I need some guidance to get myself started

Hello,

As I mentioned in my intro, I am new and am looking for some advice of what I should do. Basically I am at a size 14 now when I used to be a size 10.
Im upset because alot of my clothes don't fit anymore and I want to go back to my old self.
I don't know where to start. I'm going to get myself weighed tomorrow. For the last 5 months I have been walking to and from work. (About 2.5 miles round trip)
I try to make as many dinners from scratch, but we do have the occasional lazy burger and chips or a take away. Ive cut back on snacking the past few weeks and find this so hard to get through a job I no longer enjoy without wanting chocolate. :drool5:
I have a cross trainer at home but in all honesty this hasnt had any use in well over a year.

So guys I need some advice to get my self started... point me in the right direction please.

Thanks in advance

Hey there.

My best advice to you would be to start really looking at what you're eating every day. Start for a week by keeping a food diary. Write down EVERYTHING you eat. And I mean everything: If you take a bite of a cookie, note it down. If you lick the spoon while you cook, write it down. If you lick your fingers when you make a sandwich, write it down.

Most people have no idea what they're actually eating throughout the day. I can't count the number of times someone has told me "I eat really healthy" and then, as they start to really pay attention to what they eat, they're not remembering a whole bunch of stuff.

I'd start there ... and maybe post here what you eat on an average day. There are a lot of us here who can look at your diet and give you some suggestions on what to change or cut back on to help your weight loss efforts.

As you describe it, you want to lose weight. I'll make some suggestions on that part, but there's something way more important to discuss first. From your note, it's clear that you eat to change your feelings. Don't feel bad. Most overweight people do. I did seven years ago when I was seventy pounds heavier than I am now. I was also an active alcoholic and a nicotine addict. While there are surface differences between alcohol, nicotine, and gluttony, the underlying principles are exactly the same. We do all that to change our feelings and satisfy an addiction. (Yes, as an addict myself, I can tell you that food is an addiction.)

In order to quit drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and lose weight and maintain the weight loss, I had to change the way I reacted to life. Until I did that, there was absolutely no dieting strategy that would work for any length of time. Eventually I would feel bad and want to feel better and I would eat a pint of ice cream or a loaf of french bread, covered with butter, to accomplish that. There are tools you can use to change the way you react to life. I have a website that describes them, and sells absolutely nothing and does not want your soul. I'm a semi-retired high school counselor who has a life-long interest in being a helper. That's all. Here's the link: The site also has my rules for weight loss and exercise. Hope it helps.

While I was changing the way I reacted to life, I learned that there is no doubt that shedding fat is all about how many calories we consume and how many we expend. There are folks who want to talk about all sorts of other things, but my experience has left me with no doubt about that. It's not theory for me. When I reduced the calories I was eating and started exercising significantly (i.e. hard exercise), I lost weight. When I wanted to add a little weight back, I added calories and there it was. When I increased exercise intensity, the weight fell off. There is no easy alternative to this, but it works. If you're not losing weight, you're not working hard enough at exercise, or you're consuming too much crap.

While calories are the main thing, what we eat makes a huge difference as well. I eat no refined carbs, very little red meat, a little white meat, and a lot of fruits and vegetables. I have eggs two mornings a week. The rest of the time it's whole grain cereals carefully measured for calorie control. Stuff like that. It has worked for years. It's not theory for me.

Good luck in your quest. But remember, "wanting to" does no good whatsoever. You have to have "willingness." You have to be willing to make some hard changes. The good thing is that after working through the initial pain of change, things get so very much better. It's not quick, but if done right it's permanent.
