If you were going to cinema. What would you munch?

Well tonight i'm off to the cinema with a friend, and I really don't want to eat a load of crap like I usually do.

So that means chocolate, hot dogs and popcorn is out.

Soooo what would you take/get if you were in my shoes? I have to have something to munch on during the film - if I don't take something, I guarantee i'd end up buying something thinking 'what the hell'.

Ideas folks? :)

Try self-restraint? ;)

Eat a proper dinner before you go and suck on Foxes Glacier Fruits in there. Or mints.
The cinema is one of the few places where no amount of looking at the food will find a 'healthy' option. Like a football ground too I suppose.

i guess i would have a medium diet coke or pepsi max and take a pck of chewing gum or something maybe have 1 or 2 sweeties xx

A medium diet pop and nothing else.

I know it's different in some places, but I hate nothing more than people who mistake a cinema for a restaurant or a pub. Listening to people munching on their popcorn, rustling of crisp bags and whatnot is really irritating, and the smell of other people's food (especially hot dogs and stuff) is disgusting.

So I agree, eat something proper before hand, and just have a drink. Problem solved.

It may not matter much in a blockbuster but the sound of chomping and slurping can indeed kill a quiet scene. Apparently some people are not raised to chew with their mouths closed....

totally agree with that it annoys me when people shovel handfuls of popcorn into their mouths like it was thier last meal

I never get any popcorn or other foods, just a small diet cola :)
Eating while watching tv/dvd/whatever is a bad habit imo.

I would suggest popcorn without anything on it if you can get it and water to drink. Maybe some sugar-free hard candies to satisfy any sweet cravings or gum as someone else suggested.

As people have already said, having popcorn or something that is noisy is dependent on the type of movie your going to :)

It certainly can be, if it is a habit. But I don't have a problem with getting munchies when at the cinema, especially if its a now and then occasion. Same as getting munchies for a film night, I do that whenever I have a film night with my pals or Gran. I don't eat when I watch tv or dvds in general though. Just on occasion, so I don't see it as a issue :)

Wow ok! I never really thought people felt like that to be honest. At a cinema it's a kind of given that people will be eating.

I don't really have a problem with it myself. Things like hot dogs would be eaten before the film starts. And well popcorn, if it we didn't have cinemas, when would we eat popcorn? :p

To be safe, eat before you go, and while you are there sip on some water.

Let's face it, the popcorn will be filled with butter and salt, (heart attack in a sack) I call it.
The candies, ridiculously sweet, and soda or pop, not good, not even the diet ones, sorry, I am not a fan of artificial sweeteners, they don't taste good and I don't believe anything that was made in a lab as a substitute for sugar is good, sometimes, as the song says, there is nothing like the real thing.

Now you can take a chance on the hot dog, but the sodium would stiff a horse, maybe if they boiled it and you only used mustard, so no, eat before you go, and sip on water, that's what I do now.

Popcorn isn't that bad in England actually... Can be pretty bad though, salted obviously has loads of salt and sweet has loads of sugar but in general it's just popped corn. They don't do butter and stuff over here. I think youc an get plain popcorn if you're bothered :)

I think most people feel like that. Sometimes it seems like walking into a chimps tea pary.

Op, have you considered MAKING something to take along with you? I make rice crispy treats all the time to take with me, they're easy to wrap in saran wrap and (mostly) quiet to eat. They ARE a treat, and high-ish in calories for their size, but much better than anything at the theater.

Also, if you can get plain popcorn and just barely salt it for yourself, that's an awesome treat! Barely any calories, and tons and tons of fiber. :D

I agree! Artificial sweeteners have been shown in SEVERAL studies to cause weight gain/hinder weight loss. They also cause headaches, bloating, fatigue, depression (seriously). I used to drink three-four diet drinks a day (when I was 12-13 nonetheless), and when I did some research and realized how bad it was for me, I realized that all the symptoms I was having went away when I stopped! Just FYI :)

Lol! :smilielol5: Especially in Texas! It's almost like a freaking cookout the way they do it! :D

(ETA, I seriously did not notice you were from TX! Sorry if that offended you in any way :) )

Ok, I'm leaning to the dark side...i guess. No one wants to feel left out & if eating at the movie is a habit amongst those you go with, you WILL be confronted with their yummy treats. if you don't have your own, eventually you'll probably cave & have some of their popcorn or whatever.
In the US I take a purse with me. I stop by the $1 store & buy myself a treat. Usually some sort of gummy candy. Like peach rings. They are no fat...basically a bunch of sugar/calories. But at least you get something & you don't have to sit there feeling all crappy about your "diet". After all, we will face this situation a million times if this truly is a lifestyle.
I figure, if you're eating the sugar & empty calories, you have to make up for it the rest of the day by making better choices so you have that calorie allotment free. Don't compound it with soda. Get or bring a water. The popcorn with butter is truly a sin. You could easily go over your sodium & fat allowances with just that. Sooo not worth it.
Heck, if you really want popcorn, what about bringing a small pre-popped low fat microwaved kind?
Just don't disrespect the theater by bringing in your own food & leaving a mess! Take out your carry ins. Just MY 2 cents.

BTW- Mindlessly eating in front of the TV or PC is BAD, Bad, BAD. I used to do it & I snarfed down so much crap without thinking, it's not even funny! But, unless you go to the movies ALL THE TIME, it shouldn't be THAT big of a deal.

i find going to the cinema makes me feel like i HAVE to eat to enjoy the movie.. and it is mindless eating too b/c its so dark you can see how much you have consumed. so i try not to go. (the 15$ movie ticket also deters me!)

but if i do go, i usually get a fruit smoothie (from yogen fruz!) and i find someone to share a small bag of popcorn with. that way you dont eat that much!

It depends a lot on what you're seeing of course. For Transformers III - chomp away, for The Kings Speech, a little more restraint is called for.

I was actually facing this the other week. I made sure I ate my normal meals for the day but budgeted enough extra calories for a few movie treats then I brought along a bottle of water, a 100 calorie pack (chocolate pretzels) and two mini 45 calorie Halloween snack treats.

It was enough so I could much on a few sweets during the movie but because I still ate before and budgeted for the small treats it wasn't a huge splurge :)

I generally buy a large water bottle and bring in some candy buttons. They don't have many calories, and they take so long to take off of the paper. Also, a way to keep from buying anything is leave your money at home or in your car so you have no money to buy anything but the movie ticket.
