My friend and I have been focusing more on low fat then low calories..but everyone i talk to talks about Calories Calories Calories, and that you should not eat more then a certain amount of them...which is more important...

and in order to lose weight, how many grams of fat should you eat a day..For instance, yesterday I only ate 1200 calories, but I ate 14 grams of fat, and I was trying to stay under 10, it seems impossible, and to actually still eat anything..cause I didnt eat high fat anything, but somehow I still went over 10..is a less then 10 gram diet healthy or possible???

Im trying to do everything right, but Im not sure what right is lol

people are right when they tell you its all about calories. Your body stores energy (calories) as fat, so reducing your fat intake wont make the fat go away, reducing the calories which make up the fat will. You actually need fat (good fats) for your health. I'm not sure what all the things are that are affected by good fats, but I know its a lot lol. Plus if you cut out fat your skin and hair will be drier.

Don't go below 1200 calories. Figure out your basal metabolic rate (you can google it) and depending on your activity level, add a few hundred to that and thats approximately how many calories your body burns in a day. You don't want to cut that number drastically or your metabolism will get messed up. Between 1500-1800 calories is what a lot of people on this forum aim for.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

so its not healthy to do 1000 calories? cause I thought that 1200 was my caloric intake to maintain my current weight, cause thats how many I burn a day....

I was just so frustrated that I saw that I had ate 14 grams of fat yesterday, cause I was really trying to go below 10...

so does anyone know what is considered good fat etc...like a bag of chips is bad fat hahahaha I know that..but I mean, what about in the stuff that you dont normally think about as bad...

Dietary fat does not make you fat. As the poster above mentioned, an excess in energy makes you store fat.

And maybe 1200 calories is your maintenance.... if you are 80 lbs.

What do you include in that number when you say you burn 1200 calories per day. Are you taking into account your BMR? That is where a majority of our energy needs are derived.

I didnt take anything into account lol, thats just what I thought for some reason, I really just know nothing that Im doing...I am just now researching some diet stuff to find out how it really works...thats why im asking questions, from people that made it work :)

thanks for all your help

Hi , most people normally need about 2000 calories a day to maintain your weight - 1200 should be the lowest you ever go ( remember if you ever hit a stall you may need to lower again short trem to screw with your system and kickstart the loss again so starting real low leaves you no where to go ) . I keep my intake around 1600-1800 and have been losing 1-2 a week since September.

Now fat wise on a 2000 calorie diet fat is based on 65 grams so I'd say 10 or even 14 is way too low- and keep in mind lots of "low fat " foods use sugar or salt which will just turn to fat later.

Everyone needs some bad fat now and then but good fats are typically avacados , olive oil , nuts , fish , chicken and so on.

thank you...Ive been trying to not eat any sugar, when I look at low fat, or no fat stuff...which has made my shopping trip very difficult, but Ive managed to stay away from sugar, mostly...there are sometimes 1 or 2 grams in the food, but not a lot...

I really do appreciate all the help I can get, I really want to do it the healthy way...

Fat isn't bad for you - saturated fats yoou want to limit but mono-unsaturated fats like in olive oil are quite healthy for you.

-spend some time reading the stickies on the various forums, it will give you a lot of good info.

I hate the label "good fat" and "Bad fat". The only "Bad" fat is Trans fats(partly hydrogenated oils). SCFA,MCFA,LCFA,MUFA,PUFA,SFA,OM3Fa,OM6Fa,OMG9Fa and so on are all needed by the body in their own right. There for none can be called "bad" besides Trans fats which are not needed by the body at all.

Its all about moderation. To much/to little SFA (saturated) and thats bad. Even the oils such as those from Fish oil can be "Bad" if we ingest to much/to little of these.
