I'm back..... again!

I decided to restart my diet for the third time.

I originally started in 2008 and lost about 25lbs. That diet lasted about 3 months. The reason I quit? I have no idea.
Then in the middle of 2009 I started again and lost about 20lbs over a 3-4 month period. Why did I quit that time? No idea :) I guess I just got bored and stopped keeping track of what I was eating.
So, now we come to my latest diet attempt, which I began about 3 weeks ago. It's basically the same diet I was doing before, I'm trying to stay around 2000-2300 calories a day and exercise more than I normally do. So far I've lost 7.4lbs which puts me at 316.6lbs.

One thing I'm doing different this time is using my Iphone to keep track of my calorie intake. I'm using a program called lose it! which is free.
Using my Iphone does make it a little easier to keep track of things since I almost always have it with me.

Right now I'm 100% focused on sticking with my diet for the long haul, but I had the that same mind-set before and look where it got me.
But still, dwelling on past failures won't do me any good now, I just have to try and stay focused and stick with it.

Welcome back! I am like you as well. Started, stopped, started, stopped. The one thing I realized that made a difference for me, was coming here everyday. So now this site is one of my homepages. I knew exactly why I stopped each time. I was in Biggest Loser style challenges at work, and when the challenge ended (I won every one of them) it was like a free pass. "We'll I lost X amount of weight, I deserve to eat ______.... I worked out 6 days a week, it won't kill me to miss a day at the gym." and it all spiraled. It reminded me of Erik on Biggest Loser 2 weeks ago telling his story about how he regained all of his weight back. Thats me! I said. Anyways... we're back on track though and thats what matters. Good luck and lets do this and keep the weight off for life!

i know the feeling. I am once again starting over because i quit. WHy i quit, i dont know. I'm with you G!! We need to flip that switch in out minds ang get our head wraped around this

The trouble I had was when I first lost 40lbs, I did it by cutting out all the stuff that i like eating, so once I was feeling a bit better about my weight and how I looked, I slowly started eating all that stuff again...

This time, i am trying to do it in moderation - not deprive myself of the things I like, just only eat small amounts of them, whilst doing a lot more exercise. I figure that this is a more sustainable long-term pattern that I can keep up for how I live my life rather than an immense effort for 6 months then revert back.

Good luck G17 - hope things go well for you this time.

@ChefAshley

That's a good idea setting this website as your home page. I may try that myself.

I think the problem I've run into is treating weight loss as a hobby/fad. I don't know about anyone else, but when I have a new hobby/interest I kind of obsess over it for the first few months. Reading all about it, joining discussion forums and of course doing it... But after the initial rush, it generally gets pushed to the back burner as I go back to my old interests/hobbies.

@SilverMetal

I've seemingly been groping around in the dark for years looking for that switch lol. Though sites like this give me hope, seeing people who have persevered and reached their goal.
After all, if they can do it why can't we?

@jjjay
That's why I like calorie counting (in theory at least) because I don't have to cut any specific food out of my diet. Though it's kind of imaginary freedom, because it's awfully hard to realistically stay within a reasonable calorie range while eating junk food. I could eat that 500 calorie piece of cheese cake, but only if I'm willing to go without dinner :)

Hi G17!

I used Lose it! for quite some time, but now I'm suing MyNetDiary (lite version is free, pro is .99), I like it a bit more (name brand foods and such) but I find both work well, and it's true it's so much easier to track when it's right in your hand. I think it will really help you this time as long as you keep yourself accountable!

Have a great day :D

Your right, i do the same thing. I do treat it like a fad/hobby too! Thats really bad but now that its out there, it will be easier to face. yeah reading up on it is a good idea, but im still trying to find that little push to get me beyond the one month mark. Its where I always fall HARD.

Well, G you and I are in the same boat, hopefully we can work off eachother

I've now been on my diet for a full month. It feels good to get that first month out of the way, since many of my previous dieting attempts have failed within the first month.

I feel like I did really well this past week. I never went over on my calories, and I managed to do at least 20mins of exercise per day. I also started incorporating green smoothies for breakfast into my diet, which should help me get more fruit and leafy greens into my diet.

Unfortunately despite my effort the scale didn't give me much to work with this week. I'm only down another 0.2lbs this week, making my total four week loss 7.6lbs. Hopefully I'll see some better numbers next week.

7.6 lbs is AWESOME for a month! Your exactly where you should be!! I'm so proud of you! Get over the month and run into the next! Lets see you match 7.6 lbs next month too!!

Week five update:

I made it through another week. I've continued with my daily exercise, and I've stayed under my calorie limit all week.
The scale shows a 1.8lb loss this week, making my 5 week total 9.6lbs.

I've been a little disappointed that even after a couple weeks of daily exercise, I still get tired out at about the 20min mark. I was hoping I would be up to 30+ mins by now. I guess it just takes time.

All in all though things are good.

Week 6 & 7 Update:

I've only had one bad day during the past two weeks. I went to movies during week 6 and went about 600 calories over that day. Other than that things have been good with my diet.

I mentioned in my other posts that I have been trying to exercise everyday, and I've manged to stick with that for the most part. Mainly my exercise has consisted of light stuff that I can do at home, but on Monday I decided to try the gym out... I thought for my first time I would just do some cardio, so I hopped on the elliptical. I felt like I was going to die after only a few minutes. I did stick with it though and managed to do 15 mins plus a 5 min cool down. The problem is that since then my upper legs have been really sore. I'm hoping that by tomorrow (Thursday) they will feel up for having another go.

My weight is currently at 311lb which is a 13lb loss since I started. 3.4lb loss in week six and 0.2lb loss in week seven. I figured after the big loss in week six that week seven would have a small number.

Week 8 update:

I've been working hard. I've gone to the gym 5 out of the past 7 days. I've been alternating between the elliptical and treadmill for cardio and doing weight lifting every 2-3 days depending on how my muscles feel.

Unfortunately the scale hasn't been impressed by my work. I'm up to 311.3lbs which is a 0.3lb increase since last week. Maybe the gym workouts have temporarily freaked my body out. In any case, hopefully by next week I'll see things turn around.

Update:

I know I haven't kept this thread up to date, but despite that I have been continuing my diet.
I'm currently down to 287lbs which is probably the lowest weight I've been at in ten years.
I've had the occasional bad days/week, but I haven't let those derail me from my goal this time around.

I've slacked off as far as going to the gym. Since the beginning of Sept I've only gone a handful of times. It seems like whenever I plan on going something comes up and then when I do have free time I don't feel like going.
I'm probably going to have to completely start over on my weight training.
Hopefully Oct will be better as far as making it to the gym.
