Hello and thankyou for reading and following my journey.

I began a journey on here about a year ago without success due to the stresses of university making diet and food choices the very last thing on my mind. However, I am proud to say I have completed my degree and graduation is only 8 weeks away! I want to be slimmer to get some nice photos and feel good about myself!

I am 20 years old and weigh a shocking 231 pounds (16 stone and 7 pounds. I need support and that's why I joint this site. Any tips or success stories are very welcome too.

Hi Jader, Good Luck for tomorrow.
I will follow you diary also. I joined today as I realised I need help, My friends tend to tell me not to worry when I eat junk, hubby doesn't mind what I eat as long as I eat. So here I am.
Good Luck again

Hey, Jader.
Here's the good news: You're young and healthy, and you CAN lose weight!
Keep a positive attitude! Make a plan, and stick to it! If you're still having trouble keep reading and find other strategies! YOU CAN DO IT!

Thank you both for your lovely and motivating messages! Well today is the beginning of the rest of my life :) . I know what you mean, my friends and family say don't worry and so does my other half but it's something I need to do for myself. Good luck guys, we CAN do this!

Thank you Amy, best of luck to you too. I don't do any exercise at all so stepping that up with walking more and going on wii and kinect. Food wise, I am just cutting down at the moment as snack unneccesarily and eat out of boredom. However, I would like to get back into this diet the doctor gave me a couple of years ago as was never hungry and lost 7 pounds in first week! What about you? :)

Sounds like a good way to start out.

Personally, I'm a calorie counter (and I try to go to the gym, although this week have been slacking), and it's working incredibly well for me (I've lost a bit over a stone in seven weeks- and I'm at the lower end of "people who need to lose weight" so I never expected big drops of weight), despite the fact that I have medical conditions/ family history that make obesity more likely for me, and the fact that I snack regularly (if I don't, I begin to feel giddy).

Wow that's amazing Amy, well done! Thank you for the advice. I had a gym/swimming membership a couple of years and loved it! Went gym and swimming daily but its so expensive :( . Iv got wii with fit board and biggest loser and just dance... also have kinect so should try and use them reli.

Thank you Sunflower :)

Any exercise is better than no exercise :) I'd work out in my place instead of the gym to save money, but I live in an apartment and I don't think the people living below me appreciate me jumping around in here. (Plus I don't have a television, let alone a Wii or a Kinect- just a radio/ CD player and a laptop- the gym is definitely a cheaper option for me) Any movement will help (even walking- although brisk walking is better for fitness).

Do you have more firm ideas on your nutrition? I'm a big advocate of at least knowing your calorie allowance and having an idea of how that's represented in your food, if not calorie counting- for years I tried to eat less and not eat any "bad" food and failed to lose weight.

Yeah exactly and I literally do no exercise at the moment so even walking most evenings should help lol.

The one the doc done for me was a limit of 1200 calories a day which I have to eat so many portions of carbs, protein, dairy etc. I have a booklet containing all the portions under each food category. Main one will be cutting out the snacking and not eating after 7/8pm (worse time for me snacking!).

Wow, that sounds really strict. I definitely agree with having a certain number of portions and getting your nutrition right, but my understanding is 1200 calories is what the smallest (shortest/ thinnest) most sedentary woman should be eating. (If your doctor's told you to do it then that's a different matter though) If you find you have trouble sticking to it though, I can help you find something more moderate (my calories are based on my current weight- and I eat/ snack whenever the hell I feel like it, as long as I make it low calorie options)- a doctor's advice is far, far better than my own (I have no medical training or experience whatsoever) but if you can't stick to their plan, a plan is better than no plan, if that makes sense. (I'm not trying to be a defeatist- for all I know you're perfectly able to stick to this sort of system- but I couldn't, hence the offer)

No not all, any advice is seriously welcome! Where do you find out best calories to have in comparison to your weight? I didnt get too hungry tbh but need snacks at times because I actually feel sick with hungry at times.

I get giddy/ weak if I don't eat often enough too, if that's what you're saying- that's one of the principal reasons I snack. If you use this tool: it'll tell you what you need to eat to maintain and lose your weight (it's a BMR calculator- your BMR is the calories your body needs to lie in bed and do nothing but run your system- heart, breathing, etc- all day), depending on how much activity you do. My understanding is you shouldn't aim to lose more than a kilogram (2.2lb) a week (you can change the number in the box).

If you have giddiness/ weakness problems due to lack of food like me, then try fruit or vegetables (check the calorie content on things you plan to eat, but almost all of them can be munched almost mindlessly on a low cal diet- bananas and avocados are two major exceptions). Fruit and veg are the absolute cornerstone to my diet- I have a gigantic appetite, and if I stuck to five a day or whatever either I'd be sick/ starving all the time or I'd blow my calories consistently out of the water. There's also absolutely no reason why you can't eat after a certain time- that's a myth. (In fact, if the evening is your danger zone, try filling up on something bulky and low cal so you stay away from the "bad food"- my favourite is light Greek yoghurt with chopped up microwaved apple and other fruit and a little cinnamon on top)

Yeh that sounds really simliar to me! I went on link (thankyou!) and it's really interesting how much your exercise affects how many calories you can have!

Welcome!
I have the same goal as you. I started at around 220lbs but that was far from my highest weight.
Definately add exercise. There is no problem with starting off slow. If you "bite off more than you can chew", it may be too much.
Looks like you are headed in the right direction cutting out unnecessary snacks.
Keep up the good work!!

Thanks Amanda, it's nice to meet people who have the same goal as you. Yeah I don't wanna push too much too earlier (especially as i have a weakened calf muscle in one leg) but just been for an hour walk and it was really enjoyable! :) Yeah, most of my snacking is out of boredom and no need for it! You say you started around 220 pounds, have you lost some so far? we CAN do this :D Bring it on!

DAY 1 (Sun 22nd May 2011)

Well that's day one nearly over! Not a bad first day at all and feeling sooo motivated at the moment. I will admit now to make my food choices be reasoned right now - I do not any fruit or veg except potatoes and however much people try and talk me into it, it won't happen - trust me my family, friends and partner have been trying all my life so please don't start - just accept it and try and help me find low calorie choices that fit into my very fussy eating lifestyle.

Breakfast: cookie crisp cereals (not fab i know) and 1% fat milk
Lunch: Fish fingers and bowl of pasta with sprinkle of cheese (strange combination but i love it! ha!)
Dinner: potato waffles and chicken dippers (as forgot to defrost the chicken oops!! :( )
NO SNACKS.

To another person this may seem bad, but trust me, when you eat 3 meals plus about 5-6 different snacks a day, this is a fab day and I'm really proud! I havent even felt hungry or tempted... success if you ask me! Also done hour walk with my friend and small amount of time on wii fit wooo!

Now it would be hypocritical of me to not say anything, given I've been harping on other people for weeks about how bad a diet is without any fruit and vegetables and how you can't possibly be getting all the nutrients you need or have anywhere near approaching something that's once seen something related to the third cousin of a healthy diet without them etc etc etc, but given that caveat I think I've given you the short version of the lecture. What I really wanted to say is that nutritionally, potato isn't a vegetable, it's a starch.

My highest (known) weight is 276lbs.
I joined SFL (2008) weighing 250lbs and got down to 175lbs.
Life happened and I made it all the way back to 230lbs (Aug. 2010), this is what I weighed in Nov. '10.
I lost 10lbs from then to Jan. and came back here weighing 220lbs.
So, it's been a real journey for me. Lots of up and downs but I'm determined to get there this time!
