IAmGoingToTri's Diary

93.8 kg this morning. Another step forward.

Even thought I don't want to care too much about my weight loss rate, like I said above, it's not true that I don't care at all. So, I went to do some calculations (because I like numbers ;)):
If I lose 0.5 kg per week, I will reach my goal weight at mid June next year.
If I lose 0.75 kg per week, it will be the mid of March next year.
If I lose 1 kg per week, I will reach this weight in the beginning of February next year.

I think all of these are fine. It's interesting to see how much difference there is between losing 0.5 and 0.75 kg (3 months) and how little there is between losing 0.75 and 1 kg (only 1.5 months). Mathematically, this is logical, but intuitively it's not what I expected.

Anyways, I am still not going to aim for a certain rate. I think that my weight loss rate will increase by itself, just because I am improving my lifestyle. There will be weeks that I lose less than 0.25 kg, and there will be will weeks that I lose over 1.5 kg. If I had to guess, I would lose 0.75 kg in an average week.
By the way, if my weight loss rate were only 0.25 kg per week, I would still be happy, even though it would take me almost 1.5 years to reach my goal weight. I think this is my average rate since I started, but I must add that there was a lot of trial and error in between as I was figuring out what works for me, and I have learned a lot about that now which I am applying right now, and I quit smoking, which also doesn't help if you want to lose weight. So, I am expecting to be able to lose considerably more in the next months.

Also, it's false to assume that I am "done" when I am there, and that I am "not done" when I am not there yet. It's not binary. Every step that I make forward is great (for example the 4 kg that I lost already make a lot of difference) and when I reach my end goal, I still will have to maintain my weight, perhaps for half a century or more!

All true. I think it'll be hard to lose 0.75 kg a week while building (or at least not losing significant amounts of) muscle mass but if you remain patient and dedicated time will tell.

That's a good point. My goal is not really to build muscle mass in that time, but I also do not want to lose much of it. So, if I have to lose slower to accomplish that, it's worth it.

Another reason I prefer to lose not to fast is that I am slightly worried about is loose skin. I say slightly, because I am quite sure that I can avoid it, because I am still relatively young and my weight loss, compared to my size, is relatively small. However, I have weighed 106 kg (234 lbs) and my end goal is 75 kg (165 lbs), so that is a difference of 31 kg (almost 70 lbs). That means that I will be almost 30% lighter when I am done than when I was at my heaviest, which makes me think that there is a risk that I may have some loose skin if I am not careful. I read that if you lose weight slowly, that it reduces the risk of loose skin. So, if I were to suddenly lose weight at a rate of 2 kg per week, I would not be happy about it and I would try to reduce it.

Fortunately, I am quite tall (188 cm, 6"2) and broad, so this further reduces the relative amount of shrinkage, and thus the risk of loose skin. Finally, I will build some muscle when I am done, which could help a bit too.

Anyways, I'll lose weight in a responsible way and I hope that the results will be good.

With your youth and muscles I don't think you are going to have a loose skin problem, also you did not let your weight get too out of hand. I am 60 and so I am experiencing some skin problems; under my upper arm and my face and neck, but the rest of my body is still ok after 18.5Kg. I still have 12Kg to go but I am not expecting too many problems. I would sooner have loose skin than fat any day.

@Dave - that sounds good, I hope that's the case. I also agree that I would prefer loose skin over fat. Glad that you did not have much issues with that.

#update - Doing well here! I did not weight myself since my last weigh in, but I have lived actively and healthily, so I think that will lead to good results. I concluded that I really don't care about my weight loss rate... as long as it's going down it's good.

I have some loose skin after 145 pounds but not a lot actually. Considering I have been heavy my whole life and the amount I lost- I thought I would have a lot more. My stomach is probably the worst but it is not hanging down or anything like that. Maybe I am just lucky. I know to begin with it was bad but over the past couple of years it seems to have tightened up.

I am like you though, in that I would way rather have the loose skin that that fat. Weight training will help. It won't stop the loose skin but the muscles are fuller so the skin doesn't hang down. Stretch marks if you have those will fade too.

cowboy48 - a tremendous achievement, double what I am going for. So happy that the skin thing is not too bad, and that it seems to be tightening. If I decide to go back to my college weight of 64Kg I will probably get some.

A study needs to be done to correlate; start weight, gender, height and age, so that people can enter the numbers and know what to expect with loose skin.

@cowboy48 - wow, that is a lot of weight loss! Well done, and great to hear that loose skin is not such a big issue for you!

@Dave Welch - such a study would be interesting, although I think it would be quite complicated as well, because a lot of factors are involved.

#update - I weighed 93.4 kg this morning, another record low since starting to lose weight a few months ago (previous record was 93.7 kg). So, I have lost almost 5 kg since I started losing weight this year, and I am 13 kg from my highest weight ever (a few years ago). The next milestone of 92.5 kg is starting to get close now. By the way, my lowest weight in the last 8 years or so is about 85 kg, which also doesn't seem that far away anymore.

I am going to move to another diary... I will do it a bit different now. If you're reading this, thanks for all your support so far, and I hope to see you in my new thread!

I was ill for about a week, lost a lot of strenght :( and muscle. Im sadddd. But I will try to push myself more now I have to catch up :)
