I have dived in

After sitting on my ass for the last 6 years (I'm 30) I have finally decided that I need to do something about my weight.

Currently I weigh 186lbs and am 5ft. 6.

Monday morning I jogged about 2 miles (I'm sure I walked about half of those two miles) Today I jogged the same route but jogged more of the time, probably about 3/5th instead of 1/2. I was hot and sweaty and felt like it was a good start. But I know that jogging will not be enough. (but still it's better than my previous routine of sitting on the couch or at the computer. At first I thought well if I just jog three times a week and get my endurance built up to about 3 miles a session, I will at least not gain anymore weight if I don't change my diet, but now I'm not sure. I have taken some little steps in my diet such as eating a bowl of high fiber oatmeal each morning instead of an egg mcmuffin, and just putting some cocoa in my coffee instead of creamer, and only having about 2 cups of coffee with cocoa instead of like 4 cups. For lunch I just eat less (only clear about half my plate). For dinner I do the same, don't clear my plate and try to keep snacking to a minimum. But one thing I didn't change is my drinking beer. I have been drinking about 3 beers a night (probably 5 nights per week). I don't get drunk, but 3 beers is a crapload of calories, and I know it can't be good (probably the main culprit in my beer gut and weight.

So I just want advice I guess. Should I take it slow and slowly change my diet, or should I start calorie counting or a food diary? Feel free to ask questions if you need more info; I'm ready to lose this beer gut and get healthy(ier). :D

Beeeeeeeeeer! Mmmmmmm!

You don't have to give up beer (gasp!) but you do need to work those calories into your totals and when dieting the calorie/nutrition payback may not make sense. But if it makes you feel like you are not depriving yourself and you are eating well aside from the beer, there's nothing wrong with it.

I used to drink a couple of beers a night and sometimes a couple more... Now I save them for a treat. Before I drink a beer (if I'm hot and thirsty) I'll down a 16oz class of water first. Then I won't be tempted to pig down the first beer and reach for another.

I also only drink Guinness (or Beamish, when I can find it). More flavor, less calories.

Good luck with it!

Thanks! I actually won't have too much of a problem with at least cutting back on beer. If I am wasting 700 calories on beer while trying to lose weight, I will feel like an idiot cuz all my hard work jogging was overtaken by my beer calories.

Just an update: I have slacked off for the past 2 weeks. I need to gain back the energy that gave me the motivation to get off my butt and start jogging, but I have instead been lazy and said to myself "Oh, I'll jog again on Monday"...and then "I'll jog on Wednesday" Well I am going jogging again on Friday and that is that. Also on Saturday I will swim some laps at the pool because I've heard that is great excercise and hey, I love swimming! Anyway...I'll post again after my jog on Friday! Wish me luck on keeping myself motivated!
