the dark recesses of a wardrobe and will sadly have to search for replacements soon! Hope everyone is super (and smaller), I will update properly later today/tomorrow. A billion things to do on the internet now! xxxxx

Hello,

An update, for the most part I have dropped the 24 hour fasts and opted for 16-22 hours instead, it's easier, fits my lifestyle better and still seems to be a useful method of calorie restriction :) Moving house was a lot of hard work, and blooming expensive :( grr @ paying the rent lol. Since moving I walk a lot more, 2-4 miles four or five days a week. It's not really for my health, its just the easiest way of getting around when my partner is at work/needs the car.

Workouts have been sporadic, but I've been keeping up with them as best I can. Did some kettlebell work a couple days ago and will do some pushups & cycling today :)

Hey Naif - good to see U back & survived your move.

Nice work on needing smaller clothes ! .... a definate sign that things are going the right way.

Good luck settling in at your new place & bonus that you are walking more now.... exercise from necessity that's just part of your daily life is such a plus....

keep up your good work, :seeya:

Hi MaryannC

Many thanks for the kind words :) This is the 28th day, so time for the end of experiment update! I stepped on the scales today to find that I was 17lbs lighter (at 233lbs) and the tape measure showed a 2" and a bit reduction around the widest part of my waist :) I am very pleased to say the least. I havent been this light in at least three years, and can't actually remember the last time I felt so healthy and energetic.

Over the period of the experiment my average intake was:

I've had a good think about it and decided on the following:

1. I will aim to lose 5lbs every three weeks

2. I will only weigh myself every three weeks (ok maybe ill look after 10 days or so but I wont take any notice)

2. I'll aim for an average calorie intake of 1600-1800 calories (given my AMR of 2667 this should be sufficient, and there's a little buffer for any "oops-I-ate-some-chocolate-cake" episodes)

3. I won't stick rigidly to a CV exercise plan, it seems I'm going to be walking anywhere between, as best as I can figure it, 5 and 15 miles a week, that's enough cardio for me, I have an exercise bike if I fancy the odd cycle/HIIT session

4. I like lifting kettlebells more than dumbells (and prefer barbells to kettlebells, but no space and no money for the gym) so that's what I'll lift. I don't want to commit myself to a two, three, four day split, what I have been doing is making sure I workout all muscle groups at least once a week (Squats, Swings, Push-ups, Crunches, High Pulls, Rows, Cleans, Overhead Presses etc). I think making sure I do this, whether its on one day or spread over five, is a lot more sustainable.

5. As for the diet, Intermittent Fasting worked well for me, I will certainly do it from time to time, but I'm not too worried about it, as long as the average calorie intake is in the adopted range.... I will just do what feels most enjoyable on any given day.

6. Counting calories is fine, writing them down on scraps of paper, and updating my excel spreadsheet isn't. So I'm not doing it anymore. I'll start again if my weight loss stalls/goes up and I'm not sure why. But for now, a running tally in my head is enough :) For example. breakfast was approx 550kcal, the ham I ate, about 100, the chicken, pepper, onion&rice doodaa ill make for tea is about 600, I'll have a snack before bed, 400kcal or so. Easily done :)

As I read over this I worry it seems a little lack lustre but right now losing weight is not at the top of myt priority list, spending time with my girlfriend, performing well at work, making money and paying the bills... all these things are more important. What I hope I've worked out is an adequate and flexible plan that will allow me to slowly (and fairly easily achieve my goal of 210lbs by January and 182lbs by May/June)

And if it all works out, when I go to see my family at Christmas (15 weeks today), I will hopefully be another 25lbs lighter... I wonder if they'll notice the difference :)

More updates later, time to prepare dinner!
