Muscle atrophy occures when there is a disuse in of the muscles over a long period of time. The muscle DOES NOT turn to fat.

The reason why this assumption is created is because usually by the time atrophy sets in, you have most likely gained fat from doing nothing and probably eating like ****. So when your muscle is broken down, your fat will most likely show.

That's right, there is NOTHING that has ever supported the misguided opinion that muscle turns into fat. It's surprising how many people think this, but they're wrong. When you lose muscle mass, it doesn't "turn into" anything. If you don't work out and eat bad foods, you'll lose muscle and gain fat. That doesn't mean that the muscle turned into fat.

Thank you for responding haha, I knew that ur muscles just deteriate and therefore u lose weight. But if you are eating bad you would gain fat thanks guy!

It's not true, but there is a connection.

When you're working out and gaining muscle, you're burning more calories.. and you also have muscle burning more calories. In order to gain muscle, you have to take in a lot of calories, as well as having a high expenditure. When you stop working out, you'll still have the same appetite. So, if you don't continue to work out and keep your muscle, your overall expenditure is going to drop, while your intake is going to remain high if you don't adjust your diet. This leads to getting fat obviously if unchecked, and this does happen often.

The muscle certainly doesn't turn into fat, and it's never a reason not to gain the muscle.. you just have to realize that if you stop, you can't eat the same way you had been or the large difference in intake and expenditure will lead to fat gain.

So, no.. not true at all, but this is why people have this misconception.
