If I go from eating 1100 calories up to 1700 everyday, would I gain a lot?

My calorie intake is stably at 1700, but I burn off up to 600 calories everyday at the gym; so my actual intake would be around 1100. Financial issues and summer school are preventing me from working out as much. If I were to continue eating 1700 calories a day and not burn off any calories I usually do, how much weight would I gain? I don't think I can seriously eat just 1100 calories everyday.

I read that one pound of fat is 3500, so eating an extra 500 calories per day will cause you to gain one pound a week. So surely I'd gain at least one or two pounds after a week of not working out.. but after that initial week, would I continue to gain it or would my weight just maintain?

Please help, I've been so stressed about this. :( Thanks in advance.

It depends on your body and how much you gain. If you gain so much that your 1,700 calories actually maintains your new weight then you will of course no longer gain, you will most likely continue to gain until your new weight equals the same maintaining value as your caloric intake. You are correct in that 3500 calories is equal to a pound of weight. If you don't want to gain weight and you are not going to be burning those extra calories anymore I suggest cutting back the calorie intake. However if you chose to gain weight you will need to do the math accordingly.

PS - You don't need to go to the gym to burn extra calories. You can take the stairs, park farther away, etc. There are a lot of things one can do to add more calorie burn to their day. There are also exercise that one can do at home. Also, believe it or not, fidgeting helps burn calories as well. Any additional movement helps.

Unless you weigh less than 115 lbs right now, you should not gain weight on 1700 calories. Even then, you shouldn't gain a lot.

Also, as Stacy pointed out, as your weight goes up, your calories burned goes up just by maintaining more body mass. So if you stay stable at 1700 calories you could potentially creep up to 120 lbs or so but then if you didn't eat more you'd stay there.

If you can't go to the gym then just try to stand and move more. Don't sit on the couch & watch TV. (I know, doing homework has certain requirements) - just move more and you should be fine.
