How much is too much?

So,

I´m 17 years old and very athletic.

The thing is I work out like 6 times a week, so I take about one day a week off for my muscles to recover.
Plus I do pretty much the same routine every day: Bench press, dumb-bells, exercise for shoulders and back and abs.

Recently a friend told me that was completely wrong, because my muscles wouldn't have enough time to recover. So he thinks I don't gain as much muscle as if I took more days off or didn't repeat everything every day.

Now I don't really belief that, cause it seems to be working very fine for me and the friend I was talking about is nowhere as muscular as I am.
What do you think????

I really appreciate your answers!

i agree with ur friend 100 %, i think ud be better off with a normal 3 day split routine, or try what i like to do, 2 days on , 1 day off,

ur muscles never get to recover if u work them every day

try something like this

mon , chest/ triceps

wed, biceps /back

fri , legs/ shoulders

and perhaps cardio on the off days , depending on ur goals

yep, agreed^^. do cardio every 3rd day or so. maybe swimming or a bike ride, as it doesnt impact your muscles like running does, although running is a good alternative.

Your muscles take at least 48 hours to recover so if you are going to do certain lifts every time you hit the gym then maybe look into a full body workout 3 days a week. There are various splits you could try as well, search around the forum (especially the stickies) and find one that you think you'll enjoy as that's probably the most important factor to any routine.

You absolutely must have days off to recover. This does not mean that you can't workout everyday. Doing different exercises is in essence a form of rest for previously taxed muscles. So, lets say you worked your back on Monday. You do chest Tues....Legs Weds....you have just had two days off for your back..(just an example). This is a very common routine for athletes who need that consistent input. Now, if you are bulking or bodybuilding you should try and get as much rest for your muscles as possible...you need a bit more down time for that. But, if you are maintaining or trying to gain a little strength then there is no problem with that split. Some top Russians athletes and olympic lifters train heavy with the same exercises every day with great success. The key to that is to limit your reps and sets to <5R for 2-3S. You will probably want to take the weekend of in any case to let your central nervous system recover.
