I have a squat issue

Its embarassing but I don't have to look any of you in the face so, who cares. Anyway, I would prefer not to squat on the smith machine..but, I can't yet squat the 45-55lb bar on the squat rack if I would like to walk the next day. I also don't know if I can really hold 30-40lbs of dumbbells and do squats because its just akward. So, what would be the best thing to do? Just suck it up and use the dumbbells until I can squat the bar?

ust suck it up and use the dumbbells until I can squat the bar?

Why on earth would that be "sucking it up"? You're smarter than that...

You lift what you can lift...

This post makes me feel like i should be ashamed or something that 20lb dumbbells are all I can manage...

There's no rule that says you have to use a certain weight...

Curl bars are 25-35lbs - try using one of those if the regular bars are too heavy..

it's about progression.. you have to start somewhere -as long as you don't stay at the same weight for the next year -then who the hell cars where you start? Who are you trying to impress anyhow?

Ditto Mal.

Use DBs and worry about progressing from where you feel comfortable.

We all start somewhere. There is no shame in not being born with infinite strength.;)

DB squats are great and everyone can benefit from them. Use them proudly!

An interesting observation I made when filming videos for my website over the weekend. One of the vids was bodyweight squats and squats with DBs. I had to do a lot of reps to get the right 'takes' and really concentrated on form, obviously.

Wow, was I sore. Still am actually.... in all the right places too.

I would be "sucking it up" beccause I don't really want to use the dummbells to do it. I just find it akward. But I'm ready to add more weight...just not 45lbs. Make sense? I am NOT going to go try to do something too heavy for me. That isn't at all what I meant by sucking it up.

Try the curl bars then - they're a little shorter and don't have the starting weight...

Crap steve, stop reading my mind...

I find with positioning of the dumbbells.. makes them less awkward or unweildy If I put them by my shoulders rather than hanging at my sides, it's easier to control...

I guess it would be about my hip level to start..then obviously they go down with me. Is there a better way?

basically like this girl

I like holding them up by my shoulders better. I hold them in the neutral grip, which means palms facing each other. One head of the DB is actually resting on my shoulder.
