Hi, I'm here because I'm tired of being so unhealthy. I'm 5'6" and when I stepped on the scale this morning it said 297!!! I never thought I'd get this big. :( It's really scary because, I used to hike, roller skate, run around the park with my nephews and now... I get winded after one flight of stairs. I went to my doctor and she told me I'm pre-diabetic and I have high cholesterol. I'm afraid of what might happen. My dad had his first heart attack right after he turned 30... that's only 5 years away.
When I started working for my current employer, I was 265... that means I've gained 32 pounds in just over a year! We've just gone through a huge merger and, there is a table that is always full of goodies and snacks. I'm a stress eater... Not a good mix.
My boyfriend is very supportive but he's bigger than I am and doesn't seem to mind. I love him the way he is but, I want us to both be healthier. My family has always had terrible eating habits and watches TV all day.
On the plus side - I've started drinking nothing but water while I'm at work. Better than soda or super sugary coffee. :) I guess, I just need to be held accountable. Does anyone have any ideas for snacks I could bring to work to help me avoid the table of cookies and candy? Or, am I supposed to avoid snacks altogether? Thanks!

Welcome to the site. You have come to a great place for support.

I would suggest start by reading the sticky threads. There's A LOT of great info in those threads. Next find a plan that will work for you which will lead to long term lifestyle changes.

I was also diagnosed as a pre-diabetic in March 07. I used that as a motivator to change my life. You need to find a plan and stay motivated and you will see results. Stick around and keep us updated.

Hi there!
Glad to hear you've decided to get healthy!! :)
Depending on how you've decided to eat, there are LOTS of healthy snacks. And IMO snacks are VERY important!
Fruits and veggies are always good. I brought a big bag of cut up cabbage today. I bring baby carrots a lot.. nuts are good (but can be dangerous!!). Also, a hard boiled egg, string cheese, a small salad, turkey peporoni... Really, there is tons of stuff...
Snacks are sooo important to me because I know that if I don't have my snack I'll usually get overly hungry and then over eat later. So even when I'm not 'hungry' I try to have something small.
One bad habit I have is to have a diet Dr. Pepper to tied me over sometimes. But I've read that diet products can actually cause you to crave more food... which isn't good. lol
Also, make sure you exercise! :)
And very job good on the water! When I was really losing I noticed that the days I got all my water in a always saw a loss on the scale the next day. :)
Good luck and see ya around!

:)

Thank you both so much!
I went ahead and read the sticky threads. Very helpful!
I know this is going to sound silly but, I never even considered bringing a salad for a snack. That's a great idea!

First off from one newbie to another WELCOME!

I'm no expert, but you need to eat to lose weight... starving yourself won't help your metabolism improve... however it is about portion control and what goes in that counts... if you are always craving snacks, try some light yogurt or a granola bar or something. It works well for me and helps me get through those long afternoons between meetings or stuck on conference calls!

Do the math for yourself... realize what your goals are, find what your schedule is and just start to make it happen. Get those around you (your boyfriend) involved. Explain what you want to reach, and that you need his help because it will mean both of your habits will have to change. If you don't have it in the house you won't eat it... so get rid of all that junky/sugary stuff and start to work on what you two like and what will work...

For example I drink as much water as I can, no soda or even iced tea for me anymore... I do drink juice though and a lot of times I find I can cut calories/sugar and COST because I'll pour a 1/2 or 1/4 cup of juice and fill the rest with water. It's still plenty strong and sweet but makes one bottle go that much further and it doesn't weigh me down with un needed stuff.

I found what has been working best for me now is to actually do the 'math' how many calories do I eat on a daily basis, how much weight do I want to lose, and how much activity am I accomplishing on a daily basis.

Personally I work out very intensely 5 times a week and burn a lot of calories... To maintain my weight WHILE working out I would need to intake around 3,000 calories... obviously the healthier the better, but that would keep me at weight and I wouldn't lose anything either. However if I were to cut those calories down to 2,000 a day and continue that same rate of output then I will begin (and have!) to lose weight.

I hope some of that makes sense to you! I kinda started rambling. The main thing is that you don't lose sight of your goals, especially in concern to your health!

Good luck and I wish you the best!

:)

Wow, thank you! I think tomorrow I'll try writing down everything I eat just so I can get a better idea of how much I'm taking in during the course of a day.
I can't believe how supportive everyone here seems to be. :)

that's great you want to write everything down. Just make sure you are also measure your food with measuring cups and spoons for proper serving sizes.
