How to lose?

Way too vague a question...

How many calories are you currently eating?
What are you doing for exercise?

Spend some time reading the stickied threads around the forum and you will have a lot of good info... and helpful info to get to where you want to be.

Weight loss is not an exact science - theoretically there's no magic - you use more calories than you take in... which means keep track of your calories and cut back and exercise...

Learn how to accurately weigh and measure what you're eating... Guessing on portion sizes usually puts oyu over on calories for the day by several 100...

to cut back it helps to know how many you are currently eating.

Well it really just depends. Some days I will eat aroung 850 calories and other days I will eat around 1200. I will check out the threads you told me about as well. Do you know off the bat about how many more calories I would have to burn than what I eat to lose a pound? Thanks!

you burn calories by breathing, sitting on your butt, sleeping, and working out...

850 -1200 is entirely too low for your size... it gives you absolutely no wiggle room at al - what are you going to do when you're down 20lbs and you're weight isn't budging - you need enough calories to live on --

Do some reading then come back and ask questions based on what you've read...

If you added up a normal days calories (on fitday.com or similar) before you started on your 850-1200 per day plan, how many calories were you ranging per day?

I just did start using a online food diary. I am not sure, but it doesn't seem like I eat a lot, just the things that are bad for me. I am almost afraid to eat more food because I don't want to gain anymore weight and become even more frustrated. My goal is to lose about 2 lbs per week. I will have to burn 1,000 more calories than what I eat to do that. Does anyone know where I can find out about how many calories that I burn, when I am just doing normal thing like, sleeping, sitting, teaching? That way I may have a better idea on what I need to burn in the gym or at home.:leaving:

Did you not read the thread in nutrition? that give a link to the formula you are looking for...

Look for harris benedict formula...

Have you been eating 850-1200 calories for a very long time now? Or exactly how many calories were you getting on an average day before that if you recently started this. This information is helpful in figuring out if you're not losing because you're eating too much or too little. So if you've been eating that low for a while and you're not losing, clearly there would be a problem wiht your metabolism that needs addressing.

Well I never really counted my calories but here is what I would eat most days. Breakfast-turkey sausage or bacon, Special K red berry cereal, Quaker hot cereal, or a fresh bowl of fruit. Lunch is almost always some type of smart ones meal, or soup with sugar free applesauce or pudding on the side, and dinner would be whatever my mom made. That is where most of my calories came in probably. I also work out for at least an hour after work, 5 days a week. My whole family is overweight. Do you think something could be wrong with my metabolism? What can I do about it?

I wouldn't know anything about your metabolism, especially since its impossible to figure out how many calories you normally eat given that for dinner you eat whatever your family makes, and I have no clue what that is, and i dont know the calories in the brands you mentioned but you should be able to figure it out if you have the food still in your house. Just look on the package, its well worth it to know how many calories different food items have. You'd be surprised at how high things can go so a good start to losing weight is getting a sense of how many calories different foods have and what you were getting that was making you put on extra weight.
