I need help incorporating HIIT into my workout, and a few questions.

Background:

I am a 6'3" 245lb 19 year old male trying to lose weight. Sorry if this topic has been done to death.

Currently, on MWF I go to the gym. First, I do weight training for my whole body. Then I do the eliptical (with heart rate between 145-165) for 30 minutes followed by another cardio activity for ten minutes, like the stair machine. Then I'm done and have a protein shake after I drive home. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I do a workout DVD like Taebo.

I am considering incorporating HIIT because of it's benefits in helping me lose weight. I want to do HIIT via eliptical.

I've done a little reading about doing HIIT on an eliptical and can't decide whether to do the HIIT in 30 sec sprint/ 1 minute jogging or 1 min sprint/ 2 minutes jogging (and it's easy to know when to change by just looking at the time on the eliptical...that's why I like those numbers)... and in strides per minute would that be 190-200SPM for sprinting and then around 150SPM for jogging? I think I should: warm up for 5 min., HIIT for 20 min., and then a 5 min. cooldown.

I am thinking on using this HIIT plan instead of doing the cardio. Does that mean replacing the steady cardio with the eliptical or both the elitical and 10 minutes of cardio with a stair machine?

That would mean that I would be doing HIIT MWF... which is 3 times a week. How often should I be doing HIIT a week? Is doing this on MWF good?

I also mentioned earlier that I begin by doing weight training for around 30 minutes for my whole body on MWF. Does the weight training and the benefits of HIIT negate each other?

I also drink a protein shake after I finish and don't know how that affects HIIT.

I am also thinking of spreading my weight lifting from doing my whole body on MWF to doing my arms and abs on MWF and doing legs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. What do you think?

In the end, I think i'm going to be doing weight training with arms and abs, and then HIIT on MWF and doing weight training with my legs on tuesdays and thursdays... and don't know if it would be bad to do just steady cardio on the eliptical for around 30 min? (Since I'm already at the gym to do weight training with my legs, why not replace the workout DVDs with running on the eliptical for around 30 min.) Well, I do have another question. That leaves me with the weekend as a break. I don't know if I should just take a break, or do a workout DVD each of those days. I am thinking of getting the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred because it's only like 20 or 30 minutes, whereas my other DVDs like taebo last longer. Or maybe I should just skip workout DVDs all together and do the exercise ball on the weekends. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Based on everything I have read and have been told here, when doing HIIT, you should really never do more than 2-3 sessions per week because it is so taxing on your body specifically your CNS, and you should give yourself the time to do the sprint (with an ALL out sprint as fast as you can go), and then walk to recover before sprinting again. Also, HIIT should be like 20-30 mins max per session. So I'm not sure if you want this to be your only cardio sessions per week.

Have you ever done HIIT before on elliptical or On anything else? I did it last year on the treadmill, and was running 12mph and then walking at 2.5 to recover. It is extremely draining.

HIIT helps boost fat loss, but so does other lower state cardio. So I'm pretty sure if you are trying to boost fat loss while losing weight, and lifting, the 2 won't cancel the other out.

I'm no expert, and hopefully if anything I've said is wrong someone will correct it, but I'm pretty sure it's right.
