I don't know how to do squats...

How are you doing it?

have you watched the videos in the exercise section on how it's done?

Why do you think you're not doing it correctly?

you've said you go to the gym - ask a trainer at the gym for some advice or to watch you do it and correct your form ...

search for Mark Rippetoe on youtube. There are a lot of videos giving instruction by Mark on there. He is the authority on strength training....A coach's coach.

If you go to a gym, I believe you can get many of the same benefits from the leg press machine, maybe a little less because your sitting and not balancing your self. Steve or someone correct me if I am wrong. alot of gyms also have smith machine where the bar is on pulleys forceing you to only go straight up and down. you may see most people using this to do bench presses.

I'm a big fan of progression.
I feel you'll get a much better benefit without machines.

I would start with body weight squats concentrating on getting a full range of motion and proper form.

work your way up to sets of 20 reps and then move on to resistance.

IMO the better route for the purposes of general strength and weight loss would be free weights as opposed to machines, provided you progress slowly adhering to strict form. Reason being you'll be using additional muscles to stabilize the weight, where as if you use a machine or smith machine the equipment does it for you.
