I still feel fat

Well in 10th grade (2007) or so I reached my max of around 200lbs. I then went on a diet over that summer and dropped down to 170lbs. Then this spring I went from 170 to 140lbs. 140lbs is what I'm currently at and I feel like I'm still fat. I'll post some pics and see if you guys think I have excess fat, or if more weight exercises will tighten up my body.

Can't offer you too much help but I can commiserate, i look a lot like you do from the neck down! That is indeed one of the worst things about weight loss - even though you've clearly lost a lot of weight, you're probably much more self-conscious than you ever were as your bigger self. I think where you finish depends on what you're going for, increased health or better looks or both. I mean, if you still felt like losing more you could but I doubt you'd need to lose very much more. I might do a bodyfat percentage test, just do the home one (with a cloth tape, search Google) to get a rough idea of where you're at....I say that because when I first saw you, I thought "At MOST, he would only want to lose like 15-20 more lbs." and yet, 120 would be pretty damn low for a male to weigh. So you might make sure that you've been losing more fat than muscle. So that would be my best advice, my doctor told me directly "Do not lose any more weight", so I'm kind of useless, as far as giving advice to someone in my position who's still losing.

yea, weight loss is hard, even after its over...maybe if you don't like how you look, you could concentrate on building muscle tone??

Thanks you 2 for the advice. I've been trying to build muscle but my one arm feels alot stronger than my other. Is that normal?

I feel like I'm still fat.

I invite you to consider what you believe "fit" feels like. I certainly don't look at your photos and see an overweight individual. Fat is not a feeling (even though lots of people think they "feel fat"), but underneath that "fat feeling" is a real emotion (probably anger, sadness or frustration), if you can find that feeling, you can locate the thought that's causing you to "feel fat". When you locate the thought, you can question it and decide whether it serves you or hurts you. I bring this up b/c most people know whether they are at their healthy weight without needing to verify outside themselves - tell me where I'm wrong, but I suspect you have an image in your head of what you think you *should* look like and it's not matching up with what you see in the mirror. If this is the case, I'd like to hear you say more about the image you are striving for, the image you see in the mirror and what thoughts that bring up for you.

dude... You're at your peak of Testosterone! Time to start eating some meat and picking up HEAVY stuff. You're still in high school to boot! Free training! Join Wrestling, or at the very least football. Trust me... if you don't there will be a point in your life where you will regret it. let me know if ya got any questions. I wish somone would have guided me when i was your age.

Hello T3

I think you look absolutely fab and should have a mountain of pride inside you for what you have achieved. I like what others have written too, especially Emiko. A lot is down to the 'inner us' and whats going on in our heads too.

You need to take a long hard look at your before and after pictures and really ask yourself what you think you have achieved. You can now start to tweak things (ie with the muscle building etc) and just play around with a few ideas.

Like others have said, I wish I had your insight and capability at your age as it may well have stopped much of the yo yo dieting. Stay focused and keep an eye on the scales without obsessing over the odd few pounds. There is always room for a bit of change but that doesn't necessarily mean more weight loss. Good luck.

Thanks again everyone. I just joined this Forum last night and I've received nothing but good opinions from everyone. RJ, I just graduated from High School, but that won't stop me from cranking out the weights at the local YMCA :D. Thanks again everyone.

To me you dont look fat....I think some toning up could be done but for the record your are not fat....at least to me you are not

Oh man you are so young you are not even filling out yet. And I mean filling out in a good way...if you eat healthy and exercise a lot over the next four years. Once you've gone four years chances are you will go many more. Start doing some physical activities you are either good at or have always wanted to try. Also, like RJ said, get into the weight lifting. You should put on a lot of muscle over the next few years and look a lot different. You look too thin to me, not fat at all.

Oh and stay away from the guys on steroids. You don't need to be tempted into doing that crap.

Dang man I am very happy you reached your goal! Lift weights and drink whey protein shakes. It does wonders hehe. Or just lift both will work with time.

Well I managed to lose a little bit more weight. I'm now at 126lbs, but I really don't feel that skinny.

May I ask how tall you are? 126lbs actually sounds a bit light for a boy who's just graduated high school! Have you had any luck with the weight lifting?

You said in your original post that you were 140lbs, and I thought you already looked great then! Especially considering you started at 200lbs--that's an amazing achievement.

I agree with what Emiko said before. "Feeling fat" or "not feeling skinny" is definitely an emotional/mental issue as opposed to a physical one. Rather than losing more weight in hopes that the "fat feeling" will go away (because you are definitely not fat!), maybe you ought to take a step back and start asking yourself what's really causing you to feel this way.

Good luck! :)

What everyone else has said. Lift heavy things. Lift them lots. You will fill out in no time because of age and hormones. You are not fat at all.

I'm 5' 11" around there. I tried the lifting, but it's very imtimidating having these bulk guys just kinda looking at me when I'm doing my "small" weights. I just feel like everyone is staring at me and kinda laughing at me in their heads.

Most are looking at you thinking good kid and happy to see you there. You would be surprised if you try talking to one of them how they can help you learn to lift. I know one of the big guys at a local gym here helped teach me how to do squats and when I started I could barely do the bar.

In most weight lifting circles you compete against yourself for personal bests and all accomplishments are cheered. If they are looking at you funny it maybe you are not doing the lift right. Try asking for help it it is a good way to meet new friends and gain confidence from appearance and social skills.

Fat is not a feeling

It can be a physical feeling. For example, the first thing that I noticed years ago when I went from being trim to gaining weight was the uncomfortable feeling when the arm lays flat against the side of the body. This is because of the fat buildup at the sides of the chest, directly below the underarms. To me, this is a physically uncomfortable feeling and it constantly annoyed me.

I still had this feeling 15 lbs ago, but now it has finally started to disappear because of fat loss from that specific area (caused by overall fat loss across the entire body). I am still about 10kg / 20lbs overweight, but I don't feel so fat now due to the loss of a lot of fat at the sides of the chest.

I started at 238 lbs, currently at 195 lbs, and have the goal of 175 lbs (which is what I was years ago when I was in good, but not super, physical condition). 5' 9" male...
