I'm sick of being fat...

..and I found this website through a Google search... I'm hoping that although it's US based, I can find the support and help I'm undoubtedly going to need.

I'm a 29 year old Brit and I've always been fat, ever since I was a young child. I'm married with 2 kids and I hate being a wheezing, out-of-breath fatty when my 3 year old son is running rings around me and wanting to play with me.

The 'slimmest' I've been was when I was 17 and got down to around 200#.

When I was 15, I weighed around 230#. At 20, I was up to 280#. Now at 29, I'm tipping the scales at around 308#.

Yesterday, I bumped into a friend that I haven't seen for a while. This is a girl that's 3 years older than me and has always been bigger than me. Recently, her doctor has put her on some form of liquid diet and she's lost 84# in 6 months! She looks amazing for it and it's made me realise just how unhappy I am with my size.

Although I'd love to lose weight that rapidly, I don't believe it's going to stay off and I don't believe it's a particularly healthy way of going about it. So I'm looking to change my eating habits, cut down on the rubbish I eat and majorly increase my exercise level.

To give you an idea, I build websites for a living and consequently sit on my arse in the office for about 8 hours a day. More, if I'm busy. When I'm not in the office, I'm sitting on my arse in the car, driving home. Then, when I get home, I tend to sit on my arse in front of the TV before going to bed. So, I currently have a very sedentary lifestyle.

So, I'm going to have a good read of the site, hopefully soak up some good advice and start changing my life now, today.

If nothing else, you've given me a place to vent the above and I thank you for that. Apologies for the ramble!

welcome to the site - we've got people from all corners of the globe here - and many of your fellow countrymen.

Hi Kiruji,
Welcome to the WLF!

This site is full of people from all over the world - I'm sure you'll find support, and not just from your fellow countrymen :D

I'm sure it was amazing seeing your friend who has lost so much weight, however I'm proud of you for realizing that it isn't necessarily a good option for you.

After losing the weight - the last thing I EVER want to do, is to do this again ;)

The good news, is you CAN lose the weight...it's one pound, one day, sometimes one meal at a time...one right after the other. Along the way, you'll be building habits that can last a lifetime at maintaining the weightloss.

Good for you for getting started - I know it seems overwhelming at first - just know it's about knowledge, learning to do this smart instead of hard.

Check out or both are sites for tracking calories, nutrition and fitness.

This whole weightloss gig, is nothing more then learning to manage energy in vs energy out.

You CAN do this!

Hey there!
Im a brit too, just to let you know theres a few of us about :)
Best of luck in reaching your goals, hope to see you around the site!

Hi kiruji, from another fellow Brit. I saw your post yesterday but didn't get a chance to reply, so here I am today saying hello.

I'm glad to see you're not going to get sucked into the trap of losing weight as fast as you can (and then probably putting it back on again). Just cutting down on the amount you eat and adding a bit more exercise should see you starting to make progress pretty quickly.

I see M2M has already told you about FitDay and SparkPeople for charting your food and exercise. There's another site that I use that's especially targetted towards the UK, and that's . It isn't free, but I think it's very good. (Well, I don't like paying for anything if I can help it, but I decided this one was worth it!)

And there's no need to apologise for the ramble. You should have seen my first post!

I sympathize with you for your weight gain. At my heaviest I was 220. We all know that feeling of being out of control. But you've come to such a good place. Most of us don't give it long enough to work and I found the first day was the HARDEST. But eating healthy and doing whatever exercise you can do is better than being depressed about being fat. So start feeling good for the changes you will keep making.

WLF is free, and the support and information abundant and it is here everyday to help you along as your questions and concerns arise each day. We are here for you!
