I am no longer overweight!

For any of you who have followed my Weight Loss Diary I set out 101 days ago to make some changes to my eating and the level of my activity.

Starting weight: 231 Lbs
Current weight: 187 Lbs
Target weight: 176 Lbs
Loss to date: 44 Lbs (20 kilos)
Left to lose: 11 Lbs

What the above data doesn't tell you is that my BMI has dropped to 24.13 from a starting BMI of almost 33 which categorised me as Obese.

I wish I could say it has been hard but it hasn't. I have begun to relax some of my food restrictions like I now enjoy a biscuit or 3 with my cup of tea and the odd fish supper.

Habits I think I have picked up which I can keep with me.

1. Not reaching for a sandwich/bread as the first or easy choice.
2. Soya milk instead of cows milk
3. No alcohol Monday to Thursday and I rarely ever drink on a Sunday unless it's a special occasion
4. Lunch is my main meal of the day
5. Always have breakfast even if it's fruit or a bowl of cereal, not toast
6. Do a little exercise every day - I work from home and have a desk-based job so it was not uncommon for me not to leave the house for 2-3 days at a time

I've never been a big fast-food fan, chocolate bar eater and I have always ever had diet soft drinks so no major changes there.

My motivation for change now -

* I am 40 in 7 days
* I have 2 young children (3 years and 6 months)
* We have a history of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure in my family

Good job man, it's a good thing you built good habbit, it's the finality after all, a diet is not only about losing fat & weight, but building good habbit should take a big part.

Congratulations on a brilliant weight loss.

Your health risks at your current BMI are tons better than at the start of your journey - and you are setting a good weight control example to those kids so that not only you but they are more likely to break that family trend and live long healthy lives.

Thank you guys! This forum has helped loads. Homemade burger, chips and maybe half a beer to celebrate the milestone (after a 3 mile run this evening).

Still have another 5 kilos to lose before I reach my target.

Congrats on your progress.

I still classify myself as a newb, so I'm going to ask: is there a huge difference in soy and cow's milk, in your opinion and from your experience?

There is no real reason to change from cow's milk to soy milk unless you are lactose intolerant. Cow's milk provides more protein, more calcium and Vitamin B than soy milk, and actually contains a lower percentage of fat. Overall, cow's milk is actually healthier, and most soy milk is 'fortified', meaning it has stuff added to provide at least a bit of calcium and various vitamins.
Soy milk is linked to lowering cholesterol levels due to it not containing any cholesterol, unlike cow's milk. Unfortified soy milk has about half the calories of cow's milk, but won't provide vital nutrients. Most soy milk in stores is fortified, and actually on the same level as whole milk, and higher in calories than semi skimmed or skimmed milk. Soy milk and soy products in general are linked to increasing the risk of breast cancer in pre-menopausal women, even though research into that is controversial and ongoing.

In other words - cow's milk or soy milk is entirely a matter of personal preference. Consumed in a healthy amount, neither of the two is 'better' as such, or better for weight loss. It's just what the individual likes better.

Completely agree with Benny. Diet is about building good eating and health habits and with these changes or adaptation comes the bonus of weight loss, healthy body and a healthy soul.

Well done and good luck with the rest of your journey, you certainly have the right idea!
You should be very proud, and I am pretty sure your children will be very proud of you :)
