I Can't Maintain A Diet; Help!

I weigh 346 pounds and I'm around 5'9 ft tall. I am a 20 twenty year old female and have been struggling with obesity for as long as I can remember. Last year, I tried the Gastric Balloon for around 6 months and I lost 13 lbs then gained them after it was removed. So I decided that it's best to frequently visit a doctor, which I started doing two weeks ago.

The center has its own diets, and merchandise etc. So I follow the diet for the first week, and I end up breaking it on my forth day. I lost 2.5 pounds regardless. The doctor told me I can eat as many proteins as I want so long that I don't break the diet. So this week I followed the diet till my fifth day, and I broke it, again. I have been waking up everyday thinking to myself today I won't break the diet; I follow it and everything till I mess up. I live with my family so that doesn't help at all. There's food everywhere I look and my sister always brings lunch from outside. No one is helping me maintain my diet.

I don't know what to do anymore. I need help, so I joined this forum.

What do I do?

Perhaps the diet is simply too strict for you, or too many restrictions too soon that you feel deprived and your cravings overtake your willpower? Personally, I hate the word "diet" because to me it is temporary. It means you restrict yourself of foods until you reach your desired goal, and then go back to eating how you used to (perhaps a little healthier) and then you gain the weight back because the "diet" is not sustainable.

Perhaps you could try changing your eating habits more gradually. Start by cutting or reducing your sugar and salt intake. If you drink tea or coffee, try to add a little less sugar. Try to avoid sugary drinks like pop, or at least limit yourself to much less than you drink now. Same with sweets like candies.

Also, when you slip, do not beat yourself up too much. All of us have our weak moments when we cave, sometimes it's one time a day, sometimes a whole day or week goes bad. The important thing is to get back on your feet, forgive yourself, forget it and keep going.

Does your sister and others around you know you are trying to change your eating habits and lose weight? If not, perhaps you need to sit them down and explain that you need their help and support. And even if they do know, you need to sit them down again and tell them their actions are not helping you.

If I may ask, what is the diet exactly that your doctor has put you on? And have you been advised to do any sort of exercising?

icychic pretty much nailed it with the eating habit. A really good way for you to start eating healthier without the 'overwhelming I cant eat this, I cant eat that, I can only eat this' is by gradually building discipline without realizing its a diet. If you drink a whole can of soda, drink 3/4 of it. Continue drinking 3/4 of it until you can cut it down to 1/2 etc. Your body has conditioned itself to drink less soda so you don't feel like you're forced not to drink it. One of the first small changes can be the condiments like mayonnaise, ketchup etc.
