Hello - I'm 33 years old, 6'1" inches tall and current stuck at 240 lbs. My wife and I started our weight loss journey about a year ago. My wife has been very successful and has lost about 100 lbs and she looks great. However, I started at 285 and have only lost 45 lbs. I'm eating 2200 calories or less daily and my weekly workouts consist of 4 cardio sessions in which I do high intensity speed intervals (running one minute, walking one minute) and 3 days of weight training. Don't get me wrong, my body is changing. I'm getting stronger and my cardio endurance is far beyond where I started but I still have more goals to achieve.

I'm burning 800-1000 calories each cardio session and am stuck at 245 lbs. No matter what I eat or do in the gym will allow my body to get lower then 245 lbs. It's very frustrating but I'm dedicated and will continue until I figure this out. My goal is to get to 210 lbs. It's so close yet so far.

I would appreciate any advise that any of you could share with me.

  • Any supplements I should try?
  • Any suggestions, from anyone?

Thanks, I appreciate it.

What good does weight training do in burning fat? All that does is build muscle, which causes you to gain weight, therefore canceling out the cardio as far as weight loss is concerned.

I find myself in the same boat. Im stuck at 248 after dropping 30lbs with relative ease.

I am certainly no expert, but here is what I think i know. Building muscle does help to burn calories and by extension, fat, to the tune of 50 extra cals/day burned per extra pound of muscle, IIRC. So, even if you are building muscle, the weight should still be dropping if you are running a daily caloric deficit.

I am pretty sure most days I run a deficit, but dont always see the results on the scale either. Maybe someone can enlighten us as to why we are so stuck. Perhaps its just a matter of doing something different for a few days, shock the body a bit, at the very least to break it of its routines.

My only other thought is to make sure you are indeed eating the amount you think you are. If you are eating more than you think, obviously the weight wont change, but likewise, if you dont eat enough, the body can enter starvation mode and maintain its weight despite reducing calories.

Any other ideas or suggestions out there?

"stuck" is normal

Hi Andrew,

What is the weight you are aiming for? Are you using the BMI scale? If so, it might be that, in your case, being above 25 is not a bad thing. You might know that a football player can be considered overweight on this scale. However, if the "extra weight" is muscle, he is not really fat. A thin woman can have a normal BMI, yet still be over-fat.

Another way to look at it is considering your body shape. Men usually only get upper body fat. The upper body stores fat in times of stress and some people can lose and gain weight rapidly in the upper body. Losing weight around your neck, face, chest and waist usually goes along with losing fat on the inside as well.

Of course, there is a shape you can change and one you cannot. It is important to know the difference and work on the shape you can change.

Finally, it is important to get enough protein to control cravings and build or maintain lean muscle. I can recommend you an excellent brand if you want.

LOL, Always one....

LOL! There is always one smart @$$ in the group! Actually, weight training does enduce weight gain. You're right! ding, ding, ding!!!! However, training the four major muscle groups also enduces fat loss and continued caloric buring. My cardio sessions should be outweighing the muscle growth. I'm thinking that it's more of a lack of protien or something.... Not sure, which is why I am here asking.
