Increase Lean Body Mass

I've been reading a lot of different articles lately about increasing LBM. Everything i have read, says nothing about a calorie surplus. The only thing it talks about is weight lifting and using compound movements...(Also, eating 1g of protein per LBM) So, if you can increase LBM slowly by just weight training, what is the point of bulking? Or, do you have to be in a surplus to gain LBM?

The way it sounds, you can build LBM without gaining much fat, but the process is obviously slower. The more fat you add to your body, the more muscle you add, because of the extra fat your body has to carry around, which in turn makes you gain LBM...

With all this said, is a surplus necessary, or were these articles just not mentioning that you need to eat more and be in a surplus?

Oldspice - you are your own worst enemy. Seriously. How long have you been trying to pack on muslce now? How's your progress been? You constantly post threads asking how to gain LBM with no fat gain. Everytime, several forum members tell you that you need to eat more, eat more, and oh yeah, eat more.

Since I started lifting, I've gained about 30 lbs, most of it is muscle. How'd I do it? By lifting, getting enough rest, and eating like a pig. I would not call my bulking phases clean by any means. I did put on some fat while averaging about 5 lbs gain every month. Do I have a beer gut? Nope. Have I ever? Nope. Did I go from a 32" waist to a 33-34"? Yeah. Did I stop bulking for a while when my pants didn't fit me anymore? Yes I did.

Why are you so afraid of gaining a little fat? I guarantee that you will not go from an athletic build to a fat slob by maintaining a 500 calorie surplus. The fat gain will be minimal. Plus, you'll be keeping an eye on it the whole time. It won't creep up on you. Should you eat like a pig like I did? Probably not. Should you follow the diet advice that forum members like Chillen have given you? Absolutely.

+1
Your body cannot put build muscle without fuel. If you have excess fat and are starting out you might build muscle without a calorie surplus but it aint gonna happen normally. You might get stronger as your CNS develops to recruit more muscle fibers but you aint going to build more muscle. I never used to bulk properly and guess what I didn't put muscle on. As soon as I got the diet right I started putting loads on. Just have a cut when you get too much body fat and then start again.

Just indecisive and i went to school for Nutrition. I constantly have people telling me not to eat so much, etc...Cholesterol, not too much red meat, can't eat this, can't eat that...It makes me disarrayed.

I've gained 7lbs in 2 months. I'm not doing bad and haven't notice any fat gain. I'm just doing it very slowly...Every time someone shows me something new, i just post it and try to get more answers. Although, i ultimately know the answer to every single question i post. Realistically, i just need reassurance.

Keep in mind that because you are exercising a lot, normal dietary restrictions do not necessarily apply to you. For example, older people that have desk jobs and don't work out really ought to worry about cholesterol and red meat. You're burning calories at a much higher rate and have dietary needs that are different than the average slob.

This is 100% true. It's just hard thinking that after coming back from class, or being around all my friends who are health nuts! lol

not sure what articles you've been reading, but I suggest you read Dr. John Berardi's site/articles/etc.
Read "Nutrient Timing"

the problem is a lot of the nutrition info being taught is still based on research from 1950. We know infinitely more now, but people are still being taught 1950's ideas.

The USRDA for protein is 60g. I have that much, or more, by my second meal of the day!

The average obese American eats well over 300g of carbs a day, which isn't too far over the RDA.

See the lack of logic in the US RDA's which are part of the antiquated nutrition info still being taught in top universities?
