I cannot control my eating of junk food

Hello everyone,

I am a working executive, working long hours and addicted to fast food, usually eating while I'm in the office. I seem to eat whether I'm hungry or not and have got to a stage where I am unable to control my eating habit. Unfortunately, my weight is increasing and I'm being forced to buy clothes a size larger than normal. I can devote a little time to exercise, but is there a recommended safe way to lose weight? I've heard of all these diets, such as Atkins, that don't sound very healthy at all.

One thing that's working for me when I want a snack is chewing fruit-flavored gum. It tastes good enough to hold me over and it's an absolutely trivial amount of calories. That, or, if you just have to physically eat something, have a fruit salad or some nuts. Maybe take your own meals to the office or even get half of a sub from and the baked potato chips from Subway. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car farther away; I always run up the stairs now. It's all the little steps you take that add up.

I don't think the Atkins diet is any good, my brother does it. Sure, he's able to sit down with an entire package of pepperoni and eat it and lose a lot of weight, but it all comes back the second you go off of it.

As for a safe way to lose weight, I would recommend eating less and exercising more. You need to do both. If you are not willing to change your diet and be more physically active then you will not lose any weight. You can't continue to do the same thing and expect different results.

Roland,
I would first like to commend your motivation to at least begin the process of making a change, and I would recommend that you start slowly with small steps that you can sustain, instead of dramatically trying to change everything all at once.

You are absolutely correct in your observation that the diet fads such as Atkins, etc are not really healthy long term solutions for weight loss, you need to learn to eat differently and incorporate exercise into your life.

From a dietary perspective, I think that you can make a huge difference by startign to eat a good breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it sounds like your schedule is a little on the hectic side and a small concession of time to eat a good breakfast will go a long way in helping you eat better as the day goes on. Most bad eating habits that I have seen over the years stem from an inadequate first meal- and I have seen so many people improve their overall health and lose weight by doing something as simple as eating a good breakfast.

The next piece is exercise. I am a staunch believer in short but intense workouts, it is what I have done all my life and what I have seen work for hundresd of people. The key is that you can afford 10-20 minutes of your life three times a week- but for most committing themselves to training for an hour or more 5 times a week or more, is far too much, and you don't need that much to make major changes.

I wish you all the best!

Warmest regards,

Kevin Richardson

when i get an aching for a bag of chips instead i eat some quaker mini crisps... theyre like chips and are actually really good... the also have crispy delights which are great when im in need of some sweetness... you wouldnt think it would be all that satisfying looking at the package but by the time im done i dont find myself looking for anything else.... something a little harder then replacing your snacks for better ones is actually figuring out why your "addicted" to food... you can eat all the healthy stuff you want but if your eating too much it's still not going to help you...
try thinking about why you "need" the food... is it a pleasure thing? is there something missing in your life your trying to fill with food? do you have other pleasurable/fullfilling things in your life outside of work? Is the only thing you have to look forward in every day is a reliable bag of chips or a chocolate bar? Once you decide what it is that makes you want to eat then you need to figure out what your going to do about it... what other things do you enjoy doing? is there a way to make time for them? (if not you may want to rethink your long hours working. is this how you want to spend your life?)
I could go on and on... and maybe I'm not even close... but maybe you should think about it...

Hi,
I fully understand your problem - its quite common that people working long hours in offices pick up habits like eating junk food and set aside no time to exercise. Junk food is a serious health risk. My advice would be the following:
• Stop eating junk food, or at least cut it down to eating junk food a maximum of once per week.
• Start some simple, low key exercise such as walking
Use a great product I have tried that actually burns body fat. Highly scientific and armed with worldwide patents it should have a noticeable impact in a short period of time. More details here given below in my signature:

i think they normally would have links in their posts, or maybe they are trying to get posts in the forum so the look legitimate and they will post later ... I can't really blame them for their effort cause I've just hired someone to do the same ;)

I honestly give in at time to cravings. If I am craving a soda I give in every once in a while. Cause if I dont I will binge eat/drink whatever I am craving. Otherwise as far as a diet goes eat more chicken and fish also just watch the calories but dont give up any food group cause you will put the weight back on and I know from a ton of past experience! I have lost 50lbs and able to keep it off for a few months now.

I had that same problem

Hello,, i had that exact same issue as you have. i hope this helps, but how I dealt with it was mentally. i used to not be able to control my eating habits, especially because as a student, I have a lot of time at home during the afternoons, and all the stress with school would just seemed to ease up with all the good food i can find and devour at home.

But then one thing that came to me when I was on the net searching for help was, before you eat anything, ask yourself...... "how will I feel while I'm eating this? [answer] but how will I feel AFTER eating all of this?"

Another thing that helped me was taking a photo of me, looking thin...[you can always take a picture and then stretch it length-wise] and then i posted it up on my mirror so whenever i look at myself in the mirror i am reminded of how i want to look. i know it doesn't sound very nice but it motivated me a lot.

another thing about exercise...find what you like to do and do it constantly. i LOVE to dance. i have a passion for dance. when i found out about Hip Hop Abs workout, i tried it out and i LOVED IT. so maybe you can find something that you like to do that will keep you occupied [away from cravings] and something that will get you moving.

GOLDEN RULES: OBEY AND BELIEVE; BE HAPPY ABOUT YOURSELF

hey man,

Lets cut straight to the chase, I noticed everyone is saying things like believe in yourself and just replace it with healthy food. This is all good but the fact remains, you have a huge addiction to sugar!!!!!

My suggestion to you, is identify the foods that you are eating in excess, then start to slowly cut them out.
For eg....coke cola-instead of drinking it everyday, try and make it so you drink it every second day etc(.. work upto the whole week and so on.

As you develop confidence in your self and diet, start experimenting with different healthier foods. You need to spend more time exercising as well, you will not drop the weight effectively without proper exercise.

one more thing,
How do you see yourself 1 year from today?????????? FIT or FAT???? You must visualize as well.

Life is way to short to be overweight, get amongest it my friend!
All the best on your journey!

P.S. get help from someone who knows a lot about weighloss

This might seem like a really stupid idea, but it works for me...

When you get a craving to eat, but you have a feeling that you're not really hungry, rather, you're just bored, try eating 3 or 4 pepperoncini rings. They have almost no calories and the capsaicin helps to fool your stomach into thinking that you're not hungry anymore.

Like I said, it seems crazy, but it works for me.
