How much can a person lose?

Hi all,
I want to lose weight the healthy way, you know a proper diet and exercise. I want to know how much weight can a person ideally lose in about a week and in a month? As in, how much weight can they lose, how much shouldn't they lose?

Ideally, a 1% weight loss per week is acceptable. Or two pounds a week as a standard. Seems a bit slow but if you think about it, that's around 104 a year...

There's really no weight you "shouldnt" lose because it all depends on your weight, health etc. For example, a heavy hitter like me wouldn't hurt to lose 4 pounds in a week. As for how much someone CAN lose? See Jericho's topic about the Biggest Loser >_<

Hi Newbie16,

I would check with a doctor if you have any health issues or serious concerns. They can relate to you specifically if you have some past health problems, etc. Now, that being said... most of us say screw it, and just start losing the weight haha...

I read the South Beach Diet, and started doing that back in August of last year... I lost 4-5lbs/ week for 3.5 weeks. Then it slowed down, and I lost 2-3, and now I am losing about 1 pound/ week at the current rate that I am at. So as of today, about 50 pounds in exactly 5 months, for an average of 2.5 pounds/ week. I have never been fatigued, I have never been sick from the weight loss, etc. I think the weight naturally comes off a little quicker in the start, then you hit the dreaded plateau after an undetermined amount of time!

No matter what, stay committed!! and keep it going

Best of luck,

Hi Over the Course of my Weight Loss, I have lost anything from 2lb a week, Up to 9lb a week, But Only the odd weeks here or there, I don't think I could sustain something like that EVERY week, But my Motto Was ANY loss is a loss ! Good Luck !

I feel like I'm not overdoing it when I see between 1.5 and 3 pounds worth of a loss during the week.
I've had a couple weeks where I've lost about 6 pounds (and it wasn't one of the first few weeks of my diet, where it makes sense to lose a great deal at once), and that frightens me a bit... I tend to slow'er down when that happens, because losing too much at once is a shock to the system.

Hi,

saw you in indian forum.

Felt like answering your question.

The rule i follow is, if you loose it fast, you gain it fast. Heard it. Seen it. Felt it. Victimized by it.

However it should not be too slow to get it back in cheat day alone.

Somewhere i read, anything more than 1 KG loss per week is either water or lean muscle (there are exception to this rule such as when you start weightloss or switching only cardio to cardio+weight etc). Loosing muscle is not good since it slows down the resting metabolism.

Here is what i am doing. I am planning a 3 KG weight loss per month. That is little less than 1 KG per week.

again good luck for weight loss.

Losing weight is a long term proposition. If you look at the calories a typical person burns, a 200lb man could really only lose six pounds a week if he ate nothing (4.32 pounds for an 180 pound woman). So, don't get carried away with some of these diet claims!

I lost 40 pounds in nine months getting ready for my college reunion. That was a pretty comfortable rate (a little over 1 pound per week) which allowed for the times when my motivation suffered and I had bad days.

The medical suggestion is 1% of your body weight a week. It varies but as Tom said, keep your head and be reasonable.

It really depends on your weight. I really would not go beyond 2 pounds per week, even if you carry a lot of weight. The goal is not just losing it but keeping it of. That just will not work with a crash diet

You may lose a lot in your first month, maybe around 7 to 9 kg but thats mostly will be water!! The month after the wight loss will reduce maybe to 5 to 4kg but that is the healthy way :) The main factor is your meto lets say you are 90 kg multiply that with 24 it will be 2160cal your body burn each day.Now remember you can raise that by workout or any activity you would love. Good luck with loosing wight :D
