how much weight gain is normal in one week?

been trying to bulk up and eat a lot of protein rich foods, and I am gaining strength as well as weight. in about 2 weeks i have increased all my lifting by roughly 10-20%. My weight has gone from 170 to 176. I have also noticed a little more fat around my mid section as well. Is this all normal? Should I really be avoiding simple carbs & only concentrate on veggies & protein or does this progress look normal? Thanks!

Gaining 6 pounds in 2 weeks as a beginner sounds very possible, but if you are already seeing your midsection gaining fat, you should cut back on your calorie intake some. In having a healthy lifestyle, all sources of nutrients are necessary. There is a time for all kinds, protein, complex carbs, simple carbs, fiberous veggies, and even saturated/unsaturated fats. The trick is to learn when it's best to eat what. before and after your workout, you want a good amount of proteins and complex carbs. Directly after your workout (within like 20 minutes) you want proteins and simple carbs (to boost your glycogen levels back up to normal). Consistantly eating veggies and fruits throughout the day is just healthy in general.

Now, granted, that's not even close to covering everything related to what you are talking about, but those are just a couple of general rules that you need to learn. The average amount of weight gain (during SERIOUS bulking cycles) is still only 1-2 pounds a week. After that, it's mostly fat and water retention.

OK I will cut back on simple carbs before & way after workout, will eat large meal right after workout. I really need to purchase whey powder. Anyways, thanks for the info!

hold on there...I don't want you to misunderstand what I said. I will just give you an example of my pre-workout, post workout (within 20 minutes after lifting), and my post-post workout (an hour or so after my post workout). Remember though, I'm a lot bigger than you so your portions will be smaller than mine

pre-workout (bout 45 minutes before workout)
1/2 - 3/4 cup oatmeal (pre-cooked)
1 protein shake (40g protein)
sometimes a caffine drink...if it's going to be an intense workout

post-workout (20 minutes after workout)
1 protein shake with dextrose (40g protein and 40-60g carbs)

post-post-workout
12-14oz grilled chicken
1 cup of greens or whatever
3/4 - 1 cup brown rice or whole wheat pasta

Have you been tracking your calories? The most important thing is the amount of calories you are ingesting in accordance with your goals and a very close partnering second is the nutrient ratios. You want proper amounts of Proteins, Carbs, and good fats, in your diet. Carbs are not evil----but the mighty calorie......can be........if you let it.

How long has it taken to gain 6 pounds? If you are bulking, yes, gaining some fat in the torso area and lower back is normal in males.

What is your training like?

training is very hard, i do a full body workout 3 times a week, the last set of every workout is a dropset.
