How much time will it take to lose 50 lbs?

Assuming I do everything right, diet and exercise for an hour minimum, 5-6 days a week?

I'm curious as to everyone's opinions. I hoping its possible to lose 2-3 lbs a week... that would be ideal for me and 50 pounds gone in anywhere from 4 months to 5 and 3/4 months (17-25 weeks)

Honestly I don't think 3 pounds a week is realistic, but I'm hoping for 2 lbs a week. How realistic do you think that is? And for anyone who has lost 40- 50 lbs, how long did it take you?

1 percent of your body weight a week is a realistic goal -but - as has been said here too many times to count - every body is different... and rushing to get to a goal is never in your long term best interest...

2 lbs a week is realistic on a good sound life-style change program. Basically that's a 1000 calorie a day deficit. So you determine your calorie maintenance levels ( this is how many calories your body uses with no extra activity)--many good forum threads here on determining that so I won't go into that here. You add in the extra activity and exercise calories. Then you subtract 1000 to determine that target Calorie per day level.

I recommend reading Steve's thread on the basic concepts in this forum. Actually, I would search and read many of his very helpful posts on workouts etc. That is a good place to start.

I have tried many plans in the past and the ones where I lost more than that just are not very healthy in the long run.

Assuming you do everything right..then 2lbs a week is achievable..however this is not a perfect world...and rarely do things always go 'right' so you might perhaps look at a more 'long term' approach and aim for 50lbs over 12 mnths..ie a 1lb a week average which will take into account...the inevitable 'plateau' the unforseen 'slip up' and the 'tough bit' when getting close to target. It takes the pressure off if you think long term...also forms a good basis for long term maintenance of the achieved goal.

40 pounds of loss by the scale: 23 weeks, 5 days.
50 pounds of loss by the scale: 28 weeks, 5 days.

I'm currently at 38 weeks, 6 days and down about 66 pounds.

I agree with mal's statement that everyone's body is different. I've always been an easy loser (although in the past, I've quit losing before this point semi-intentionally), and a lousy maintainer. So this is the "easy" part for me.

IMHO, the hardest thing for most people who are trying to "do everything right" is accepting the fact that you have little or no short-term control over the scale. You will have weeks where you "do everything right" and the scale is higher at the end than it was at the beginning. That's just the way the scale is. If you have a plan that creates a deficit, and you stick to the plan, you will lose weight, and in the long run, the scale will reflect that.
