In need of support and encouragement!!

Hi all, I've just joined this site today with the hope of getting some encouragement in my weight loss efforts.

Have been trying to loose weight on my own, but with no luck so far, so thought I'd see if this will help.

A little about me:
I'm 30 years old and have just recently qualified as a physiotherapists (you'd think I'd be slim right?!!) and as I'm just starting out in my new career I feel like a bit of a hypocrit teaching people exercises and telling them how to live healthily. So think it's time I set a good example. I actually gained most of my weight through my time at university, you end up spending so much time sat on your butt studying! As I didn't have much money I didn't join the gym and didn't go out much so mostly was inactive. I try to eat fairly healthily but find that I end up binging on junk every now and then, and it's not like I deny myself these things normally!

I have one parent that has a terminal illness and the other is disabled, which I find hard to deal with and so find myself eating to stop myself from blubbing every 10 minutes! Slight exageration but that's what it feels like!

I often feel that the people around me (family and friends) don't always get what it's like for me so thought I may as well lay it all on the line here. I guess if I can't be honest on here, then where can I be?!

So, that's me in a nutshell, bet you think I'm a little nuts now eh?! Looking forward to all your wonderful help and advice!

Hey Marie,
Welcome to the site. You have come to a great place for motivation and support. You wont have to worry about feeling that the people around you dont understand you. Everyone is here for the same reason.

DO you have a plan for losing your weight? I'm sure you have a great exercise program but what about your diet?

Keep us posted and good luck with your goals.

My plan...

Ok so I haven't formally made a plan so far, but have looked at the areas I need to work on. Small steps =
1 - increase my CV exercise, currently I don't do a lot at all and am going to aim to do at least 30 minutes every day on 3 days a week.
2 - to increase my water intake, I'm going to aim for 1.5 litres a day, and to cut down the amount of tea I have to a maximum of 2 cups a day
3 - To decrease my intake of sugary foods, any tips on how to accomplish this one??? I don't want to deny myself things as this hasn't worked in the past so maybe I should try having one day a week where I am allowed to eat what I like.

That's should start me off I think!

Those are all great starts. Have you figured out how many calories a day you should be consuming? This is a must because you need to be in a calories deficit to lose.

My tips on the sugery foods are dont have them in the house. You are more tempted when they are infront of you. Also, premeasure or weigh them and just have that amount. If bingeing is the problem (which was mine and still is) recognize the signs and do anything you possible can to avoid these situations.

I do like having a cheat meal/day within reason. A cheat day should be a free day to eat everything and anything. It should be a day to eat something extra that you might not normally eat. My favorite was always pizza. 2-3 slices of a large cheese. But because it is a cheat day it didnt give me the right to follow it up with dessert.

Enjoy your food but dont be to strict on yourself that you will hurt yourself in the long run.

Hope these help.

Good luck with your weight loss... you can totally do it! I have found success in very strict disciple when i started off my weightlos journey. Mine is not over yet... but i found that watching the junk food, drinking half my weight in water ounces, and hitting the gym no less than 4 days a week for at least an hour has really helped me! Feel free to ask questions or visit my journal.....

everyone has their own method though!

BEST OF LUCK GIRL!!!

Heya

Welcome to the forum!

There is plenty of motivation and support available here from like-minded individuals. You can find everything from dietary advice to exercise tips, pretty much anything you need. The most important thing you will find here, though, is the encouragement you need to keep going on days when you don't think you have it in you. :)

You can do it, and best of luck on your journey!

I feel for you - and promise you that the answer is here. It does however take a lot of hard work from you.

If inactivity is a key problem - I would suggest that you become more active. Just because people talk of doing exercise x times a week - does not mean that it would not be a great idea for you to go for a walk every day. In my experience becoming much more generally active is a great move - it burns calories and also provides a window when you are less likely to be eating. Any and all exercise counts...

Nutrition is key too.

There is a lot of brilliant information on both exercise and nutrition in the sections with some great sticky threads.

A major need is motivation. You need to build a support network. You can do this by starting a diary - see who visits (maybe visit them back) and visiting other people in their diaries. You make friends with people that way.

You can join clubs and see who else posts there.

You can join challenges. I am running the Summer Shake Up challenge and you would be more than welcome to join in there. You can make friends by posting in the chat thread.

Generally - regarding support - you get out of it something very similar to what you put in. People that come to the forum regularly and post frequently in other than their own diaries tend to have a vast support network. People that only visit the forum every so often and only post in their own diary complain that no-one is supporting them.
