I'm new to this entire fitness thing

I've always been pretty healthy. I never get sick or anything. I spent a year roofing and that kept me in good shape. However, I've also always been very skinny. I'm Pacific Islander, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or not as I've been in America all my life. I have a very quick metabolism right now. I don't want my appetite to shoot me in the foot later on though. So I'm trying to get better toned and figured I should join some forums to keep up with the information. I go to the gym and I don't know much of what I'm doing. I spend a lot of time reading the instructions on the machines and I feel like people are looking at me like I'm an idiot.

Welcome to the forum. I'd suggest talking to one of the trainers - it's their job to show you how to use the equipment. That said though, you might want to consider free weights since they're more effective at training your body.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot of trainers available. My uncle owns the facility, so I get free membership, so it's the one I go to. A lot of the college jocks go there, and work there, so I'm very self-concious. The guys who work there and are considered "trainers" (I think), are people I went to school with, so I'm not exactly comfortable with going to them.

I can't do much free weight until I get someone to go with me because I need a spotter.
