Hi,

So currently i weigh 13 stone exactly (182 lb) and im 5ft 10. Im losing weight ok, i can lose 2lb a week without really trying, but thats not the problem. The problem is cardio exercise. Ive started the "couch to 5k" program and on the first 2 weeks of that you are supposed to:

Do a 5 minute brisk walk warm up
Jog for 1 minute
Brisk walk for 90 seconds
Jog for 1 minute
Brisk walk for 90 seconds

And repeat until you have jogged/walked 20 minutes worth.
My problem is i can only do that for about 10 minutes tops, before my legs start to ache because they are getting tired and i get out of breath so i dont go any further because you shouldnt go over your limit.
So how am i supposed to get fit if i cant handle the first week? On the plan itself it says "dont be kean to skip the first weeks and get onto the harder stuff", well i dont want to because the first week IS the hard stuff for me. So what should i do? I did do a lot of cycling since i started this diet and my endurance hasnt gone up that much, most of which is probably just because im over a stone lighter now, not really because im getting fit, because i dont feel like i am. My breathing increases even when i reach the top of the stairs!
I dont get it really, am i missing something vitally important in my diet which helps you stay fit? Because im getting worried!

Please reply.

Do some self modification. Try 30 min jog , 1 min walk first. Then repeat again till u can't go further. This really builds endurance. I done it and it's super awesome. U shd be able to increase to 1 min jog by 2nd or 3rd week. Enjoy this journey!:D

Jog for 30 minutes with 1 minute walking?

yep....u using treadmill?
u can either
1)adjust the speed lower then go higher up
2)30 sec jog then walk 90 min

I did 2 min jog 2 min rest. The point is to find the pace u r comfortable at then work yr way up. Try out n see wat works for u.;)

No im not using treadmill. And i could never jog for 30 mins, i dont know why im so unfit. Im not even REALLY overweight, about a stone/stone and a half tops. But i have the endurance of a 20 stoner lol.

hey E,

you can totally do this! i would suggest modifying it for yourself, which is i think what pinky was trying to tell you. instead of a minute of jogging, start out with 30 second/90 second intervals for 20 minutes. maybe do that for a week, then the following week do 30 second/60 second intervals. or, 30 sec/60 sec/30 sec/90 sec. just gradually tailor the plan to the week one that they have listed.

i totally agree that the 60/90 is tough! i don't think the C25K is actually 'couch' level. it's a great premise, but i definitely have trouble with the first two weeks as well simply because i'm not in fantastic shape. i think that there's definitely a baseline fitness level that they assume in the plan.

but you can definitely do this! and maybe it will take you a little longer than they have written down, but in the end you're still attaining a goal of 5k! and just think. . . .when you finish the plan, you will definitely be able to run for 30 minutes straight! (i know, weird concept for me too!! ;))

Lol well im glad to see its not me being completely bad at jogging. I'll try 30 seconds jogging and 90 walking, to try and stretch my energy to last the 20 minutes. Thanks for the help.

This worked for me reallyreally well! I still do it pretty often and it gets me working very hard. I also like to count in rhythm so it gives me something to keep my mind on. *smile* Good luck!

I just tried that and managed the 20 minutes. Then afterwards did 20 minutes on my workout program, then after that drank a lot of water. I cant see how doing this 3 times a week can still keep me in a plateau, can it?

Howdy E! Good to see you still working so hard!! You can totally do this - it's just a matter of making adjustments for yourself then working up to the program's levels. Hang in there & let us know how it's going!! :D:D:D:D
