I'm ready!

Just a quick introduction. I'm 6'2" and 350lbs. Late 30's. Father of 3. I have been lurking on here for the last week or so and the support and inspiration here is just what I need. I have made this journey before but always for the wrong reasons. It wasn't to lose weight to be healthy, it was always for an event (wedding, vacation, etc) and after the event I would slowly start to revert back to old habits because I lost my focus. I would convince myself that my favorite shirt didn't fit anymore because it shrunk in the wash, not that I gained weight. Before I know it, I'm back where I started with a few extra pounds for my troubles. I always looked at it as a diet and not a lifestyle change and I think that is an important distinction. I

I am starting off slowly but smart. My first step is to really see what I am putting in my mouth so I have started a food journal over at fittracker. This will hopefully go a long way in helping me. I have cut out the items I know are bad and I am introducing a better balanced diet for me. Getting the right amount of calories with the right balance. Once again the food journal will help me with that.

I see all of the before and after and in between pics and stories and think to myself, That can be me, I can do this! To all of those that have posted your success, please know that those of us that are starting or struggling are looking to you and drawing strength. I look forward to posting my own success one day and having the next "Big Guy" draw strength from me.

welcome and much success on your journey...

Knowing what you're putting into your mouth is a huge step in the right direction... :) spend some time with the stickied threads to givey ou an idea of how many calories you should be getting - keeping in mind that there's no one size fits all number. but it's a guesstimation of a range to shoot for.. and you can always adjust accordindly but you're better off starting with a high a range as possible...

I have read up on all of the sticky threads. I have an idea on the number I need. I just want to make sure that it comes in balanced for me.

I am a little nervous. I have never started a change like this. I have always followed a "Diet" Plan. Just tell me exactly what to eat and I will follow it. I lose weight but have a hard time making that diet a lifestyle and that is why I fail. This time I figure I will actually educate myself and come up with my own plan, A plan that works for me, A plan that I know I can follow because I made it.

Don't be nervous! Making a change will be so much better for you in the long run that doing a "diet" plan. At first, it seems like there is not enough direction because you aren't told outright what to eat. But soon you will get the hang of portion sizes, balancing nutrients, etc. Then you will be so much better off!

Good luck!
