I am right in thinking this way right?

I have this friend who like me needs to loose some lbs and she seems to think it's ok to go out and party and get drunk off of a lot of alcohol and she's also convinced that this will not effect her weight loss. If you are really committed to loosing weight that is something you definitely should not do right b/c of all the calories and what not in alcohol? Thanks.:)

Calories should be viewed as fuel. You get to choose what grade octane fuel you use.

Alcohol is certainly not optimal. Chances are good that adding the calories from a bunch of binge drinking on top of what you eat during the course of the day that weight loss will be tough.

Also, the party lifestyle really isn't conducive to eating properly. Most people I know who party like rockstars eat like crap.

Alcohol

is loaded w/ empty carbs. If she is having mixed drinks the mixers are loaded with sugar too. Alcohol actually acts as a diaretic so it will cause water loss. The fact that it rapidly increases your blood sugar level then drops it causes increased hunger and leads to over eating. Its not a great choice for recreation or calorie control. I hope she leaves the driving to the sober. She may have an issue with alcohol if she drinks to excess when she drinks. Kathy

She doesn't excessively drink but we are in college and there are a lot of parties and what not where drinking takes place on weekends. But since I've been told that alcohol will have a negative effect on my weight loss I've stayed clear of any alcohol, I'm not going to let one night of fun disrupt my long-term goal.

A girl I know was in the lightweight rowing team where you have to be under 60kg. When she started partying and drinking she gained weight, and found she couldn't lose it at all, because she wasn't willing to stop drinking. So now she's not on the team anymore.

But then, of course, you also see these stick-thin girls who get drunk every night.

I guess everyone's different. But drinking certainly doesn't help weight loss. And my opinion is that you can get far more useful calories (i.e. nutritious ones) from proper food.

i dont know about you but i rather eat my calories then drink them..lol yes i enjoy drinking from time to time.. but i can hold off on a year or more. if theres a chance its going to slow my progess then forget it! just do whats best for you.. by the time you hit your goal she'll be wondering what went wrong:)

Well there's a bit of a difference with what exactly one drinks...if you go out and drink beers or hard alcohols mixed with sugary liquids..you're going to gain weight, no doubt about it. BUT alcohol calories themselves have not been found to add weight. Alcohol calories are NOT carbohydrate calories and they don't react the same with the body. Beer, for example has both carb and alcohol calories in it, as does say a Pina Colada. If you're drinking straight alone vodka everynight, extensive studies have found that it does not lead to weight gain. Yes, it's true that you lose some inhibitions and tend to overeat while drinking..but if you can control that part of it...alcohol calories won't lead to weight gain.

I don't think i could stop going out, and the fact that you're out and dancing has to be good, i suppose if she sticks to vodka and diet coke, it's not so bad- i suppose it depends on the person, i find that i lose my appetite the day after drinking, so i lose weight, and not everyone gets hungry when they're drunk, that's another thing i don't do.
