I'm new..... HELP

I don't know what to do..... I am so disgusted with myself. I can not even think straight. All I do is eat, eat, eat. I could eat enough for 5 people and still keep eating. I have become so lazy. I hide food. I lie about food. When food is missing I blame it on someone else. I am ADDICTED to food.... Is this possible? I want to loose 50 lbs by the end of July... what do I do?

First of all I just want to say that you're in the right place. This is a great place for help and support. I suggest that you start a diary here. I know that it helps me personally to write down (or type) everything (even the piece of gum) that I ate. I also include any exercise that I do. You know that you have a problem and as corny as it sounds, that is the first step. I have limited myself to 1200 calories per day. That may not work for you but I'm sure we can figure out something that would.

I hope you stick around because I'd love to hear of your success as you continue to work on things. The people here are great! You'll love it!

Okay to start off, make sure your eating 5-6 small meals per day, and when your hungry and its not time to eat, drink 20 oz of water, it'll fill you up to where you won't want to eat. Diet and excercise go hand in hand, if your diet sucks you wont lose much weight, if your excercise sucks, then you won't grow muscle and look lean when that fat is burnt off.

Whatever you do, do not go on Atkins, its horrible for you. I recommend taking a before picture, and then go and pay a photographer to take "after" pictures of you at the end of July ahead of time and sign something that says they get to keep the money if you go there or not. Just writing everything you do down is really good too, whatever you eat, when you workout, and write down when you will workout just like it was a dentists appointment or something like that.

Do not go under 1200 calories, thats basically starving yourself and that eats away at your muscles, which make your bodyfat% even higher. Go to fitday.com and type in a typical day of eating right now then make another day where you get a healthy diet of 20% fat, 30-40% protein, 30-40% healthy carbs.

50 lbs. in 6 months won't be necessarily easy, you'll have to lose 8 lbs. per month, which isn't too hard but it requires some dedication. I don't know what your living situation is but I would not eat out and instead make healthy meals at your home and take them to wherever you are during the day. And If you have your own house, get rid of all the bad foods and bring in the good stuff like vegetables, lean meats, chicken, all that fun stuff.

It probably sounds like I'm nagging but as some people in here can tell you it's a total life change when you decide to lose weight that you may have been carrying for a while. It takes a long time to put it on so it'll also take a long time to take it off.

If you want a full program you can follow, including diet, excercise, and all that fun stuff. Get a book called "Body for Life" it's somewhat strict on what you can do, or get "Body Sculpting Bible for Women" . Both will require you to workout at least 4 times weekly and sets you on a good healthy diet.

If I said all this stuff too meanly or aggressive someone tell me and I'll just erase this lol. Good luck to you Christina and I hope you decide to make a life change for the better, during the day you'll have more energy and you'll be a happier person, guaranteed.

Welcome christina...I completely understand how you feel, I"m sorry you are going through that pain. We are a very supportive bunch and I"m sure you will love it here.

As you know there really is a ton of weight loss 'programs' out there. The best thing you can do is to figure out what is best for you and your schedule. Then you can look at the different diets and decide which is best for you. I've heard that most people that successfully loose weight create their own type of diet.

One of my personal problems is I like to eat when I'm bored. If that is a problem for you as well, you need to get a hobby, start painting, or reading ect. I also find when I get cravings I have a pilates video I use and that really helps keep me focused. You can loose weight without excersize, but I've heard you loose weight alot faster with excersize.

"Dieting" is a committment. You have to make yourself go through the motions even on days when you don't want to. However, everyone has "those days" and its ok, just get up and move on.

Ps...I do believe eating is addictive..esp. chocolate..BUT you can't allow that to be an excuse, you have to fight.

... errtu ... think paragraphs :)

but, basically, i just agree with what they have said so far. A diary is great to track your progress and to get feedback from other members. Good luck.

I agree with everything that people have said here , you will get great fitness/health advice as well as the emotional support , but sweetie when I read your post I saw something much more than,... Oh my god I gained 25 lbs its...like a lil cry for help, words like lying, hiding, addiction are pretty strong signals that perhaps something a lil deeper is going on for you ,...we think of eating disorders as somebody that doesnt eat, but it goes the other way too. I dont know you from adam and I am certainly not saying that is the case, only you can be the judge of that. If you feel that things are really out of control and you can not get a handle on it, or start to implement a change like suggested here...talking to your doctor or getting a referral to a professional that is knowlegeable in this area can help you decide if you are addicted and need extra support.

Or maybe its a bad day,..and you were just being really expressive,..nonetheless GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Also remember that any little thing helps. For example, instead of regular coke, drink some diet coke (which is ok, but you can still do better). It has less calories. Instead of eating regular cheeses, go with light. Don't try to deprive yourself od the food you usually eat, because most people will try to sneak food in and it won't work.

Also, if you aren't too good with working out, walking 3-4 times a week for 30 mins still helps as well.

To lose 50lbs in 6 months require a lot of dedication. For me, its hard starting off. As you can see on my chart it's really starting slow, and I gained .2 lbs.. AH! But I'm not giving up! And it seems to work for people to set a lot of small goals, instead of one big one.

Good luck christina!

Wow! I am so glad I stumbled upon this forum yesterday. You guys are great, truely great. I wrote down all the suggestions from each of you. I really think this might be the start of a new me. As long as I stay with this forum.
I don't get much support otherwise. I am the heaviest women in all sides of my family and friends. It is so hard watching them look at me, wondering what they are thinking. I usually do not wear shorts in the summer, my fiance talked me into it last year while we were camping, he said "who cares what they think, you have no one to impress, I am here for you for life". So I wore shorts and felt okay with it until I saw their faces and the pictures. I cried my eyes out.
I feel deformed. It sounds crazy. I will try to talk to my doctor. She has said that I should loose weight, but I hear that at least once a day. Sometimes people ask me if I am pregnant or when I am due. Thats a shot in the face.
I have to get used to this forum. I dont even know how or where to start the diary. I don't even know how I got in here! LOL I'm a smart girl though, I'l figure it out once I start roaming around.
I don't even know you guys but I can't wait to read on and learn more from you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Your doctor is a good place to start. She should be able to help you work out a good nutritional diet that will help you loose weight.

Hey Christina, I went ahead and copied and pasted some tips I wrote out for 4me when she first joined. I'm definitely going to be repeating some of the stuff the other girls said, but it's all tried and true advice.

Your body needs food, just like it needs air. Look at it this way: an animal would never just give up eating (unless it was very sick.) We need to eat to survive. The difference between eating healthy and eating unhealthily is what will make a difference in our weight. Using healthy foods will give your body the fuel it needs to look and perform at it's best. If you use unhealthy foods, your body won't run as well. It's kind of like the difference between putting premium gas or cheap regular gas in your car. The car runs better when you use the premium. So here are some tips:

1. ALWAYS have breakfast. A bowl of heart healthy cereal (like Raisin Bran or Cheerios) with some skim milk will do. You can add a sliced banana or some berries. Or if you don't like cereal, scramble yourself an egg and have it with a peice of fruit, or have some whole wheat toast with low sugar jam. Just get some food in you first thing! Breakfast gets your metabolism moving.

2. Drink lots and lots of water! You need it to stay hydrated and it will fill you up and cleanse your system.

3. Have small healthy snacks in between your breakfast, lunch and dinner. A cup or peice of fruit. A low fat yogurt. A handful of almonds. A cup of carrots. Celery with low fat peanut butter. Small snacks will keep that metabolism moving and will stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day.

4. Exercise! I know it's tough, but once you get into a routine it will make you feel great. Cardio and strength training are best for weight loss, but do anything that makes you feel good, whether it's yoga, pilates, swimming, or dancing to music. Get your heart pumping and your muscles working and you'll see a difference.

5. Have realistic expectations. I will never ever look like Gwenyth Paltrow. I just don't have that kind of body. But I know with the right diet, exercise, and attitude I may someday be able to look like say, Kate Winslet or Jennifer Lopez. Everyone's body is different. Remember, your goal shouldn't be to be super skinny-it should be to be super healthy.

6. Give yourself small rewards. If you have two weeks where you do your new healthy diet perfectly, go ahead and get yourself a manicure or a new lipstick. Anything that makes you feel good that isn't food. Just don't get addicted to spending money! Use this technique sparingly, just like everything else.

7. Remember, once in awhile it's okay to have a food treat. Just make sure you're controlling your portions. If you want ice cream, don't buy a whole tub and then have it sitting there in the freezer waiting for you. Go out to an ice cream place, get a small cone and enjoy it. Just don't make it an everyday treat and don't overdo it.

8. Take animals and small children as an example. Older kids and adults are swayed by advertising. Little kids only eat what they need and they eat what their parents give them, which should only be healthy good for you food, with a treat now and then. They stop when they're full and have no knowledge of all the crazy packaged processed goodies that older people eat. Animals also only eat what they need to survive (except Jennylee's cats!) My cat eats when he's hungry and walks away. He hardly ever finishes a full bowl of food in one sitting.

9. My favorite rule of thumb is to stick to the foods the earth provides us. Fruits, veggies, legumes, whole wheat. Unprocessed foods are a key to good health. The more color the better. Bright red strawberries, juicy oranges, sparkling blackberries, shiny carrots, rich leafy greens-they are all so bright in color because of the incredible amounts of nutrients and vitamins that occur naturally in them. Anything white should be avoided, like white bread, pasta, rice, but browns are okay. Whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, oatmeal-all of these things are heart healthy. Just make sure you're controlling your portions. Too much of anything is not good.

10. Finally, make sure you keep your food diary! It helps so much. You'll get support and you'll constantly have a reminder of what you're eating. Make sure you log everything, drinks and random bites off of other people's plates included. Before long you'll start to realize when you eat because you're hungry and when you eat because you're bored, sad, happy, ect. Keep your hands busy when watching tv. I think Jennylee got herself some word puzzles to do, which is a great idea. I play with my cat or I keep a book or magazine around and sip water. Knit. Whatever, just don't let yourself eat out of boredom.

After a few weeks it will get easier and easier and eventually when you try to eat bad food it will make you feel so crappy you'll think twice about doing it again. Look around the forum and read people's diaries to get ideas about what you should be eating to lose and you'll get fun and tasty ideas for foods to try! Good luck Christina and remember, if you need any help or have any questions we're all here for you!

Oh another thing. Apparently people that are most likely to succeed in losing weight is the people who actually talk to a professional or a doctor about it. So I recommend you going to talk to your doctor, dietician, etc.
