How Many Calories in one Gym.

Hi Guys,

I realize that you can't really know how many calories you burn at the gym if you do weights also; which I am. But ideally, on cardio machines how much should I really be shooting for? Today I did 315 on the Nautalis ski machine thing, you know you step run like a cycle and you push and pull poles in sync with your arms.

BTW: Is that thing any good? I got a good sweat out of it.

Thanks.

I have absolutely no faith in those machines. You really don't need to base your workouts on the numbers they spit out. Did you challenge yourself?

a good sweat doesn't equal a good workout...

In my non expert opinion what you really want to shoot for is getting your heart rate up... you don't need a fancy heart rate monitor either -if you google Rate of Perceived Exertion - or search it here - you'll get info in the "talk test" and basically it describes what level you should be working at - and you know you're at that level because you eitehr can or can't have a conversation..

I believe the most efficient fat burning workout - is aroudn level 6 where you can't easily have a conversation.. but it's not impossible either.. you don't want to be gasping for air... but you don't want to be whistling dixie either...

Thanks for the responses. I challenged myself, I went for 25 minutes straight......It said my heart rate on the machine was 170 on avg. It was beating pretty good, but I think I might of been able to of had a conversation, not a super easy one, but one none the less.

I would squat on it so my core was not moving just my legs and do that for a bit, man that really hurts! I mean burns you know.

But in any case, how many calories should I be shooting for on avg. if everything was accurate and all. I just want to find a lose number I can shoot for. I never know if I am doing any damage or not.

I check out the google thing. Thanks.

there's no specific calorie range to shoot for.... what's on the machine -might or might not be right... IF you insist on tracking calories - then use a site like and keep track there - that will at least be a bit more accurate than a machine because it takes your weight and gender into consideration.

Shoot for time instead - and do intervals if you can - where you're not going full out for 30 minutes -but instead up your intensity for 2 minutes then go back and rest for one minute -and repeat...
