Hurt Calf Muscles

Hey guys.

So I was doing one of my 4hour jogs right, I was just coming up to my street, where I live, and I decided to jump from the road to the footpath, because I like to jump. It's a pretty long jump, but I do it frequently.

How, I pushed off my right leg, and landed on my left, and just as I landed, I got the worst pain imaginable in my calf. I mean seriously, I can't remember when in my life anything hurt this much. It also went really really stiff, as though someone poured a truck full of cement into it. I couldn't move my calf muscles at all.

So after a few minutes of laying perfectly still there, it seemed to get a bit better. I did some stretches, and limped home. It seemed to me quite a bit better, and I thought it might recover quickly.

However, after sitting down for a few hours at the computer, I've just now gotten up to go and get some food, and it hurts a lot when I walk. When I'm standing, if I move the vertical position of my foot, it hurts quite a bit, especially if I move my foot down.

Also, let me make it clear that this is not a rolled or sprained ankle, the pain is not there, where the foot meets and ankle, but right in the calf muscles, somewhere in the middle I'd say, and it hurts quite a bit more than when I roll my ankle. It still feels a bit stiff too.

So does anyone have any theories on what happened? What course of action should I take?

Thanks.

You may have just pulled it or even torn it. Ive strained/ Torn my gastrocnemius a few times but i cant really tell by the information youve given...Could you describe what sort of pain and so on.

When i injured my calf i waited a few days to see how it was going to turn out. I then went to the doctors to find out more and it turn out to be a strain this time and apparently there are different grades of them. So if it is still in pain after a few days you should go to the doctors to find out more....

It sounds like its been torn or strained grastrocnemius though. May be something more serious though but torn muscles still are pretty painful so go to the doctors is my advice if its continues.

I'm afraid I'm not good at describing pain. I wouldn't say it's a sharp pain, just a really stiff type of pain.

Do torn muscles heal well/quickly?

It depends on where you get it...Some muscles recover faster than others in my experience. I had a torn quadricep and i was limping for 3-4 days before i could start to regain proper walking form again...The pain was all gone after around 2 weeks. Im not sure with your gastrocnemius though as mine was a strain...

I just had a look at wikipedia, at the diagram of calf muscles, and I would say it's definately the gastrocnemius. It's not any specific point on it, basically most of the length of the muscle carries this pain.

Just a normal stretch...Example: Try standing straight then try touch your toes that will stretch your calf see if that causes pain..

Hmm well that may just rule out that a strain might be the problem..

Maybe you just landed the wrong way on it. See how it is in the morning, and if its not swelling then it most likely is not a strain.

By the way, 6" means six inches. 6' means six foot. I think that's what you want in your sig.

Or, maybe that is what he wants in his sig...:D As for the muscle, no one here can guess what it is. Go to the infirmary and have one of the doctors or more likely medical students take a look at it.
