I need a hot bod in 1 month - my DH is coming home! YAY!

Hey guys -

My hubby is coming home from Iraq for R&R in one month and I am not even close to where I want/need to be.

I've been eating a clean diet and exercising now for 4 months.

The results? A toner body - but no weight loss, no fat loss.

Uhm - I'm walking/jogging about 40 minutes 2 - 3 times a week.
I do regular exercises without any equipment other than a stretchy band. My muscles are getting firm, so I think I'm okay in that department.

My diet is mostly clean. I've had a few "falling off the wagon" days with family BBQ's, etc - but nothing drastic.

But I've gained 5 pounds in all these 4 months and lost no weight! I haven't changed clothing size. Nada.

Help me please!! I want to be slim and trim when my hubby sees me again after all this time!

What am I doing wrong? Why isn't the weight coming off?

Shel

One thing I forgot to mention - I'm taking Melatonin to help me sleep. The last year has been difficult and the Melatonin allows me to get a half-way decent night's sleep. You guys think that could have anything to do with it?

Thanks guys!!!!
Shel

Definatly take a look into your diet as you can't be eating the right amount of calories etc if you haven't lost in 4 months. you should have droped like around 30 pounds by now. Try to stay away from the bbq's and all that other then like once a week. Ive found this site to give a fairly accurate daily calorie amount to lose weight, Put in your info and look under results, Go for extreme weight loss.

:edit: forgot to put in the site lol

Thanks Nick. I checked that site and in order to do the extreme weight loss - I need to consume no more than 1358 calories per day.

I went and reopened my FitDay account and input all that I ate and did yesterday to see how far off I was.   I am way overeating - even though I'm eating clean.

I truly didn't think all that stuff had that many calories in it. I thought good stuff was good stuff - even if it was vegetables/fruit/etc...

So, I guess for me, it's going to be about portion control. *sigh*

I'm freaking out though because I like eating! I'm not overweight per se, and most people think I look fairly skinny, but that's only because I had a tendency to distribute my weight evenly. Thank God.

But at 5'4" and 155 - I'm not happy.

So, okay - how do you force yourself to do portion control? I've never had to do this before and I don't know how to curb myself from grabbing a bite here and there?

Thanks!
shel

yep, i'd say drop your calories down to around 1,300 a day. keep a log of what you eat and how much. how do you exercise portion control? you just have to do it, think of the end results you want. most people fail at losing weight, so you have to really want to do it - to succeed where others fail. eventually you'll get used to eating less, it takes time though.

The results? A toner body - but no weight loss, no fat loss.
If you're gaining tone, one of two things HAVE to be happening:
1. You've lost fat
2. You're putting on weight

Because tone comes from increased muscle (which weighs more than fat) if you're seeing no change in your weight, then it's because you're losing enough fat to offset the weight of the additional muscle.

Okay - so I just have to "make" myself eat only 1300 calories a day?? EEk!

The day isn't over yet - and I've already eaten 60% of my allowance today. *sigh*

I will start keeping up with it though and forcing myself to control my eating.

I just wasn't keeping up with it before because I thought all those fruits and veggies were good for you!

Fil - I have actually gained 5 pounds in the last 4 months, which is the opposite of where I wanted to go. LOL Hopefully that 5 pounds is all muscle.

Uhm, what's a reasonable amount of weight loss I can expect per week on 1200 - 1300 calories each day?

And - does anyone know what I can eat to satisfy my salty/crunchy cracker/chip cravings that's low in calories?

Thanks guys!
Shel

Im not sure about each day but about 2 pounds a week, Probably not what you want to hear but it takes time. Once in a while i'll eat lays lite chips but just the potato chip ones the other ones have to much crap in them. Can also eat pringles fat free but you shouldn't eat either of these all the time and especially not at night because of all the carbs.

Also, Try not to eat stuff to high in calories. Get some natural peanut butter, Chicken breasts maybe cook a bunch of chicken and then cut it up to make a stir fry the next day. You can check this out to get some food ideas but dont follow it sense it has more calories then you need

Here's another very good article on what you should and shouldn't be eating

Here's a tip - don't make food available. Once you're done eating, go do something. Keep yourself busy. Another big one is don't eat because you're bored!

4merslacker - what have you been eating that has so many calories that your talking about? Just curious for my own reference ... you said you werent keeping up with your calories b/c u thought all these fruits and veggies were good for you ...

yeah that's good advice, it's easier to cut back on eating when you're not hanging out at your house bored and thinking about how how much you'd like something you're not supposed to have. stay busy.

on the weightloss speed, in my experience you wont notice a whole lot in the first 2 weeks, but it will start to drop off after that. if you can keep up the calorie limit you WILL lose weight.

BTW, no fast food, sugary snacks, sodas, chips, ice cream, etc. i know you said you're eating a clean diet but i wanted to mention this anyway. & keep bread to a minimum as well.

Oh man - - am I in trouble!! I work from home!!! :D :D :D So, I have a tendency to snack all day long. I thought that because I was snacking on fruits and veggies, I was fine.

Kb - You asked what I was eating. Well, basically good foods. Raw veggies and fruits, nuts, etc. What killed it for me was overeating. For example I was eating a TON of cherries - literally about 3 cups a day.  Mind you, this was throughout the whole day... And, I thought I was being smart and bought some Veggie Stix chips and I was eating about 3 - 5 oz of them a day. Ohhh, and I love pumpkin seeds. Try about a cup a day of those! :D Uhm - not good!

So, I have to learn portion control.

I've done pretty good today (using the FitDay.com website) and I'm up to 910 calories today so far - including supper which I haven't eaten yet. And I'm drinking more water than normal to help me get that full feeling.

It's hard sitting here at the house and having nothing on my desk though! I'm used to having something handy to snack on all day long...

Nick - Thanks for the tips on the Pringles and Lays. The Veggie Stix were getting to be an expensive habit anyway... :D

Shimmering - you think it'll take about 2 weeks for me to start seeing a difference? Wow! Okay - I must think positively. Right?! LOL

Portion control - I don't like that phrase at all - but I'm learning. So far!

Thank you guys! You guys are the BEST!

I know all about the count down until the return of the husband. I have picked my husband up 3 times now in our less then 4 year marriage. He deploys every 10 months for 6-7 months at a time. It seems like they will never come home and then you get to the one month left point and start freaking out! I found the best way to keep me motivated and on track was to keep a count down. I would have a calendar or something with the days I had left until he got home and each night I had to face the calender and mark whether I had eaten right and exercised that day. It may sound stupid, but knowing I had to leave that day blank if I messed up was enough to get me through. Of course you have to give yourself a day off from working out every now and then. But staying on track will be worth it when you go to pick him up.

Don't get frustrated about not losing any weight. I am in the same boat. I put my workout in high gear about a month ago and haven't lost one pound. I did drop 4% body fat though and my husband keeps saying how skinny I look and how I have lost a ton of weight. So don't take the number on the scale too seriously. I know that's hard. Just remember they always think you look better then you think you do.

Divide your daily caloric intake into 5 - 6 equally sized meals with a serving of protein at each. You will have to eat about every 3 hours in order to do this. Between that and drinking at least a gallon of water a day you won't have time to get hungry.

Thank you guys!!

It's day 3 of watching my calories (on FitDay) and I'm actually doing pretty good. I've noticed though, that I tend to eat lower than the 1300 calories recommended for extreme weight loss for me, because I'm worried that I'll overeat. So by the time 9 p.m. rolls around I'm at 900 or 1100. Is that ok??

Also, I read about the zig-zag method (Karl, I think that was you that posted it in another thread) of dieting. I think I'm going to do that, at least try it.

I usually only get on the scale once a week - but I snuck a look this morning, and I am down from 154.8 to 151.4. I know this isn't a real indication of weight loss over time, but it made me feel good seeing it. :D :D

I'm heavier than I've ever been in my life and I am determined to not live this way. Bless you guys!

Harley - Bless you and your DH too! Is your DH AirForce or Marines? The Military life is a life unlike any other, isn't it? LOL Good luck on hitting your target too!

Shel

That's great that you have already started to see results. Don't get frustrated if the scale doesn't always go down. I know personally that I use to weigh myself first thing EVERY morning and when I didn't see a change, I would start feeling down and eventually give up. I don't weigh myself much anymore because of that.

Oh- my husband is a Navy Seabee, yeah the military life is something else to say the least! Works for us though. Good luck and enjoy your time together when he gets back.
