Ideal weight and size ratio.?

We all know muscle is heavier by volume than fat.

This is my measurements in my legs, (1% fat).
Ankles - 11 "
Lower calf - 11"
Upper calf - 17"
Knee - 16"
Lower Thigh - 21"
Middle Thigh - 24"
upper thigh - 28"
inside leg - 31"

My upper body measurements.

Hips - 39"
Weist/stomach - 46"
Lower chest - 39"
Middle Chest - 40"
Upper chest - 41"
Shoulders - 46"

Weight 16st 5 pounds (229 pounds) (104kg)
Hight 5ft 9 (125cm)

I am currently losing weight, I was 17stone 5. (243pounds).

I would like an ideal goal to go for. I want no stomach. Ideas to get rid of it fastest way possible?

Should I buy a multi gym, a rowing machine, weights, or just get fit by walking, doing a few sit ups?

Just remember its my top half I want or need to tone up.

You can't focus or target fat loss. You will have to lose from your whole body and let the fat come off where it will.

Also, while I realize you want to "tone" your upper body, you need to work your whole body to develop balance.

Id' suggest reading the sticky posts in the exercise area to get an idea of how to combine cardio and weight/strength training to get the results you want.

I am on a diet, and the weight is falling off.

However, this was my measurements before I started the diet.

Weist - 51" - Now 46"
Hips - 41.5" - now 39"
Ankles - 10" - now 11"
Lower calf - 10" - now 11"
Upper calf - 17" - now 17"
Knee - 16" - now 16"
Lower Thigh - 19" - now 21"
Middle Thigh - 23" - now 24"
upper thigh - 27" - now 28"
inside leg length - 31" - now 31"
Lower chest - 42" - now 39"
Middle Chest - 42" - Now 40"
Upper chest - 44" - now 41"

As you can see, the weight is coming off the top half, not the bottom. I want to know the best ways of targeting the top half only.

I walk 400 steps at most per day due to ankle problems, however this is more like 10,000 steps for my legs. I have legs of a rugby player, but the torso of a really over weight man.

Did you read anything written above?

YOU CANNOT TARGET FAT LOSS.

Period. You can't. You just keep losing weight and eventually it will come off of the top as well as the bottom. There is no way to force weight to come off of specific parts of your body.

To tone your body like you want, youre going to need to lower your entire body fat percentage. This means working all areas of the body.

You cannot target a certain area of the body. Period. Its an all or nothing deal.

Keep focus on the exercise/diet, and if needed add additional exercises to make sure your entire body is being worked.

You will need to have it measured. There are several approaches with varying degrees of accuracy. Are there any health clubs at all in your area? Most will do it for free.

The other thing to keep in mind is that body fat measurements are basically just rough estimates. You will want to get measured again every few months using the same method. And that will tell you what is happening fat wise at least.

Then why would I lose weight, but get bigger legs?
Because fat and muscle are two different things.

Without knowing specifically what you're eating and what exercise you're doing, I can't really give you more specific information.

The bottom line is that in order to lose fat all over your body, you'll have to control your eating, and combine that with exercise that works your whole body.

Okay, You see I wouldnt mind if I was fat all over.

Its just my belly. that whole area is big. I just want it gone. My legs are not fat, they are muscle, my chest is nearing 2-3" total to be lost. and my stomach has 46" of fat. this can't be the 34% I have been told, can it?

So if I go to a health club and see what % of fat I am, would that count muscle as fat?

I am eating, fish, and salad once per day. I am on sole source, and walking over 10,000 steps per day. I also do 25 sit ups.

Body fat goes on the body based on your genetics. When you start adding fat, it might be..say..my hips for me but for you it starts on your arms. We gain weight but then we start losing weight. The last place I would lose it would be my hips in your arms.

It's a first on, last off mentality. That is why you hear people say 'I've lost all this weight but I've always had fat on my hips'. It's also why people complain about belly fat staying on cause for most people, that's the first place.

It's like the stickies are there for decoration ;)

top half got smaller and lower half got bigger while losing weight? you're likely working your leg muscles, which have strengthened some and gotten bigger. Top half? likely took some fat off.

fat is going to come off where its going to come off, there's no targeting it unless you can change your DNA.

So, my legs get bigger, and my top half gets smaller with this diet, thats all fine, but why do people say do sit up to target belly fat?

Ok, let's try this again: You cannot target fat loss. :)

I get that your fat is concentrated in one point of your body. I get that you don't like that. Most of us have fat in areas that we don't like and the most common is belly fat. Most of my remaining fat is located on my belly, hips, and thighs. Most men tend to have "beer bellies" or "pot bellies" where they store fat.

It doesn't matter - you still can't target it. You have to let your body lose fat where it decides to and eventually you'll lose the fat around your middle as well.

and my stomach has 46" of fat.
No, your stomach does not have 46" of fat. There are also muscles, bones, and organs in there.

this can't be the 34% I have been told, can it?
The 34% is your TOTAL BODY FAT. You cannot target fat.

So if I go to a health club and see what % of fat I am, would that count muscle as fat?
I don't understand the question ... if they measure your fat would they count muscle as fat? Um .. no. Why would they count muscle as fat when measuring fat?

I am eating, fish, and salad once per day. I am on sole source, and walking over 10,000 steps per day. I also do 25 sit ups.
I would suggest a few things:

The first thing I'd suggest is registering for a free account on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

The next thing I'd suggest is checking out the various sticky posts in the exercise area of the forum (Weight Loss Through Exercise - Weight Loss Forum). There are some very good posts on exercise, both cardio/aerobic and on incorporating weight lifting into your exercise plans.

I'm going to say it again for the last time: You cannot target fat loss. You have to lose fat from all over your body. You need to do that by eating healthily, in a reasonable calorie level, making sure you're getting the right kinds of nutrients ... AND ... by doing a reasonable amount of exercise in a combination of weight/strength training and cardio.

why do people say do sit up to target belly fat
Because they don't know what they're talkinga bout. Doing situps/crunches simply strengthens the abdominal muscles. They're not even the best exercises you can do for the abs.

They do diddly squat for removing fat. The only thing that will remove fat is burning more calories than you take in. YOu do that via a combination of proper eating and exercise.

I fully understand.

I just want this gone. I am on the cambridge diet, which I hate as I am not eating real food.

My ideal way to lose weight is the following.

Eat 4 meals per day.
Exercises and make sure I burn more than I eat.

I have gained 6 stone in 7 years. Lost half a stone before an operation due to 6 weeks of walking for 2 miles per day. I was 17 stone 6ish and before this I was at least 18 stone.

I am thinking of buying something that will help burn the fat.

I know the fat will come off all over me, thats fine, I have no fat on my legs so that will balance it out well.

My only problem is what do I get?

Please note I lost a testicle so anything like cycling is out.
Walking is not the greatest due to poor ankles.

I was thinking of getting the following.

Or what about other fat burning ideas?

I may of said I plan to walk over 10,000 steps per day.

Lord, ok listen.

Stop then. Why eat stuff like that when you can just eat normal food and still lose weight.

you can eat 4 meals or 6 or whatever..as long as you eat less than you burn. It's that simple.

I am thinking of buying something that will help burn the fat.

And soon as you find an item like that which works, invest all your money into it cause you will become rich..that or look for the holy grail cause you are just as luck to find that. You don't need crap like that. Weight loss is calories in vs calories out. Period.

Walking works. You don't have to have the others but the dumbbells won't help you lose weight, they will help you with your muscle loss from a calorie gap.

You seem to be locked in a loop where you're not hearing what we're saying.

There is no magic bullet here. There are no pills, creams, methods, or devices that will magically help you. There just isn't.

The way you lose fat permanently is this:
Eat reasonable amounts of healthy foods
Do a combination of cardio and strength training exercise - it doesn't have to be walking, it can be any variety of things

That's it. That's the sum total of the way to lose fat, get healthier, and get fit.

If you don't like the cambridge diet, then get off of it. It's an extreme and unhealthy (IMO) diet anyway.

I don't understand the not being able to bicycle thing - I have a two word response to that: Lance Armstrong.

As for walking due to weak ankles, walking will help that.

Everyone is out of shape when they first start working out. The more you do, the better you feel, the more you'll be able to do.
