In 10 minutes a day

I am not exactly sure where to post this but I am trying to loose weight so here works for me.

I should also say I am pretty sure it is going to take more than just 10 minutes a day of exercise to get to where I want to go but I have to start somewhere.

I have recently returned to working out after a long hiatus and I was starting slow due to previously existing injuries and being incredibly out of shape.

I was dong this routine every other day
25 reps
Bench Press – using the bowflex
Chin up – using the bowflex
Dead Lift – Using a barbell

40 reps
Dumbbell single-arm shoulder press
Dumbbell single-arm row
Dumbbell lunge or step-up

15 reps
Barbell bent-over row – Using a barbell
Dip – currently using 2 chairs
Squat – using dumbbells

Nothing heavy just getting myself moving again.

Recently however a family member that knew I was trying to get back into shape bought me Tony Horton’s 10 minute trainer and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions about it.

For my level it looks pretty good you can do 10 minutes a day or 30 depending on your conditions. It is broken down into 5 sections

Cardio
Total Body
Yoga Flex
Abs
Lower Body

And it comes with a schedule that gives you the 1 that he recommends each day for a month with 2 others on the same day as optional. I have watched the dvds and each program has it’s own warm-up and cool down so it amounts to 14 minutes or 24 minutes or 34 minutes depending on how you follow the program. I have watched all the sections and it looks ok to me but what so I know.

I am all set to start it on the 1st of February and I have no delusions here I will be lucky if I make it through 1 ten minute workout that he has but I am going to give it a try.

Does anyone have any opinions/experience of this program or of Tony Horton? I have seen the infomercials for his P90X program and although I looks like a good program for some reason the infomercial annoys me after a few minutes.

Well done matey for getting back into it :) Looking pretty good there just up the weight as you feel stronger and as your wanting to loose weight keep the calories down :)

Best of luck~

Thanks

I started the program this morning and I am happy I survived the 10 minutes of cardio :)

As I suspected I am in pretty bad shape and have a ways to go but I am going to keep plugging away at it

I would go heavier on the weight, and fewer reps per set, assuming your existing/previous injury allows for this.

endless reps with low weight isn't a very effective workout for fat loss or strength gains, and really doesn't build much muscle (you want to build some muscle, cuz muscle burns calories, which makes fat loss a little easier)

OK after a week of the 10 minute trainer here is my take.

It is a good program but it sure as heck is not going to do much in 10 minutes. The theme song “In 10 minutes, you’ve got the time” is well true, I do have the time but in my opinion you will not reach any of the levels of fitness that anyone in the ad has if you only do one 10 minute work out a day. If someone is in worse shape than I am then I suppose the 10 minutes is a good place to start and build on.

However the schedule that comes with this is a 30 minute a day (most days) schedule. There are 5 separate routines; Cardio, Total Body, Yoga Flex, Abs, Lower Body and it is set up for most days 3 routines but 1 day a week 1 routine however it does have a routine that you should do each day should you only do 1 of them.

So, I imagine this comes as no surprise to most on this site, if you follow the 3 routines a day you will likely get results but if you only do the 1 routine a day I would not expect much. Also the Total Body workout in my opinion is to fast and does not spend enough time on any one area to be of much benefit.

Also I all fairness I should add I did not do all 5 routines, I only did Cardio, Total Body, Yoga Flex but I do not believe that doing Abs and Lower Body as a 10 minute work out would get results either.

To clarify a bit this is the schedule that you get if you only want the 1 ten minute workout for the first week

Day 1
Cardio

Day 2
Total Body

Day 3
Yoga Flex

Day 4
Cardio

Day 5
Total Body

Day 6
Yoga Flex

This is the schedule if you do the entire schedule that provide

Day 1
Cardio
Lower Body
Abs

Day 2
Total Body
Cardio
Lower Body

Day 3
Yoga Flex

Day 4
Cardio
Abs
Yoga Flex

Day 5
Total Body
Lower Body
Cardio

Day 6
Yoga Flex
Cardio
Abs

Bottomline, in my uneducated opinion, if you do the full program it is not to bad but do just the 1 ten minute routine a day as the infomercial suggests I do not really think it is worth much unless of course you are in worse shape that I am and need to start slower that I.
