I cannot control my eating of junk food

Hello everyone,

I am a working executive, working long hours and addicted to fast food, usually eating while I'm in the office. I seem to eat whether I'm hungry or not and have got to a stage where I am unable to control my eating habit. Unfortunately, my weight is increasing and I'm being forced to buy clothes a size larger than normal. I can devote a little time to exercise, but is there a recommended safe way to lose weight? I've heard of all these diets, such as Atkins, that don't sound very healthy at all.

You can control your diet, you obviously just haven’t wanted to lose weight badly enough to quit.

The first thing to do would probably be to create a food log and write down absolutely everything you eat including all snacks, no matter how small. From that you should be able to see how many calories you are taking in.

Also, go to and follow the instructions to work out your maintenance level of calories. Once you fill in your details you will be given a figure which you multiply by a factor relating to your activity levels. Once you have that number subtract 500 calories and that’s what you need to be eating in a day to lose weight. If after a couple of weeks you still haven’t lost anything then try subtracting a little more

^^ I use for that. I highly recommend. I'm in the same situation here in my office, junk everywhere all the time, brutal! I haven't touched the stuff now in two weeks, you just need to ignore it, you have to want not to have it, then it becomes easy. Also when you go grocery shopping don't go down that snack aisle, if you don't buy it, you're not going to eat it. If you don't do the shopping explain the situation to your wife/gf-they should support you and not buy/eat junky food around you

What they all said!!

Eventually, you will be forced to make a decision as to which you want more, that Big Mac, or the clothes you used to wear. Everyone who has weight troubles eventually has to make that choice. Start out simple. Replace one of your junk food meals/snacks with one healthy meal/snack. Do silly things like take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park at the far end of the parking lot and walk in. Don't grocery shop hungry, and don't even go into the snack sections. It ain't going to be easy. But, if it was easy, everyone would be thin and fit. It's a choice, and it's up to you to make it, and stick with it.

one post wonder maybe?

You can do ANYTHING you want to do if you WANT it bad enough. Obviously your current desire to lose weight isn't strong enough to overpower your desire for eating sh!t all the time.

Figure out how to get good wholesome meals into your body and start exercising during the week. there's no magic weightloss that will help you if you keep eating fast food all the time.

It sounds like your job is stressing you out.

Don't take it to seriously....no one else does, trust me.

Rupert, I'm an executive in a global role for a global IT firm, so sounds like a similar situation to yours. My advice is:

  1. Start bringing healthy food to work to replace the junk food. There is nothing wrong with eating when you're hungry, but this way you'll have the healthy food on hand and won't be so tempted to dive into the junk food. I also like Matt's advice, do not buy any junk food period when you go grocery shopping, and get rid of any junk food you already have in your house or in your office. Make sure you have lots of healthy food to snack on.
  2. I really like batstiva's advice on easy ways to get exercise in by taking the stairs, looking for opportunities to walk more by parking further away, etc... I'll give you my rant on exercise in #3. :)
  3. Find time to exercise! Do both cardio, even if it is only walking, and strength training. You will lose weight, feel better, and exercise is a great stress reliever. You need to prioritize exercise time as time for you doing something for yourself, and balance that with work, family, etc... If you never focus on yourself you will not have a happy life. Schedule time on your calendar each day to take a 20 or 30 min walk. This is a great time as an executive to spend thinking about some difficult issues or business decisions you may be faced with. It's easy to get wrapped into being reactive and never spending the time to think or plan, and of course this will give you some exercise. Make sure you also plan time to do strength training with weights at least 3 times per week, you don't need to spend more than an hour at a time. If you prioritize this and make it happen your company will end up with a healthier, less stressed, more productive executive, and you'll be able to contribute more than you are now, even though you may be spending a bit less time working to accommodate the exercise routine.

I wish you the best in making these kinds of changes, it won't be easy. As others have said, you have to want to make the change and it sounds like you are starting on that path by your post here. What you don't want to happen is to be forced into making these changes as a result of coming down with heart disease, diabetes, or something else. It's much better to do it on your own terms.

Sometimes the easiest way to control diet is to set a reminder. We can send you reminders for healthy food choices and also provide healthy alternatives when you need to eat around the office.

Let me just stop you right in your tracks.

You're saying you can't control your eating habits.
First of all its a damned lie, second, you're just making an excuse for your lack of motivation, and third you're creating and enforcing a limiting belief frame on your self in which you will NOT achieve the goal you desire.

Try this instead:

You not only CAN but you WILL control your diet. It will reward you in such positive ways you probably can't even imagine it right now. Not only in the way of weight loss, but also a radical increase of energy and at least in my experience a massive psychological happy-boost. You sound like a pretty accomplished individual, and fixing a poor diet is no where near as hard as it can seem.

general tips:

Bring your own stuff to work.
Making a little something and throwing it in a tupperware box and bringing it to work is NOT hard. It does NOT take too long. And it IS worth it.

If you get "Junk" cravings, then just pull some self control out of your butt and stick with your diet. After a while all junk food will reveal it self for the crap it is, and it will be about as desirable to consume as fecal matter.

So hop to it. And don't come tell me you can't.:action6:
