Hey everyone. I am so sick of being picked on. I'm 23 yrs old and at my job its like high school, im very quiet and weak and I want to gain more confidence so people will stop being mean to me. I belong to a gym and im 5'3and 60kgs so not really over weight.

Does anyone have any sugestions on what might be helpful to me. I mean i dont wanna go around looking for fights but if one comes my way I wanna be able to stand up for myself.

I was thinking of training in prehaps muai thai (kick boxing) or perhaps tae kwo do. I dunno pretty confused. xoxo

so at work you want to start going chuck norris on people and kicking ass - you won't stay employed too long.

Work on your confidence... people will do to you what you allow them to do...

What are your good qualities? what would people who like you say about you?

Why do you have so little confidence in yourself? Why do you allow yourself to be picked on? What type of picking on is going on and if it's that bad -why not report it to human resources -the employer could be setting themselves up for a nice lawsuit if they don't take action on your behalf

Standing up for yourself involves standing up straight - shoulders back -and believing in yourself...

I dont wanna start fights with people but i feel like if i stand up for myself then they might take it the wrong way and try and get physcial?

Im a very quiet shy person so ppl tend to just walk all over me. Its not just this reason I wanna learn. Its got self defence in any situation.

I've heard a lot of people say that karate teaches both confidence and discipline so you might want to take some classes...

Having people walk all over you is someting only you can stop - and that's really gotta come from within you - not your ability to kick someone's ass..

Why do you let people walk all over you? Saying No to people isn't the end ofthe world...

Tae kwo do is a joke. If you want to impress people by doing spinning kicks and breaking boards then by all means waste your money. If you would like to seriously learn to defend yourself then I would go with the Mui Thai. I have boxed for about 13 years and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about 3.

While it is very seldom in a responsible adults life that an actual physical altercation will occur, it is my oppinion (and this will sound macho and silly to all the ladies I'm sure) knowing that you have the knowledge and ability to pretty much knock out a large percentage of the population can give you a much better self image and can be a huge confidence builder. I can't imagine a situation where a would be in a fight at work but I do believe that my training does help me to stand up for my self on work related things.

I think in a way men use physical prowess a lot like women use sex. Your not really going to sleep with the guy in shipping just because he gets your shipment out on time like you asked him. But it is possible.

When I started taking kick boxing classes a few months ago I suddenly had this self confidence that I wasn't really seeking.... it just appeared. I felt better able to take care of myself, I had reflexes for the first time, I felt more confident for really no reason that I can see. So take some martial arts classes, hit the gym for some visible muscles and even when you're shaking in your boots, never let anyone else know.

Enroll yourself in a Muay Thai class, and if you really feel the need to protect yourself go and get some Krav Maga. If you do Krav, you will literally be able to kill someone with your bare hands if you were in a life threatening situation.

I don't think Tae Kwon Do is a joke, and it has come in quite handy for myself. I've been able to knock a few guys down when necessary. However, like Mal said, the martial arts teach disipline and give you confidence, which may eventually be projected and people will notice.

I took TKD for excersise, not to fight, I think that is the wrong mindset to have.

Thanks guys u pretty much confirmed my thoughts on going with Muay Thai.

Everyone I speak to is like why do u wanna go and get punched and kicked for fun but i dont think I wanna fight in competitions or anything (unless I get really good and love it) I just wanna do the training so I can get that self confidence and know that I can (although hopefully it would neva come up) kick someones ass if need be.

I go to the gym and do cardio as well as weights on upper and lower body to start to gain some muscle as I havent worked out in a while so my next questions is:

Q - Should I wait till I have more fitness and strengh from weight training before I start the actual Muay Thai training or do you think I would benefit from starting that training now to. Thanks guys xoxo

Depending on where you go some of the classes don't include sparring. I take a muai thai style KB class but we only punch/kick bags and there are classes that do the same but add sparring. Personally though I wouldn't wait. Muai Thai is some of the best cardio you can do (in my opinion, granted) and you'll get stronger as you go. And I wouldn't worry about looking like the weak guy... first couple a weeks everyone will know you're new and aren't going to look down at you because you aren't knocking heads quite yet... and if you do get picked on, well pull a Fresh Prince and get outta there because you want your workout environment to be positive, not stressful.

I second the vote for Krav Maga if you have a studio near you. AWESOME workout, plus you actually learn fighting. Muay Thai is probably great too, I've just never taken any classes. A lot of other "traditional" martial arts (karate, tae kwon do, etc) aren't going to teach you how to handle yourself in a street fight as well. But most likely that isn't going to happen anyway...

As has already been established, Muay Thai is where its at if you want to actually learn how to fight. If you have an MMA school near you, sometimes they offer a combination of Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu, which will be an awesome workout for you.

No. If you want to do it, do it now.

Hope I didn't offend. Joke is probably an overstatement. All I really meant is that my experience after 15 years of training an being around combat sports is that in an actual combat application is not the most effective. To put it in fitness terms, any workout is better than none but if your objective is to defend yourself and others in real world applications boxing, mui thai, and jui jitsu would be better choices. As for Krav Maga. I am not sure what they are teaching in the krav maga classes in gyms but if it is anything like the real deal, I would avoid it unless you would like to serve some serious jail time. It is more of a philosophy that a distinct fighting style. They borrow the most effective and debilitating techniques from other styles and teach them to be used in "no-quarter" situations. Eye gouges, throat strikes, spinal attacks. Things like that. Since the basis for learning and practicing martial arts is making techniques intuitive and auto-responsive, I would be a little uneasy spending a lot of time practicing a technique that could kill or disable someone..

personally I would look into JKD (Jeet Kune Do)

It may be hard to find a school depending on where you live.. but it incorporates the best from all the styles... including muy thai. As for your situation, I think its more of a confidence thing and as others have said, learning an art helps build your confidence. People can really sense that and act accordingly. (Not to knock Muy Thai, because I think its an effective art, but to be really proficient at it you have to in a sense hurt yourself (deaden the nerves in your arms and shins) which some people have issues later in life due to it.

Possible Training

I understand how you feel. It sucks when you just want to do your job and get on with your day. Unfortunately other people do not have respect for those wishes. It is apparent that confidence is lacking and some people can spot that a mile away.(bullies)

As mentioned above all are great studies to get involved in. If you mostly are in tight quarters you might want to think about Aikido. Not a lot of punching or kicks to learn but mostly joint pressure and submission holds. Plus if it has to take place in a work environment. It can be made to look like you were just helping a co-worker up from a slip or fall.

You don't always have room to work out a problem. Close quarter combat training might be what you need. It is your decision of how you want to proceed. You don't want to take too long to make a decision.

Probably sure you don't want to be labeled as a "tattletale" but you may want to inform management of certain shenanigans from co-workers. And that it makes for an uncomfortable work environment. Most likely they can ease the pressure on their end.

But by all means continue your quest to learn self defense.

Ok now I dont understand what ur saying about 'hurting' urself. I think at this stage I just wanna do the training and some light sparring. Are u refering to if u get into competitive fighting?

I believe he is referring to "shin conditioning". Since muay thai uses a lot of leg kicks that incorporate the shin, a lot of practitioners focus on conditioning that area of the leg to be able to take extra punishment. Old school way was kicking trees (see Van Dam in Kickboxer)but most people just do high reps on heavy bag.
Any style you choose that uses punches and.or kicks will have a certain amount of this, muay thai just takes it a little farther and since shins are not used to contact it takes a little more work to build them up. Boxing will do the same to your hands.
If you like muay thai look into it. I wouldnt worry about hurting yourself.

I think Mui thai is really good. But if you join Karate classes that is not bad too. Both things will teach you how to defense yourself and build your self confidence.

So, what r u waiting for?Go and join any of 'em . And share your experiences with us.
