I'm so confused! Please help!

I am trying to shed some pounds and lean up and doing a real crap job at it. My stats are:

Male
34 years old
5'10"
248 pounds (soft and tubby)
Weight Training 3days/week w/ light cardio here and there.

I have read and read and read one forum after another and I am so confused as to what I should be doing. Currently, I am eating about 1800 calories. These calories consist of:

250g of protein (lean meats, whey protein, minimal dairy)
70-100g of fibrous carbohydrates (100g on training days to accommodate for PWO drink)
The balance consists of a balanced mix of monounsaturates, polyunsaturates, and omega fats (I keep saturates to a minimum)

Please, help me figure out what I am doing wrong!!!!

Hi Fenrael.

First off welcome to the board and hello from a Greensboro neighbor, see you are from High Point.

A few questions

-What is your current weight training in detail
-What is your current diet in detail (food choices)
-How long have you been eating at 1800 calories

Hi theleip

I have read a lot of your posts. Good stuff! So good to have a local here!

My current workout is primarily dumbbell/barbell training:
- Bench press
- Squats
- Curls
- Lunges
- Fly Press
- Deadlifts
- Rows

Also,
- Situps/Crunches
- Jumping jacks
- Jump-rope

I try to keep my routine to 45-60 minutes, 3 days a week. I just got started on this. In fact, this evening is my second WO.

My diet consists mainly of:

Proteins
Chicken, Lean Sirloin, Shrimp, Tuna, Whey Protein, Nuts, Peanut Butter, and some cheeses (like ricotta and cottage)

Carbs
Spinach, Snowpeas, Chickpeas, Romaine, Spaghetti squash, tomatoes, Mixed greens. Except PWO, my PWO is 2 liters of water, 1 liter is Gatorade (for dextrose) and the other is Whey Protein. The ratio for my PWO is 2 carbs to 1 protein at about 60g/30g.

Fats
Olive Oil, Fish Oil, Smart Balance butter. I plan on adding flaxseed oil soon. An average day would be keeping my saturates to about 20% of my total fat intake.

I just started upping my calories after having read so many stickies about metabolism. I was unknowingly starving myself for a couple weeks on the South Beach Diet (less than 1,000/day). Now, I am slowly increasing my caloric intake to get somewhere healthy. As far I have read, I need to get my caloric intake up to about 3,000. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

By the way, are you taking on any new clients? I looked up your site...interested in hiring a professional to steer me in the right direction.

Here's my FitDay link...not much info there, but an accurate description of my diet the last week or so.

Thank you so much, theleip. That's good advice.

I am very glad to hear that I am doing some things right. I will lay off the protein drinks and stick with whole foods more often (except during pre & post WO). How would you calculate the calories I should be getting?

As far as my workout: My plan consists of 1-2 sets @ 6-8 reps each with near-failure weight limits.

I will continue to work on my nutritional and workout habits. Being a total beginner to my new lifestyle has been a considerable challenge. But, damn, it's fun! I look forward to the rewards.

As far as getting a trainer, it is certainly a serious consideration for me. My last real fitness training came courtesy of Uncle Sam, about 15 years ago. My employer helps out with fitness programs, too!

I am going to see how well I do on my own for a bit...but I certainly have your number should I start losing my way.

Thanks for the links, theleip! Berardi knows how to break it down for you. I'll be looking into getting those books as well. Good reads.

I have updated my FitDay for today, if you wouldn't mind taking a look at the dietary adjustments I made (ditching the powders for real food). Your advice has brought sanity to an otherwise insane period in my life. Thank you so much!
