How much should I lose?

Hey, so I made some good progress over the last year, but then got sick (not seriously) enough to derail my food and exercise regimen through december. I haven't gained weight, per se, but feel flabbier. Obviously I'd rather gauge my fitness by how fast I can run a 5K, or whatever, but if anybody has any experience with this, I'd appreciate advice on a good weight loss goal, pound-wise.

Hello- Well that all really depends on you and your size, and most importantly, HOW YOU FEEL. I have an initial goal weight loss of 15 pounds and long term of 30 lbs. However, who knows what I'll look like and feel like at 20 lbs loss?
 
That's a like really bad position to use for a weight loss thing... :p but like, yeah. You're really close to being good to go. You don't have to lose much at all.
 
How much did you lose before? It looks almost like you got a little bit of some loose skin though...(or maybe its just in my head)
 
AThen, my best advice would be to consult a physician or RD.. You may very well possibly have extra muscle mass from excerise. Be careful with BMI.

I had to stop exercising for a couple weeks, then got busy with grad school and I've felt like I gained back a disproportionate amount of weight. I'm sure it's largely psychological, but does anybody else feel that way? What 'mind tricks' do you tell yourself to get confident again and back on track, exercise and food-wise again? I tend to just criticize myself and call myself a fat piece of shite, but that, um... doesn't really help my motivation.
 
AHey bud, don't worry, I've the same problem. I can really relate! I catch the thoughts, question them and find the positive , true things about them.

Thanks! I know everybody's different, but sometimes (without getting TOO down on myself) admitting that I'm not as fit as I was a month ago, and feeling a little bad about it is a good motivator. If I don't call it a problem, it's difficult to find the motivation to put aside, say, writing 15 pages of a screenplay, or working on an essay for a grant application, to go for a grueling workout. Once I admit that this is as important to me as my art, it lets me set aside time again without feeling I am behind.
 
Here are some new pictures. I got sick, then we had a heat wave which cramped my running style, but the flip side of the heat is I eat healthier for some reason when it's really hot. I can't stand too much bread or pasta, and stick to cold water and veggies more. So I don't think I've put on much fat, maybe a couple pounds. But in the mean time I'm putting myself on a calisthenics regimen so when I get back to running this week, I already am in the habit of working my muscles, too. I will probably start running this week, then I'm getting married on Sunday! Hopefully will find some time to run on the honeymoon, but really when I get back afterwards I will hit the pavement again.

For now, here is my routine:


15-20 pushups

30-40 seconds of holding a side-plank with legs on the floor (working my way back up to legs elevated)

chair-squats for 20 seconds

pistol squats for 10-15 seconds

not sure what it's called exactly but when you are in a push-up/plank position, lift one leg and the opposite arm up as high as you can. The balance you have to keep really helps your core!


I don't have super elucidated goals, but roughly: get a six pack, and run a 5K in less than 27 minutes!
