i've heard everyday so you can moniter your weight and nip it in the but if it starts going up, and it will also keep you motivated.. but i've also heard that your weight fluctuates daily, and you should weigh yourself on a weekly basis, as to not get discouraged..

what do you think?

I think it's up to you...

What works best for you is the most effective method.

oh yeah and searching for this topic is also extremely helpful as the question has been asked before

Read the thread entitled the Scale mentality

thanks :) ill look it up

Yup.

But generally speaking, once a week or less. Every day is for neurotic people who don't know any better... BECAUSE THEY'RE CRAZY. :sifone:

Seriously. Day-to-day fluctuations will seem random, and don't matter. Trends matter. That is if you are for some reason limited to using scale weight as a metric. Limited because it is by far the least useful. If you can afford it, have your body fat tested every month or two (this will run you roughly $30 to have it done by someone who knows what they're doing..see if you can check the local uni for skinfold testing, or have your doc do or refer you to someone who can do DEXA).

Try Tracking Inches...

The scale will make you nuts. Get a tape measure and measure your waistline. If your waistline is getting smaller you are on the right track. Your body will not always show a drop in weight depending on many variables. The tape measure is constant. Bottom line, you do not want a belly that hangs over your pants.

I weight myself every morning for no reason, other than I am just excited to see my weight go down. If it goes up by a pound or so, I don't get discouraged because I know it's just a fluctuation. So basically, for me, it does nothing but give me encouragement.

Thanks for your post. This is a hot topic right now in the weight control world. Maleficent is right -- you'll need to do what is best for you. Some people can weigh themselves daily. Others weigh twice a week or weekly. There are some people who don't weigh; they go by other body measurements or how clothes fit.

Research shows that weighing once a week or more helps with weight loss. Most recent findings show daily weighing to be the most effective at losing weight and keeping it off. The theory is you can adjust your food intake and activity accordingly, as you stated. I agree with previous posts in realizing that body weight normally fluctuates and to look at trends instead of worrying about gaining 1-pound.

I weigh every day, and I'm not crazy. It's what works for me. Some people can't handle seeing the day to day fluctuations, but I *need* to weigh every day to keep on plan.

Doesn't really matter, as I agree that whatever works works.

But, look at what you just said. You *need* the daily reassurance of what for all intents and purposes may as well be a random number? How is this different from say, an autistic person who freaks out if something is moved from where it should be or the stereotypical OCD case who has to wash his hands 14 times after using a public washroom to feel okay about it? :D

Needing to is what makes you crazy. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being crazy necessarily, so long as it's not maladaptive, just saying a simple assertion of your sanity is not a rational defense. ;)

I said I was "crazy" for doing it, but I do not genuinely believe that I'm crazy.

You seem to think weighing yourself daily is crazy. *I* think weighing yourself only once a week is crazy. What I do works for me, so why mess with success?

weight yourself daily is crazy and I was crazy. weight yourself monthly is better.

Better for you, you mean. I'm not going to criticize what you're doing if it works for you, but weighing myself monthly would not work for me. Period.

If it works for me, explain how it could possibly be wrong.

Did you read my post before replying? The first thing I did was agree with what you are still trying to assert. If it's not maladaptive, it's not really a problem. But it's still crazy by standard definitions.

Nobody said wrong. Not me, anyway. Only crazy. The fallacious reasoning you are engaging in right now is what in logic is called an "Appeal to the Consequences of a Belief." In short, whether or not a thing bodes well has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not is is true.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

No, we won't. You are wrong. Objectively speaking.

You just think it's a matter of opinion, which it's not. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. But...

If you say to me that it is your opinion that "air" is composed primarily of neon, and I say, "No, you are wrong. It's nitrogen," this is not a difference of opinion. This is you being wrong, objectively speaking.

Whether or not objective assessment is possible is a whole other tangent, but I posit that it is within specific constructs. And when I refer to objective wrongness or objective rightness, I'm assuming we've agreed that that construct is the reality common to the perception of rational human beings.

It's not a matter of pride or anything. As I said, whatever works for each person is what's best. I'm only defending my position that you inappropriately criticized, and have thus far failed absolutely in arguing against. :)

You don't have to agree to disagree, but I will not discuss the topic any further with you. Sorry.

We haven't discussed it at all. You are confused about the difference between dialectic and being corrected. ;)

Don't be sorry. <3
