how many times a week?

Okay, I joined the gym. I have a friend who has been weight lifting and all that jazz for a while. Now, I wanted to go 5 days a week, and maybe sundays. He told me that I should work out one day, and than the next day to rest and not work out.

However, he is already doing bigger things, and I dont really want to become huge, just be in shape. Nice arms, and nice tummy, six pack, but not too over done. ya know?

So I want to go monday through friday for about an hour or two each day. I usually warm up, and than go to abs, and do some ground stuff, and than do some arms stuff, and than go to the cardio room, and run, and bike.

For someone who hasnt been training, and all they want is to be in shape. Is this wise? I want to get in shape fairly quickly so I dont want to waste time.

Could I get away with going everyday? (5 days out of the week)

Thanks!

well, 5 times a week to the gym is meant for individuals who do split routines

your friend is correct about resting but you got to know one more thing. you need to begin a **full body** workout plan, because thats the only way you will be able to burn fat throughout your whole body with cardiovascular workouts of course.

yes 1-2 hours is sufficient, if your in the gym for more than 2+ hours, u probably dont know what your doing lol. or w/e it may be. most ppl stay in the gym least 2 - 3 hours.

in addition, i'd like to tell you that with every 1 lb of lean muscle mass, it will burn 50 calories. so it all adds up. and theres no such thing as spot reducing, you wont lose fat in ur arms if you do bicep curls/ triceps every day. u need to workout your whole body as I said before.

and gettin in shape isn't something you can do in a :cinch: its a lifelong journey bro. so what are your goals? u want 6 pack? btw how much do u weigh and your height as well as your body fat %

Hey man, it's nice that you've decided to start getting fit.

So let's get to the point. Working out everyday isn't wise. You'll be overtraining, which inhibits your muscle growth. Aim for 3-4 days a week, working each body part once every 6-7 days or so. This gives your body a chance to recover. Here's a basic split routine for you to look at to get a general idea . Or you can engage in a full body workout, doesn't matter. Also, don't just train your abs and arms, work your entire body. Do cardio 2-4 times a week. Eat healthy. I take it you're looking to bulk? Depending on your info, you need to eat more calories (around 3000 or more on average) to gain muscle or less calories to cut (1500-2000) but, again, it depends on your size. Also, have a good ratio like 35% protein, 35% carbs, and 30% good fats or something in that ballpark. We need more info to be able to help you out.

Good luck in getting more info!
