I think I'm ready now!

Hi all! I really need to get healthy and I was browsing the internet for inspiration when I found this place. Yay!

I am 39 years old and as of this morning I weigh 196.5. This is the heaviest I've ever been and its really taking a toll on me physically and mentally. I maintained a weight of 156 for most of my adult life and then two years ago a quit smoking. I gained 15 lbs. Six months later I started smoking again but didn't drop the weight. I quit smoking again Oct 2010. I've gained an additonal 25lbs! Holy cow. I need to get this under control! I want to stay motivated and I see a lot of excitement in this community so here goes.......

AI'm 5'6" and I can carry 155 pretty well but would love to be 145. I have desk job and get no exercise during the day and while I pay for a gym membership I can't get motivated to go. I'm at a point where I'm embarrassed to see my friends and it's getting worse so it's time to get my act together! It's been time.I'm looking forward to feeling good again.

Losing weight is simple (in theory anyway)...EAT LESS, MOVE MORE...so simple, yet not at all :newangel:

I was in the same boat with the gym membership thing about 20yrs ago...I paid monthly for about a year and was gung-ho the first few months. I had a workout buddy and we met there three times a week and work out for about 2hrs, get a good sweat going and be a little shaky when we left...then out schedules started to have conflicts and we both lost interest...I tried a few times to go alone, but lifting weight just to lift weight got kinda borring...back then I was already in decent shape and was there to bulk up, now I have bulk but not the kind I want .

If you are having trouble motivating yourself, maybe a gym membership isn't for you. You need to find an activity that you enjoy, then it won't feel like another task or chore that you need to get done that day. You will actually look forward to it. Of course that is easier said than done. The gym is the trendy thing to do, and that is part of what makes it hard to go. Showing up when you are less than fit already can make you feel like you are being judged (and you might be :)), so that is another part of it that will deter you from using your membership.

You didn't mention if you were married, have kids...but for me, I enjoy getting out with my daughter and going for a bike ride or walking the dog (although walking the dog isn't brisk enough, he stops to sniff or pee on everything). My wife joined me on a dog walk a couple of times, but decided that I was going too far for her (since he stops so often, I walk him for about an hour to make up for the relaxed walking pace). So the dog walking is for me only, which would be the case in the winter anyway...wifey won't go outside in the winter unless it is to get into the car...

One thing you will need to do is figure out some meals and healthy snacks for you that will replace your current food. I don't like to use the word "diet" too often since the meaning of the word had been bastardized in our culture. Most people view a diet is a temporary sacrifice to get to a goal weight, then return to their previous eating habbits...wonder why they gain the weight back? Anyway, it has to be a total lifestyle change or you will not be able to maintain your goal weight. Don't expect to loose 40lbs in six to eight weeks and expect to maintain it...you will be depriving your body and you will have huge cravings due to the lack of nutrients...the more effective way to loose weight is gradual loss. One to two pounds per week makes it easier...

I don't know how much weight you are hoping to lose, but I have lost 20lbs so far since September and I am hoping to lose another 60lbs by next November, so 5lbs per month...My goal is to get down to between 190 and 200lbs in a year. Being 5'11 (or 180cm), 190-200lbs is still considered over weight, but I'll worry about that when I get there...that is still a big accomplishment for me, since I haven't weighed that since I was 20.

Good Luck!!

Thanks Madjak! Sounds like you're doing great! I am married and have a daughter. My daughter is away at college and my husband is a big part of my weight problem. He loves me just the way I am! That's a problem! He encourages me to eat dessert and have a drink with him on Fridays and all of the other things that are bad! One of our favorite things is cooking extravagant meals and paring wine and beer. Our daughter is studying culinary arts. Our favorite hobby is food. I am trying to limit myself to one great meal on Saturdays. Its helping. I prepare dinner for his family on Wednesdays and I want it to be wonderful for them so I'm trying to make theirs and substitute lighter options for myself while still feeling included. Trying to find fun ways to exercise is tough as well. I live in the midwest and its dark and super cold when I get off work. The gym is pretty much my only option nine months of the year. Summer is great and we enjoy getting out and doing things but the winter is just too cold. I do enjoy yoga and I have a Wii that I like to play with but even that gets boring by yourself. I did pay a personal trainer a few years ago and I really enjoyed that. I may have to go that route again. In the meantime I just need to put my fork down!

Eating less DOES NOT mean you'll lose weight. You should eat until you are full. If you eat less there is only one thing that will happen.. you will snack. It happens to everyone and I've seen it 100's of times. The trick is eating the right foods. You can eat as much as you want of the right food. Here's a list that might help...

# 1 Skinless, Boneless Chicken Breast

Mustard-Herb-Chicken-Breasts.jpg

This is definitely top of the list, nutritionally an 8oz chicken breast only has 220 calories and less than 2 grams of fat and carbohydrates whilst packing a massive 48 grams of extremely high quality protein. A great thing about chicken breast is that its easy to cook and it literally goes with anything; you can use it in a stir fry, curry, biriyani and it tastes great on its own with a bit of seasoning for flavour. It is also very cheap too, all of this makes chicken breast number 1 on the list.

# 2 Chilli Con Carne

chili_con_carne_z.jpg

Chilli con carne is a fantastic food that is great for fat loss. It is an all in one meal that includes all 3 fat loss super foods – protein (minced beef) legumes (red kidney beans) and vegetables (chopped tomatoes, onion, peppers) Another great thing about chilli con carne is you can make a big batch and keep it in the fridge to eat the next day, I generally use 400g of minced beef when I have chilli con carne and it generally lasts me 4 – 5 meals which is great because it means less cooking and less cleaning up after.

# 3 Salmon

Salmon-Succotash-300x300.jpg

The reason I like salmon is because it gives a nice change instead of chicken and the texture of salmon changes with how you cook it, whether you cook it in the oven or fry it in a frying pan for example. It’s also great to have fish in your diet for health purposes – fish is rich in omega?3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins and minerals which helps your resistance to disease and your energy and well?being in the long?term.

# 4 Lean Steak

flank-steak-300x300.jpg

While the best fat loss protein is chicken, steak is a very close second. Again like salmon its great to use as a alternative to chicken once or twice a week to spice things up a bit. I eat steak on occasion and use it more as a treat because of the higher fat content compared to chicken and fish, a lean 8oz steak has about 12 grams of fat where chicken breast only has about 2 grams, it also more expensive than chicken so I usually buy it when I see a good deal in the supermarket or as mid week treat half way to cheat day. Overall a fantastic source of protein to change it up with chicken breast.

# 5 Broccoli

Steamed broccoli is a fantastic food for fat loss as whole or part of the vegetable section of a fat loss meal. A 12†stalk of broccoli contains 9 grams of fibre which helps keep you full for longer so you don’t feel the need to binge and it also contain 7 grams of protein! The best way to cook broccoli is by steaming rather than boiling; this will retain more of the vitamins and minerals and it helps give it a crispier taste. When ever I eat mixed vegetables with a meal I always make sure to use cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower.

# 6 Eggs

Eggs are a fantastic fat loss food that allows you to make so many different variations on meals. I change between poached and scrambled eggs mainly but you can also fry or hard boil them. Experiment with adding your favourite vegetables, meats, and seasoning into your scrambled egg to add more taste and flavour. There is a big debate in the weight loss / fitness world about whether to use egg yolks or not. Personally I use egg yolks with all my egg meals and I still lose weight and body fat. Check out I often have 2 poached eggs, 2 rashers of turkey bacon and 2 organic sausages for breakfast. A perfect high protein fat loss breakfast to supercharge your metabolism for the day.

# 7 Green Tea

green-tea.jpg

Incorporating green tea extracts in your diet can give you an extra helping hand in weight loss. Researchers have discovered that drinking a cup of green tea daily will boost your metabolism from 8 to 14 percent, that’s why they highly recommend it to those who are looking for a quick method to lose fat. The more polyphenols in the tea’s ingredients, the better its fat-burning effects and benefits will be. Green tea is a rich source of this particular antioxidant, and it is considered as one of the best weight loss alternatives available in the market. So next time your sitting down watching TV in stead of having tea with milk and sugar have some green tea instead. You’ll be glad you did when you weigh yourself the next morning.

There’s plenty of other foods out there you can eat as well but these are the main ones I eat :)

right on the money ryan all you have to do is eat clean food and when your body has flushed out most of the toxins then you will start to burn fat fast.

I agree with Ryan to a point...you still have to eat in moderation...but you are dead on with limiting your calories alone, you will eventually "cheat" and gorge on something that you will regret. I was told this one...Breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dinner like a pauper...and I would have a light snack in between meals as well to curb the urge to over eat...

Good Luck
